Korea In November 2026: Weather, Events And What To Pack

November is a very good month for Korea if you like cool, clear days and fewer crowds than October. Seoul averages 11.9°C by day and 3.5°C at night, the last autumn colour hangs on into the first week, and the calendar is packed: Busan’s fireworks on Sat 7 Nov, the Melon Music Awards on 14 and 15 Nov, and the first Christmas lights. Pack layers, not a snowsuit.

Sunbae Says: Do your leaf peeping in the first week of November, then switch to food, spas and lights. By the last week the trees are bare and the wind has teeth.

November Weather In Korea: The Real Numbers

You step out of Incheon on 3 Nov and a light jacket is plenty. On the 25th, that same jacket feels like paper once the sun drops. That is November.

These are the Korea Meteorological Administration’s 1991 to 2020 averages, the honest baseline. Any single year can swing warmer or colder.

City Avg High Avg Low Rain Snow Days
    Seoul 11.9°C 3.5°C 51 mm 2.3
    Busan 16.6°C 8.3°C 50 mm 0.1
    Jeju City 16.4°C 10.4°C 70 mm n/a

Late November is a different animal: nights drop close to freezing, and the Han River wind bites harder than the thermometer suggests. Seoul gets only about 6 rainy days in the month.

Want the mild version? Go south. Busan and Jeju run roughly 5°C warmer than Seoul by day, and my Jeju In November guide covers the island properly.

Early Or Late November? Pick Your Week

Option Best For Cost Time My Take
1 to 8 Nov Last foliage, fireworks, mild days Highest (Busan hotels spike for 7 Nov) 7 to 10 days My pick. Colour, events and comfort in one week.
9 to 18 Nov K-pop fans, city breaks, quieter palaces Mid 5 to 7 days Great if the MMA is your reason to fly.
19 Nov (Suneung) Nobody, if you are flying Same 1 day Avoid flying this day. Fine for sightseeing after lunch.
20 to 30 Nov Budget, spas, early Christmas lights Lowest Any Cold, bare trees, but cheaper and calmer. Pack properly.

I’d book 1 to 8 Nov without hesitation. Stuck with late dates? Lean into hot water, street food and lights.

Autumn Foliage: Catch The Tail End

The Korea Forest Service released its 2026 forecast on 22 Sep, and the Kyunghyang Shinmun report on the forecast map (in Korean) puts the national ginkgo peak around 30 Oct and maple around 31 Oct. Seoul’s palaces and boulevards should still be golden in the first days of November. These are forecasts, not promises.

The season is running on time. Seoraksan showed its first colour on 28 Sep, exactly the long term average and four days earlier than 2025, according to the KMA as reported by Newsis (in Korean).

Option Best For Cost Time My Take
Seoul palaces and ginkgo streets First timers, families Low Half a day Easiest win in week one.
Naejangsan (forecast peak about 4 Nov) Maple lovers, photographers KTX plus local bus Long day trip The best red in Korea, on a weekday only.
Hallasan, Jeju (about 6 Nov) Hikers, Olle walkers Flight to Jeju 2 days or more Pair it with the Olle festival.

Worth It: a weekday at Naejangsan in the first week of November; the 4th is a Wednesday. Skip It: Seoraksan in November, whose peak is forecast for 20 Oct. If you land in October instead, my Seoraksan day trip guide has you covered. Every Seoul spot I trust is in Seoul Fall Foliage 2026.

    Big November 2026 Events

These are the ones worth planning around. Everything else lives on the Seoul Sunbae events calendar.

JTBC Seoul Marathon, Sun 1 Nov. The full course starts at Sangam World Cup Park at 7:30am and finishes at Olympic Park. Entries are closed, but roads close along the route that morning, so take the subway, not a taxi.

Busan Fireworks Festival, Sat 7 Nov. Korea’s biggest fireworks show over Gwangan Bridge, the 21st edition, with viewing zones at Gwangalli Beach, Igidae and Dongbaekseom. The beach is free. Paid seats are 100,000 won (R, table and chairs) or 70,000 won (S, chair only), on sale through NOL Ticket until 5pm on 6 Nov, per the official ticket page (in Korean). In 2024 the main show ran from 7pm for about an hour; the 2026 timetable is not posted yet. My full survival plan is in Busan Fireworks Festival 2026.

Heads Up: the early bird seats sold out within a minute on 26 Aug, and resale tickets on social media are a known scam route. Buy only through NOL Ticket or Busan Bank, and if you are going free, be on the sand by mid afternoon.

[AFFILIATE: Agoda hotels near Gwangalli Beach for the fireworks]

Jeju Olle Walking Festival, 5 to 7 Nov. Three days of group walks on Olle Routes 19 and 20 with haenyeo dance and village food markets. The Visit Jeju festival page lists 30,000 won entry and advance registration closing 9 Oct, so if you read this on launch day, you have one day.

Melon Music Awards, Sat 14 and Sun 15 Nov. The first two day edition, at Gocheok Sky Dome. As of 2 Oct, ticket dates and prices had still not been announced, and acts announced so far include ATEEZ, ILLIT, RIIZE and PLAVE. Watch Melon Ticket, and see K-pop In Seoul This Winter for the rest of the season.

Halloween runs long. Lotte World’s autumn horror festival runs to 15 Nov with a nightly 8:20pm parade, reports New Daily (in Korean), and Everland’s zombie zone Blood City Zero runs to 22 Nov, 4pm to 9pm daily, per Aju News (in Korean). My Halloween In Seoul guide compares both.

Seoul Autumn Festa links performances and festivals across the city until 29 Nov, says the Seoul city government.

Christmas lights start. The Shinsegae facade in Myeongdong was unveiled on 9 Nov in 2023 and around 7 Nov in 2025. The 2026 date is not announced yet, so treat “early to mid November” as the working guess.

The Exam Day Nobody Warns You About

Thursday 19 Nov is Suneung, the national university entrance exam, confirmed in the government’s official exam notice (in Korean). It matters to you.

During the English listening section, every takeoff and landing in the country stops. In 2025 that window was 1:05pm to 1:40pm and about 140 flights were rescheduled, reported the Kyunghyang Shinmun (in Korean). Banks and many offices also open an hour late so students get clear roads.

Heads Up: the 2026 flight freeze times are usually confirmed about a week before the exam. If you fly on 19 Nov, expect a retimed departure, and leave early for the airport because morning roads near schools are restricted.

    What Locals Know

“Peak” means two different things. The Forest Service calls a mountain at peak when 50% of leaves have turned. The KMA waits for about 80%. That is why Korean sites disagree by days. For a first timer, the Forest Service date is your “go now” date; the KMA date is the last good weekend.

Locals book Busan the minute sales open. Busan residents get 10% off paid seats this year, and the hotel packages close on 25 Oct. If you have not booked a Gwangalli hotel by now, stay in Seomyeon or Haeundae and ride in.

Your tourist pass starts the day you charge it. The Seoul short term passes cannot be loaded in advance; the clock starts on the charging day. So charge it on the morning you start riding, not the night you land.

The stadium knows the crush. Gocheok’s operator, the Seoul Facilities Corporation, suggests Guro or Gaebong stations to dodge the Guil Station jam. After the MMA, that 15 to 20 minute walk will beat a 40 minute platform queue.

    Getting There

    1. Busan for the fireworks: KTX from Seoul Station or Suseo Station, about 2.5 hours, standard fare 54,400 won, booked in the Korail+ app. Then Busan Metro Line 2 to Gwangan Station and walk about 10 minutes to the beach. Check Naver Map for the exit on the night, since police manage exits during the show.
    2. Naejangsan: KTX from Yongsan to Jeongeup, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours, then local bus 171 to the park entrance in about 30 minutes. Confirm the bus on Naver Map; autumn weekends add queues.
    3. Gocheok Sky Dome: Line 1 to Guil Station, Exit 2, a 3 minute walk.
    4. Shinsegae facade: Line 4 to Hoehyeon Station, Exit 7, which leads straight to the store.
    5. Lotte World: Line 2 (green) or 8 to Jamsil Station, Exit 4.

[SUNBAE FIELD TEST: time the walk from Guil Station Exit 2 and from Guro Station to the Gocheok gates on an event night]

    Pick Your Version

If It’s Your First Time: I’d book 1 to 8 Nov. Three days of golden trees in Seoul, then KTX to Busan for the fireworks.

If You’re Bringing Kids: I’d do Seoul first while the Lotte World and Everland Halloween seasons are still on, then base yourself in Busan where afternoons stay near 17°C.

If You’re Travelling Solo: Weekdays everywhere: Naejangsan on Wednesday 4 Nov, palaces on a Thursday morning, and the fireworks only if you can stand in a crowd for hours.

If You’re Here For A Reset: Seoul Wellness Travel Week starts 29 Oct, so I’d arrive at the very end of October, then finish with a jjimjilbang on a cold night. My Seoul Wellness Travel Week guide has the programme.

    Sunbae’s Picks

My pick for the best week: 1 to 8 Nov. After 24 autumns here, I’d take it over the shoulder to shoulder peak of mid October every time.

If I only had one November evening in Seoul, I’d walk a ginkgo street at dusk, then warm up with fish cake broth from a street cart. Cheap, warm, very local.

My pick for late November: stop chasing leaves. Markets, lights and spas, and you will enjoy the cold instead of fighting it.

[SUNBAE STORY: a late November night in Seoul when the first cold snap hit, and what warmed you up]

    Offers Worth Knowing

The Busan fireworks are free from the beach, and many Seoul Autumn Festa events cost nothing. In Seoul the short tourist transit passes survive: the city lists 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 day passes (in Korean) at 5,000 to 20,000 won, plus 3,000 won for the physical card, sold from machines at Line 1 to 8 stations. See Which Transit Card You Need. And the KTX to Busan just got cheaper (below).

    What’s Changing In 2026

Busan got cheaper by train. After KTX and SRT merged on 1 Sep 2026, the standard Seoul to Busan fare fell from 59,800 to 54,400 won (in Korean), and you now book both Seoul Station and Suseo Station departures in one app. My read: fireworks weekend trains will go fast, so book the moment your dates are fixed.

The rest of Korea is catching up with Seoul. Foreign arrivals through regional airports rose 42.5% in the first half of 2026, against 18.2% at Incheon and Gimpo, reports Korea JoongAng Daily. Fly straight into Busan or Jeju and skip the Seoul transfer.

    What To Pack For November

Think three layers you can peel off in a warm café and put back on at a bus stop.

    • A light down jacket or padded coat (essential after mid November)
    • A hoodie or knit sweater for the middle layer
    • A thermal base layer for late November
    • Walking shoes for 20,000 steps
    • A scarf and light gloves

Indoor heating is strong, so one thick layer means you cook on the subway. Hand warmers and gloves are at every convenience store. My full list is in What To Wear In Korea From October To December.

    Before You Fly

Two admin jobs. If you are a visa exempt visitor without a K-ETA, file the free e-Arrival Card within 3 days before you land; my e-Arrival Card guide walks you through it. If you hold a passport from one of the 22 K-ETA exempt countries, that exemption runs to 31 Dec 2026, and as of 4 Oct nothing has been announced for 2027. Load Naver Map and a translation app before you go; my Korea travel apps guide lists the ones I actually use.

Heads Up: lookalike sites charge fees for the free e-Arrival Card and for K-ETA. Only use k-eta.go.kr and e-arrivalcard.go.kr.

    Word Of The Stop

단풍 (danpung): autumn foliage. Say “danpung gugyeong” (단풍 구경) and you are talking about leaf peeping, the national autumn hobby. Every hiker in full gear on the subway in early November is doing it.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is November A Good Time To Visit Korea?

Yes. Early November has foliage, days around 12°C, the Busan fireworks and the Melon Music Awards. Late month is shorter and colder.

Does It Snow In Seoul In November?

Rarely. Seoul averages 2.3 snowy days in November, mostly flurries that do not settle.

Where Is Warmest In Korea In November?

Busan and Jeju. Both average highs above 16°C, about 5°C warmer than Seoul.

When Is The Autumn Foliage Peak In November 2026?

The Korea Forest Service forecasts Naejangsan around 4 Nov and Hallasan around 6 Nov. Seoul’s ginkgo and maple are forecast for around 30 and 31 Oct, so early November is your last good window in the capital.

Are Melon Music Awards 2026 Tickets On Sale?

Not as of 2 Oct 2026. The dates (14 and 15 Nov) and venue (Gocheok Sky Dome) are confirmed; ticketing is expected through Melon Ticket once announced.

    How I Checked This

On 4 Oct 2026 I rechecked every date, price and station against the official, tourism board and Korean news sources linked above, plus local blogs and expat coverage. Still unconfirmed: Melon Music Awards ticketing, the Shinsegae facade start date, the 2026 Suneung flight freeze times, the fireworks timetable and any 2027 K-ETA decision. Foliage dates are forecasts and can shift.

Korea In December 2026: Lanterns, Christmas Markets And Snow

December in Korea is cold, dry and bright. Seoul averages 4.2°C by day and minus 3.4°C at night, with about six snowy days in the month. In return you get the Seoul Winter Festival, planned from 4 Dec, a Christmas market at Gwanghwamun, lanterns on Cheonggyecheon, a 1,000 won ice rink, the first ski runs and a Christmas that feels more like Valentine’s Day. Dress for minus five.

Sunbae Says: Base yourself near City Hall or Gwanghwamun in December. The market, the lanterns, the ice rink and the Bosingak bell are all a short walk apart, so you never stand on a freezing bus platform.

December Weather In Korea: What To Expect

Picture it: 6pm, already dark, minus two, and the wind coming straight down Sejong-daero. Five minutes later you are in a market tent holding something hot.

These are 1991 to 2020 averages from the Korea Meteorological Administration.

City Avg High Avg Low Rain Or Snow Snow Days
    Seoul 4.2°C minus 3.4°C 23 mm 6.4
    Busan 10.4°C 2.0°C 34 mm 0.9
    Jeju City 11.0°C 5.6°C 56 mm n/a

Seoul gets only about 23 mm of precipitation in December. That means lots of blue sky, but also dry air: bring lip balm and hand cream. Snow is possible, but it is usually light and melts off the main roads fast. If you want a white Christmas you can count on, you want the mountains of Gangwon, not the capital.

Busan and Jeju stay above freezing on average, which makes them the soft option with small kids. Landing in late November instead? Start with Korea In November 2026.

Early, Mid Or Late December? Pick Your Week

Option Best For Cost Time My Take
1 to 10 Dec Cheaper flights, first lights, quiet palaces Lowest 5 to 7 days Festival may be half built. Fine for food and palaces.
11 to 23 Dec Market, lanterns and rink all running Mid 5 to 8 days My pick. Everything is on and Christmas week prices have not hit yet.
24 to 27 Dec Couples, Christmas Eve dinners Highest Long weekend Book restaurants weeks ahead or eat at 5pm.
28 to 31 Dec Countdown, Bosingak bell High 4 days plus Exciting, but crowds and road closures on the 31st.

If you can choose, fly in around 14 Dec. In past seasons the Gwanghwamun Market and the lanterns both opened in the second week of December, so you get the full set without the Christmas weekend squeeze.

The Seoul Winter Festival: Planned For 4 Dec 2026 To 31 Jan 2027

This is the big one. As of 5 Oct 2026 the Seoul festival portal lists it as planned (“예정”) for 4 Dec 2026 to 31 Jan 2027 at Gwanghwamun Square and six other locations, so treat every date as expected until the city publishes the programme. Ride Line 5 (purple) to Gwanghwamun Station; Exit 2 puts you on the square.

The listing names seven parts: Seoul Light Gwanghwamun (a media facade, light sculptures and a New Year countdown), the Gwanghwamun Market with Christmas stalls, the Bosingak bell ceremony, the Seoul Lantern Festival on Cheonggyecheon, Seoul Light DDP with a media facade and a Christmas town, SeoulCon with K-beauty and K-pop events, and the Seoul Plaza ice rink. Most of it is free. For exact nights, watch my events calendar.

Worth It: the Gwanghwamun Market after dark. Last season it ran 12 to 31 Dec, 6pm to 10pm, and stayed open to midnight on New Year’s Eve, so plan your evenings, not afternoons. The 2026 hours are not published yet. Skip It: DDP in daylight. The building is striking, but the light show is the reason to go, and it only works at night. DDP is at Dongdaemun History and Culture Park Station (Lines 2 green, 4 sky blue and 5 purple), Exit 1.

[AFFILIATE: Agoda hotels near Gwanghwamun or City Hall]

    Seoul Lantern Festival On Cheonggyecheon

The lanterns are Seoul’s biggest winter draw. Hanji (Korean paper) lanterns and light art line Cheonggyecheon, and the official festival page still says only “December” for 2026. Last season ran 12 Dec 2025 to 18 Jan 2026 along Cheonggyecheon and Uicheon, according to VisitKorea’s winter festival guide, and Korean media reported a record 3.83 million visitors over its run. Expect a similar mid December start.

Start at Cheonggye Plaza: Gwanghwamun Station (Line 5, purple) Exit 5, or City Hall Station (Lines 1 dark blue and 2 green) Exit 4. Walk east with the flow. My full guide: Seoul Lantern Festival 2026.

Heads Up: Weekend evenings on Cheonggyecheon move at shuffle speed for the first stretch near Cheonggye Plaza. Go on a weeknight after 8pm, or start further east and walk back west.

Christmas In Korea: Couples, Crowds And Lights

Christmas Day, Friday 25 Dec, is a public holiday, so you get a long weekend. Here is the part first timers miss: Christmas here is a date night. Restaurants in Myeongdong, Hongdae, Gangnam and Seongsu fill with couples, so book a nice Christmas Eve dinner weeks ahead.

The Shinsegae department store facade in Myeongdong is Seoul’s famous Christmas light show, usually switched on in November and kept running past New Year. Take Line 4 (sky blue) to Hoehyeon Station, Exit 7. The 2026 start date is not announced. My full plans are in Christmas In Seoul 2026, and the market by market rundown is in Seoul Christmas Market 2026.

    Ice Skating On Seoul Plaza

The Seoul Plaza rink is part of the Winter Festival listing again. Last season it opened on 19 Dec 2025 and ran 52 days to 8 Feb, with admission at 1,000 won, unchanged since the rink first opened in 2004, skates included. It opened 10am to 9:30pm on weekdays and to 11pm on Saturdays. The 2026 opening date and prices are not confirmed yet. It is outdoors, so bad air or heavy snow can close a session. Take City Hall Station (Lines 1 dark blue and 2 green) and follow the signs for Seoul Plaza.

    Skiing And Snow Trips

Gangwon resorts usually open between late November and early December, as soon as snowmaking allows. High1 opened on 28 Nov last season and O2 Resort on 5 Dec. No resort has announced a 2026 opening day yet, although 2026 to 2027 season passes are already on sale. If it is your first time on skis, December is fine for a beginner day, but January has the more reliable snow. See Your First Ski Trip In Korea.

[AFFILIATE: Klook ski day trip from Seoul]

Winter fishing festivals like the Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival start in January (10 Jan last season), so they are not a December trip. Hwacheon County is already marketing the 2027 edition to foreign visitors, but the dates are not out.

    New Year’s Eve

The Bosingak bell in Jongno rings 33 times at midnight on 31 Dec. Last year police expected about 100,000 people, closed roads from 6pm to 7am, and Line 1 (dark blue) trains skipped Jonggak Station from 11pm to 1am (in Korean). I have calmer alternatives in New Year’s Eve In Seoul.

Heads Up: If you plan to watch the bell, do not aim for Jonggak Station. Get off at City Hall or Gwanghwamun before 10pm and walk, and expect the same skip stop rule again this year.

    What Locals Know

The festival grows up in stages. The portal says 4 Dec, but in recent seasons the big pieces arrived in waves: the market and lanterns opened on 12 Dec 2025 and the rink on 19 Dec. Plan your big downtown night for mid December, not the first weekend.

There is a new photo spot for the Shinsegae facade. Seoul and Jung District swapped the solid railings at the underground passage entrance in front of the Central Post Office for clear glass in July 2026, reports Hankyung (in Korean), so you can shoot the facade without a wall in the frame.

The rink price includes more than skates. Last season the 1,000 won ticket covered skates, a helmet and knee pads, and opening day was free. Saturdays run to 11pm, but weekday mornings are calmest.

    Getting There

From Incheon Airport, take the AREX (blue) all stop train to Seoul Station, about an hour from Terminal 1, then Line 1 (dark blue) two stops to City Hall. Pay with a T-money card or tourist pass loaded at the airport. Airport limousine buses also run to the big City Hall and Gwanghwamun hotels; check the stop on Naver Map.

Once you are downtown, walk. Gwanghwamun Square to Seoul Plaza is about 10 minutes, Seoul Plaza to Cheonggye Plaza about 5, and Cheonggye Plaza to Bosingak about 10. For DDP, take Line 2 (green) from City Hall to Dongdaemun History and Culture Park, about 10 minutes. A 1 to 7 day tourist pass covers all of this; my transit card guide explains which one to buy.

    Pick Your Version

If It’s Your First Time: I’d come between 14 and 23 Dec. The market, lanterns and rink should all be running, and you beat the Christmas weekend rush on restaurants.

If You’re Bringing Kids: I’d skip the Bosingak crowd entirely and do the Seoul Plaza rink on a weekday morning, then warm up indoors. If your children hate the cold, add a few days in Busan, where daytime highs average 10°C.

If You’re Travelling Solo: I’d make December your food month. Street carts, market tents and warm soups are made for one person, and Christmas Eve is the one night to book or eat early.

    Sunbae’s Picks

My pick for one perfect December evening: Gwanghwamun Market at dusk, then a walk down Cheonggyecheon under the lanterns, then fish shaped bungeoppang from a cart. All walkable, almost all free.

I’d skip a December ski day if you only have a week. January snow is more reliable.

After 24 winters here, my rule is simple: eat what the carts sell, because it tells you the season better than any guidebook. My favourites are in Korean Winter Street Food.

    Offers Worth Knowing

Most of the Seoul Winter Festival is free, and the Seoul Plaza rink was 1,000 won last season. Gyeongbokgung costs 3,000 won for foreign adults, but Visit Seoul confirms free entry in a complete hanbok. In December it opens 9am to 5pm (last entry 4pm) and closes on Tuesdays. For transit, Seoul’s 1 to 7 day tourist passes (in Korean) cost 5,000 to 20,000 won, plus the card.

    What’s Changing In 2026

Christmas is getting busier. Korea had 10.71 million foreign visitors in the first half of 2026, and the government is aiming for 22 to 23 million this year, reports The Korea Times. My read: book your Christmas week hotel now, not in November.

Posted room rates now have teeth. Since 4 Aug 2026, homestays and traditional accommodations that fail to display rates or charge more than posted face a five day suspension on the first violation, the same report says. If a guesthouse quotes you more at the desk than the posted rate, you have leverage.

Tap to pay on buses is coming, but not yet. Seoul city buses will accept foreign Visa, Mastercard, JCB and UnionPay cards in 2027, The Korea Herald reports, with testing through the end of 2026. For December, you still need a transit card or tourist pass.

    What To Pack For December

    • A long padded coat (the knee length puffer is the Korean winter uniform for a reason)
    • Thermal top and leggings
    • Warm socks and waterproof shoes with grip
    • Hat, gloves and a scarf that covers your neck
    • Lip balm and a rich hand cream
    • A power bank, because phone batteries die faster in the cold

Stick on hand warmers (핫팩) cost very little at any convenience store, so buy them here. My full layering guide: What To Wear In Korea From October To December.

    Before You Fly

The K-ETA exemption for 22 countries ends on 31 Dec 2026, and as of 5 Oct 2026 the official K-ETA site showed no notice about 2027. If your trip runs across New Year, read K-ETA 2027 now. Everyone also files the free e-Arrival Card within 3 days before landing.

Heads Up: Unofficial K-ETA sites add service fees on top of the official 10,000 won. Apply only on k-eta.go.kr or the official app.

    Word Of The Stop

핫팩 (hat paek): a disposable hand warmer, literally “hot pack”. Ask for one at the counter and you get a packet that stays warm for hours. You will spot them in coat pockets all over the subway in deep winter.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does It Snow In Seoul In December?

Sometimes. Seoul averages 6.4 snowy days in December, but totals are small and snow rarely lasts on the main streets. For deep snow, go to the Gangwon ski resorts.

How Cold Is Korea In December?

Seoul averages 4.2°C in the daytime and minus 3.4°C at night, and wind makes it feel colder. Busan and Jeju are milder, with average highs of 10 to 11°C.

When Is The Seoul Winter Festival 2026?

The city lists it as planned for 4 Dec 2026 to 31 Jan 2027 at Gwanghwamun Square and six other sites. Most programmes are free. Expect the market and lanterns from mid December, and confirm on the official portal.

Is Christmas A Holiday In Korea?

Yes. 25 Dec is a public holiday, and in 2026 it falls on a Friday. Many Koreans treat it as a couples’ holiday, so book restaurants early.

How Much Is The Seoul Plaza Ice Rink?

It was 1,000 won last season with skates included. The 2026 price and opening date are not announced yet.

  • Seoul In Late October: Why The Second Half Is The Best

Seoul In Late October: Why The Second Half Is The Best

Seoul in October is lovely, but the second half is better. The holiday weekends are over, the Korea Forest Service still forecasts the ginkgo peak around 30 Oct and maple around 31 Oct, the Silver Grass Festival runs 17 to 23 Oct, and the month ends with a free 2,000 drone Marvel show. Expect 20°C afternoons and 10°C nights. If you can choose, book 24 Oct onwards.

Sunbae Says: Put your palace day on a weekday morning in the last week of October, and never on a Tuesday. Gyeongbokgung is closed on Tuesdays, and a locked gate is the classic first timer mistake.

Why Late October Beats Early October

Picture two trips. In one, you land on 3 Oct and share every palace and train with a whole country on a long weekend. In the other, you land on 24 Oct and the trees turn while you watch. Take the second one.

The leaves. The Korea Forest Service’s 2026 forecast, reported by the Seoul Shinmun (in Korean), puts the ginkgo peak around 30 Oct and maple and oak around 31 Oct, about 0.8 days later than the five year average. An early October cold snap didn’t move it: the 1 Oct update still said late October.

The holidays are over. National Foundation Day fell on Saturday 3 Oct with a substitute holiday on Monday 5 Oct, and Hangul Day is Friday 9 Oct. After that, there are no public holidays until Christmas.

The weather settles. On the KMA’s 1991 to 2020 averages, Seoul’s October runs 20.2°C by day and 10.6°C at night with fewer than 5 rainy days. November drops to 11.9°C and 3.5°C. Late October sits in between: crisp mornings, sunny afternoons, the best walking weather of the year.

    Which Week Should You Book?

Option Best For Cost Time My Take
17 to 23 Oct Silver grass, Design Week Free festivals 5 to 7 days Great grass, trees still half green
24 to 31 Oct Colour, drones, night walks Free festivals, book hotels early 5 to 8 days My pick. The most happens in the fewest days
1 to 8 Nov Deepest colour, Wellness Week Fewer events 5 to 7 days Gorgeous, but colder nights and the festivals are over

I’d book 24 to 31 Oct. You still catch the tail of the silver grass on the hill (the festival ends on 23 Oct, but the grass doesn’t), plus the Jeongdong Night Walk, the drone show and the first proper peak colour.

What Is On In Late October 2026

For everything, day by day, use my events calendar. These are the ones I’d build your week around.

    Dates Event Where Cost
To 17 Oct Changdeokgung Moonlight Tour Changdeokgung Lottery tickets, done
14 to 25 Oct Seoul Design Week DDP, Seongsu, Yeonhui Varies
15 to 17 Oct K-Beauty Expo Korea KINTEX, Goyang Free if preregistered

23 to 25 Oct Hanseong Baekje Culture Festival Olympic Park Varies
24 and 25 Oct Seoul BBQ Festival Nanji Camping Ground Tables 10,000 to 20,000 won
Sun 25 Oct Last car-free Jamsugyo Sunday Jamsugyo Bridge Free
29 to 31 Oct Jeongdong Night Walk Jeongdong Free
From 29 Oct Seoul Wellness Travel Week Citywide Varies
Sat 31 Oct Han River Drone Show, Marvel special Ttukseom Hangang Park Free

Seoul Silver Grass Festival, 17 to 23 Oct. The 25th edition turns Haneul Park silver, open 10am to 9pm during festival week. The city’s listing (in Korean) asks you to come by public transport because the roads jam. Full guide: Seoul Silver Grass Festival At Haneul Park.

Hanseong Baekje Culture Festival, 23 to 25 Oct. Songpa’s big history festival at the 88 Lawn in Olympic Park, with performances, food stalls and hands on booths, per the Seoul festival portal (in Korean). Use Olympic Park Station (Lines 5 and 9), Exit 3.

Seoul BBQ Festival, 24 and 25 Oct. Grill your own Korean barbecue at Nanji Camping Ground in three sessions a day. Gas tables are 10,000 won and charcoal 20,000 won, meat bought on site. The second booking round (in Korean) opened on Naver at 6pm on 6 Oct, and the city says some walk in seats are kept. A shuttle (1,500 won a ride) loops from Digital Media City Station Exit 2, 11am to 8:55pm.

Last Car-Free Jamsugyo Sunday, 25 Oct. Every Sunday from 2pm to 10pm the low bridge under Banpo Bridge goes car free, with food trucks and media art in October. This is the festival’s final run: Herald Business reports (in Korean) that Jamsugyo goes fully pedestrian from the second half of 2027. Use Express Bus Terminal Station (Lines 3, 7, 9) and check Naver Map for the exit.

Jeongdong Night Walk, 29 to 31 Oct. Historic buildings along Deoksugung-gil and Jeongdong-gil open late, with palace music, busking and history walks. The Seoul festival portal (in Korean) lists 29 Oct as a preview day and the opening concert at Deoksugung on the evening of 30 Oct. City Hall Station (Lines 1 and 2), Exit 2.

Han River Drone Light Show, Saturday 31 Oct. Free, at the Ttukseom Hangang Park Water Stage. The city’s listing (in Korean) runs the programme 7:30pm to 9:25pm with the drones up 8:30pm to 8:45pm. This one is a Marvel special made with Walt Disney Company Korea, using 2,000 drones, the most the city has ever flown, reports the Kyunghyang Shinmun (in Korean). Line 7 to Jayang Station, Exit 1. Wind or rain can delay or cancel it.

Heads Up: Saturday 31 Oct stacks three crowds on one night: Halloween, the record size drone show (shows in the first half of 2026 averaged about 25,000 people each), and possibly a Korean Series game. Arrive at Ttukseom by 7pm, pick a spot near an open path, and don’t try to leave through Jayang Station the minute the drones land.

Halloween. Lotte World and Everland both run Halloween seasons into November; I compare them in Lotte World Vs Everland. For the night itself, read Halloween In Seoul 2026 first, especially the crowd safety section.

Korean Series baseball. The KBO regular season wraps up by 12 Oct and the postseason starts on or after 14 Oct, reports MK Sports (in Korean), so the final lands in late October or early November. Dates depend on the playoffs.

    Where To See The Colour

My late October loop for a first timer: Gyeongbokgung at opening, walk north along the palace wall toward Samcheong-dong for lunch, then Haneul Park for sunset.

Gyeongbokgung is 3,000 won for adults, 9am to 6pm in October (last entry 5pm) and 9am to 5pm from November, closed on Tuesdays, according to Visit Seoul. Use Gyeongbokgung Station (Line 3, orange), Exit 5, and be at the gate for 9am, before the tour coaches.

Heads Up: Gyeongbokgung’s autumn night viewing ended on 2 Oct and the Changdeokgung Moonlight Tour ends on 17 Oct. Some English event lists still show palace nights running later. If you want a lantern lit evening in late October, the Jeongdong Night Walk is the one that is actually on.

Worth It: Haneul Park on a weekday afternoon, timed so you reach the top for golden hour. Sunset falls around 5:55pm on 17 Oct and 5:35pm by 31 Oct. Skip It: a weekend Seoraksan day trip around its forecast peak of Tuesday 20 Oct. The buses and trails are packed. Go midweek or stay overnight; see Seoraksan In Autumn.

[AFFILIATE: Klook Seoraksan day tour from Seoul]

My full list of spots is in Seoul Fall Foliage 2026 and Seven Golden Ginkgo Walks In Seoul.

    Getting There

All of this works on the subway. The adult base fare on a transit card is 1,550 won; if you will ride a lot, compare a short tourist pass in which transit card tourists need.

Haneul Park. Take Line 6 to World Cup Stadium Station, Exit 1. From there it is 30 to 40 minutes on foot, or you can take village bus Mapo 08, per VisitKorea. At the bottom of the hill you choose how to get up:

Option Best For Cost Time My Take
Haneul Stairs Fit walkers Free About 15 to 20 min My pick going up. The view opens as you climb
Maengkkong electric car Kids, knees 2,000 won one way, 3,000 return About 10 min ride plus queue Best for coming down tired

Visit Seoul’s Haneul Park page lists the electric car from Nanjicheon Park every 10 to 20 minutes, 9am to 7pm in October, last ride up 30 minutes before closing. Outside festival week the park itself shuts at 7pm in October.

Heads Up: On festival nights the park stays open to 9pm, but don’t count on the electric car for the ride down after dark. Ask at the boarding point, and keep your phone torch handy for the stairs.

[SUNBAE FIELD TEST: time the electric car queue at Nanjicheon on a festival weekday versus Saturday afternoon, and note the best photo spot at the top for golden hour]

Ttukseom drone show. Line 7 to Jayang Station, Exit 1, and the Water Stage is a short walk. Check Naver Map for live journey times from your hotel, and plan your ride home before you go.

Jeongdong Night Walk. Line 1 (dark blue) or 2 to City Hall Station, Exit 2, and you are at Deoksugung’s main gate. Follow the palace’s stone wall path, Deoksugung Doldam-gil, into Jeongdong-gil.

    Behind The Scenes

The hill is a rubbish mountain. Haneul Park sits on Nanjido, Seoul’s landfill from 1978 to 1993, which rose to 98m. The city stabilised it and opened World Cup Park in 2002. Koreans love telling you this as you stand in the grass.

“Peak” doesn’t mean “nearly over”. In the Forest Service forecast, 절정 (jeoljeong, peak) is the day about half the trees have turned, so the colour keeps deepening for days after. If you arrive on 1 Nov, you haven’t missed it.

The fireworks already happened. Plenty of older guides still put the Seoul International Fireworks Festival in October. In 2026 it was on 5 Sep, per the Seoul festival portal, so late October’s big sky show is the drones.

    Pick Your Version

If It’s Your First Time: Arrive around 24 Oct and stay into early November. You catch the drone show, the Jeongdong Night Walk and the peak colour in one trip. File your e-Arrival Card within the three days before you land.

If You’re Bringing Kids: Do Haneul Park on a weekday and ride the electric car at least one way. Save the theme park and the drone show for kids who can handle a late, crowded night.

If You’re Travelling Solo: Take the Jeongdong Night Walk on Friday 30 Oct. It is free, walkable and easy to join alone.

If You’re Here For A Reset: Land just before 29 Oct so Seoul Wellness Travel Week and the peak foliage overlap. Palaces in the morning, rest in the afternoon.

    Sunbae’s Picks

My pick for the single best week: 24 to 31 Oct. After 24 autumns here, that is the week I’d give a friend visiting for the first time.

If I only had one evening, I’d spend golden hour on Haneul Park, then take the subway home. Silver grass and city lights from one hill.

I’d skip chasing a palace night ticket in late October, because there isn’t one. Do the Jeongdong Night Walk instead.

My pick for your palace morning: Gyeongbokgung at 9am in hanbok, then the free English tour.

[AFFILIATE: Klook hanbok rental near Gyeongbokgung]

[SUNBAE STORY: a late October evening on Haneul Park or Jeongdong-gil that shows why this is the week to come]

    Offers Worth Knowing

The Silver Grass Festival, Jamsugyo Sundays, the Jeongdong Night Walk and the drone show are all free. At Gyeongbokgung, Visit Seoul lists free entry in full hanbok and free English tours at 11:00, 13:30 and 15:30 (not Tuesdays). VisitKorea lists free entry for under 19s and over 65s.

    What’s Changing In 2026

Seoul’s night shows have gone global. The first half drone shows drew about 125,000 people, and one in three was a foreign visitor, according to the same Kyunghyang report. Expect the 31 Oct show to be busier than any before it.

Jamsugyo is changing for good. This autumn is the last festival before the bridge goes permanently pedestrian in 2027. If you want the food trucks and the bridge party, 25 Oct is your final chance.

What To Wear In Late October

Layers: a T-shirt, a sweater or hoodie, and a light jacket for the day, plus a warmer layer for evenings by the river, which get cold fast once the sun drops. Comfortable shoes matter most. More in What To Wear In Korea From October To December.

    A Simple Late October Plan

    • Weekday: Gyeongbokgung at 9am, then Samcheong-dong
    • Friday 23 Oct: Haneul Park on the last festival day, up by 4:30pm for golden hour
    • Saturday 24 Oct: Seoul BBQ Festival at Nanji if you booked, or the Baekje festival at Olympic Park
    • Friday 30 Oct: Jeongdong Night Walk
    • Saturday 31 Oct: Drone show at Ttukseom

    Word Of The Stop

억새 (eoksae): silver grass, the tall feathery grass that covers Haneul Park in autumn. “Eoksae chukje” (억새 축제) means silver grass festival.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is Late October A Good Time To Visit Seoul?

Yes, it is my favourite time. The foliage is forecast to peak around 30 and 31 Oct, there are no public holidays, and the last week packs in free night events.

When Do The Leaves Change In Seoul In 2026?

The Korea Forest Service forecasts ginkgo around 30 Oct and maple around 31 Oct 2026, and Seoul usually holds its colour into early November.

Is The Han River Drone Show On 31 October 2026 Free?

Yes. It is free, at Ttukseom Hangang Park, with drones from 8:30pm. Weather can cancel it, so check the official drone show site on the day.

Are There Night Palace Tours In Late October?

Not in 2026. Gyeongbokgung’s night viewing ended on 2 Oct and the Changdeokgung Moonlight Tour ends on 17 Oct. The Jeongdong Night Walk (29 to 31 Oct) is the best alternative.

    How I Checked This

On 4 Oct 2026 I rechecked every date against the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s listings, the Seoul festival portal, the Seoul parks office, Visit Seoul, VisitKorea and organiser pages, and the foliage forecast and drone show details against Korean newspapers, including the 1 Oct foliage update. Sunset times are my own calculation for central Seoul. The Korean Series dates are not set, the foliage peaks are forecasts that can move by several days, and the electric car’s festival night hours were not published.

K-ETA 2027: What Happens When The Exemption Ends On 31 December

The temporary K-ETA exemption for 22 countries, including the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and Japan, ends on 31 Dec 2026 (Korea time). As of 5 Oct 2026, Korea has not announced an extension into 2027. If nothing changes, you need an approved K-ETA before boarding from 1 Jan 2027. It costs 10,000 won and lasts three years.

Sunbae Says: If you are flying to Korea any time after Christmas, apply for a K-ETA now. It is valid for three years, replaces the e-Arrival Card, and makes the whole 2027 question irrelevant for you.

    What The K-ETA Is

Picture the one moment this matters: you are at the check in desk in Toronto or London on 1 Jan, and the agent checks your Korean travel authorisation. That check happens before you board, not when you land. The K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization) is that authorisation: an online approval, granted in advance, for people who can visit Korea without a visa. It is not a visa.

The key numbers, from the official K-ETA application guide:

    • Fee: 10,000 won, non refundable even if refused, plus a separate online payment fee
    • Validity: 3 years, or until your passport expires if sooner
    • Processing: typically 72 hours or less, longer when applications surge
    • Stay length: set by your nationality, not by the K-ETA
    • Bonus: approved holders do not submit the arrival card

If this is your first trip, my Start Here hub puts all the pre flight jobs in order, and Korea In November 2026 shows you what the season looks like.

Who Is Exempt Until 31 Dec 2026

The temporary exemption covers 22 countries and regions: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Macao, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States (including Guam).

The Korean Consulate General in New York’s notice gives the period as 1 Jan to 31 Dec 2026, Korean Standard Time. Exempt travellers without a K-ETA file the free e-Arrival Card within three days before arrival instead.

Separately, since 3 Jul 2023 travellers aged 17 and under and 65 and over have not needed a K-ETA in advance, as ANA’s K-ETA page confirms. They still file the arrival card.

    So What Happens In 2027?

Nobody outside the government knows yet, and I will not pretend otherwise. Here is what is on the record.

The default is “K-ETA required”. The US State Department’s Korea page already says that starting 1 Jan 2027 you will need a K-ETA before travelling. That is not a new decision. It is simply what happens if Seoul does nothing.

The official portal has said nothing new. On 5 Oct 2026 the latest exemption notice on the K-ETA portal was still the 2026 one, covering 1 Jan to 31 Dec 2026, and it says nothing about 2027.

Last year the answer came late. The Prime Minister flagged the 2026 extension in September 2025, but in mid December the Los Angeles consulate was still “waiting for official documents”, the Korea Daily reported (in Korean). Formal confirmation came on 23 Dec 2025. This year I found no comparable September signal in the Korean press.

So there are two realistic outcomes:

Scenario one: another extension. The exemption rolls into 2027, probably announced late in the year again. Nothing changes for you; you keep filing the e-Arrival Card.

Scenario two: it ends. From 1 Jan 2027, travellers from those 22 countries need an approved K-ETA before boarding, as visitors from other visa free countries already do. No K-ETA, no boarding.

I will update this page as soon as the Ministry of Justice or a Korean embassy posts a notice.

    Your Options, Compared

Option Best For Cost Time My Take
Get a K-ETA now Any trip touching 2027, repeat visitors 10,000 won plus card fee About 10 min to apply, up to 72 hours to approve My pick. Cheap, three years, no arrival cards.
Wait for the decision Trips starting in mid to late January or later Free until you apply Risky if the news lands in late December Fine if you set a calendar reminder for 15 Dec.
e-Arrival Card only Trips that end before 31 Dec 2026 Free 5 to 10 min, within 3 days of landing Perfect if you are home for Christmas.
Paid “visa service” site Nobody Many times the official fee Same wait Skip. You pay more for the same form.

My call: if your return flight lands after 31 Dec, or you think you will visit again by 2029, apply now and stop refreshing the news.

    What Locals Know

Korean notices come first, in Korean. The decision belongs to the Ministry of Justice, and last year’s confirmation went up on the K-ETA portal as a notice titled “한시 면제 기간 연장 알림” (temporary exemption extension notice). English news followed. If you can spot that phrase, you will know before most travel sites do.

Koreans get burned by the mirror image of this scam. This autumn the Korean press ran warnings from the Korea Consumer Agency about lookalike sites charging Koreans up to 250,000 won for US and Canadian travel permits that cost a fraction of that. The same trick runs on K-ETA searches in English. Type the address yourself.

The portal posts practical warnings too. On 30 Sep 2026 it warned that Gmail users face delayed emails (in Korean) and asked applicants to use another email, noting Outlook and Hotmail can lag as well. It was also offline overnight on 8 to 9 Oct 2026 for maintenance.

Heads Up: Do not apply with a Gmail address right now. The official portal says approval emails to Gmail are delayed. Use another email provider, and check your status on k-eta.go.kr rather than waiting for the inbox.

    Where To Do It

There is no counter to visit. You apply online at k-eta.go.kr or in the official K-ETA app, before you fly. You cannot apply at Incheon on arrival, because the airline checks your status at check in.

    1. Go to k-eta.go.kr or download the official K-ETA app. Check the address bar says .go.kr.
    2. Have your passport and a recent colour photo of your face ready.
    3. Enter your passport details and the rest of the form, then upload the photo.
    4. Pay 10,000 won plus the payment fee by card.
    5. Wait for approval, then check your status on the official site. ANA advises applying at least 72 hours before you travel.
    6. Check that the name and passport number match your passport exactly.

One quirk: if your passport is from an exempt country, the portal shows a “K-ETA exempt” pop up when you scan it. You can still apply and pay voluntarily, the official notice confirms, so do not mistake the pop up for an error.

    Should You Apply Now?

Worth It: a K-ETA for anyone landing on or after 1 Jan 2027, anyone on a trip that crosses New Year, and repeat visitors. For 10,000 won you remove the risk of being refused boarding, and you skip the e-Arrival Card on every trip for three years.

Skip It: any third party website that charges more than the official fee. Anything other than k-eta.go.kr or the official app is an agent adding a margin, at best.

Flying home before 31 Dec, say straight after Christmas in Seoul, with no plans to return? You do not need one. File the free e-Arrival Card and relax.

    [AFFILIATE: travel insurance]

    Timing Traps Around New Year

The exemption dates are in Korean Standard Time, and the airline checks your status at check in. If you leave North America or Europe on 31 Dec, you usually land on 1 Jan. Do not bet your trip on how a check in agent reads that. Get the K-ETA. Coming for the countdown? Read New Year’s Eve In Seoul and Korea In December 2026 too.

Heads Up: Any flight that lands in Korea on or after 1 Jan 2027 is the risk zone. Departure date does not matter; arrival in Korea time does.

[AFFILIATE: Agoda hotels in Seoul for New Year]

A K-ETA does not change how long you may stay. That is set by your nationality: GOV.UK lists up to 90 days for British visitors, the US State Department lists 90 days for Americans, and other countries differ, so check yours before booking a long trip. Canada’s official travel advice also warns about online e-Arrival Card scams.

    Pick Your Version

If It’s Your First Time: Landing before mid December and home before Christmas? I’d skip the K-ETA and file the e-Arrival Card. If your dates touch New Year, I’d apply this week.

If You’re Bringing Kids: Children aged 17 and under do not need a K-ETA in advance, but you as the adult do if the exemption ends. They still need arrival cards. My Seoul With Kids In Winter guide covers the rest.

If You’re Travelling Solo: I’d get the K-ETA. Alone, you have no one to troubleshoot a check in problem with, and 10,000 won is cheap insurance.

If You’re Here For A Reset: For a spa or temple trip, the K-ETA rules are the same as for anyone. For medical treatment, the visa route is a separate question, so start at my Reset hub.

    Sunbae’s Picks

My pick for anyone flying after 20 Dec: apply now, pay the 10,000 won, and stop refreshing the news.

I’d skip every paid “K-ETA service” website. Type the official address yourself.

If I were flying on 31 Dec, I’d hold a K-ETA, full stop, for the time zone reason above.

After 24 years of watching rules change here, my rule is to trust official notices over rumours, and to act on what is published, not on what is expected.

    Offers Worth Knowing

The e-Arrival Card is free. The official K-ETA fee is 10,000 won for three years of trips. Travellers aged 17 and under and 65 and over do not need a K-ETA in advance. Once you land, Seoul’s 1 to 7 day tourist transit passes are the next saving; see Which Transit Card You Need.

    What’s Changing In 2026

Long haul visitors are the growth story. Korea had about 18.94 million foreign visitors in 2025, and Yanolja Research found US arrivals reached 1.48 million, up 42.1% on 2019, with the Americas up 45.8% and Oceania up 44.5%. Most of those markets are on the exempt list. My read, and it is only a read: the stakes are higher than ever, so expect the decision to be taken seriously, but do not expect it early.

Entry paperwork already changed once this year. The e-Arrival Card became mandatory for foreign nationals from 1 Jan 2026, as EY’s tax alert notes. Keep it and the K-ETA straight with my travel apps guide.

Medical visitors get a faster lane. From 1 Oct 2026, 112 certified medical institutions and agencies can use three day electronic visa processing for foreign patients, The Korea Times reports. That is a visa route, separate from the K-ETA.

    Word Of The Stop

전자여행허가 (jeonja yeohaeng heoga): electronic travel authorisation, the Korean name for K-ETA. Pair it with 한시 면제 (hansi myeonje), “temporary exemption”, and you can read the headline that matters.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Do Americans Need A K-ETA In 2027?

If the exemption is not extended, yes: the US State Department already says US citizens will need a K-ETA from 1 Jan 2027. As of 5 Oct 2026, no extension has been announced. A K-ETA issued now stays valid for three years.

How Much Does A K-ETA Cost?

10,000 won on the official site, plus a small online payment fee. It is not refundable, even if your application is refused.

How Long Is A K-ETA Valid?

Three years from approval, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It covers multiple trips.

    Do Children Need A K-ETA?

Children aged 17 and under and adults aged 65 and over do not need one in advance. They still file the e-Arrival Card.

Do K-ETA Holders Still File The Arrival Card?

No, if you enter on that K-ETA. If you enter on a visa, you file the card even with a K-ETA.

Still unconfirmed: whether the exemption will be extended into 2027.

  • Korea e-Arrival Card: How To Fill It In Step By Step

Korea e-Arrival Card: How To Fill It In Step By Step

The Korea e-Arrival Card is a free online form at e-arrivalcard.go.kr that most visa free and visa holding visitors file from three days before landing (Korea time). It takes about 5 to 10 minutes: passport photo, flight, purpose of visit, where you’re staying, done. If you hold a valid K-ETA, you skip it.

Sunbae Says: Do it the evening before your flight, at home, on decent Wi-Fi. Not at the gate, and never on a website that asks for money. The real one ends in .go.kr and costs exactly zero won.

    Who Needs The e-Arrival Card

Picture it: you’re balancing a backpack on one knee, photographing your passport under corridor lights while your whole flight overtakes you. Don’t be that person.

The official list of who must declare is short. You file if you are:

    • A citizen of a country on the temporary K-ETA exemption (US, Canada, UK, Australia, Japan and the rest of the 22, through 31 Dec 2026) and you have no K-ETA
    • A traveller from a K-ETA country who is 17 or under, or 65 or over, and so never needed a K-ETA
    • Entering on a Korean visa (even if you also hold a K-ETA)

You do not file if you hold a valid K-ETA and enter on it, a Korean residence card (including permanent resident and overseas Korean resident cards), or you’re airline crew. Transit passengers who never pass immigration don’t file either, per the official FAQ.

The trap most guides miss: kids and grandparents from exempt countries. They don’t need a K-ETA, so families assume they need nothing. They still need the arrival card.

New to all this? My Start Here hub lists every pre flight job in order.

    When To Submit

The official e-Arrival guide says you can file from three days before arrival, counted in Korean Standard Time: arrival day, the day before, or two days before. It lapses 72 hours after you submit, or once you’ve cleared immigration. Every trip needs a fresh one.

Flying from North America? Count back in Korea time, not your time. Land Saturday morning in Seoul, and your window opened Thursday Korea time, which is still Wednesday morning in Vancouver.

Heads Up: The official site is offline from 18:00 Thursday 8 Oct to 02:30 Friday 9 Oct 2026 (Korea time) for system work, per its notices page, and the window may shift. Landing 9 to 11 Oct? File before 6pm KST on 8 Oct, or after 02:30 on 9 Oct.

    Your Options, With My Take

Option Best For Cost Time My Take
Online, at home, the night before Almost everyone Free 5 to 10 min My pick. Calm, inside the window, time to redo a blurry photo.
Online at the departure gate Last minute planners Free 10 min plus stress Works, but boarding calls and 5% battery breed typos.
Online after landing, before immigration People who forgot Free 10 to 15 min Legal and fine. You’ll just be the one in the corridor.
Paper card at the airport No phone, dead battery Free 5 min Still accepted in 2026, but slower and not something to plan around.
A K-ETA instead Repeat visitors, trips into 2027 10,000 won Apply at least 72 hours ahead Worth it if you’ll be back within three years.

What You Need Before You Start

The official checklist is a valid passport, a working email address, your arrival date and flight number, and where you’re staying. A departure date is asked for; the departure flight number is optional. If you haven’t booked a way out, the FAQ says an approximate date is fine, though officers may ask about your plans.

Two things the official checklist doesn’t spell out: the form asks your occupation, and you’ll want the full address of your first night’s stay, ideally in Korean too (copy it from your booking or the map apps in my travel app guide). If you’re staying at several places, the FAQ says enter your main one, or the first.

How To Fill It In, Step By Step

The official process guide has five steps. Here they are with what actually trips people up.

    1. Open the real site. Type e-arrivalcard.go.kr yourself rather than clicking an ad. It works on phone or laptop, there’s no app, and it runs in seven languages including English.
    2. Agree to the terms and enter your email twice. This is the lead filer’s email. A child under 14 can’t be the lead filer.
    3. Add passports. Photograph the photo page flat, no glare, with the two lines of machine readable text sharp and fully in frame. If the scan fails, you can type the details in by hand.
    4. Add your trip. Arrival date, flight number, departure date, purpose (tourism for most readers), accommodation, contact details and occupation.
    5. Check, verify, submit. Since 6 May 2026 there’s a verification code step before submission. You then get an issue number and can save the whole thing as a PDF.

Save that PDF straight away. The site itself warns that confirmation emails can be delayed or lost for Gmail, Outlook.com, Hotmail and QQ users. You don’t have to show anything at the desk, but the issue number is how you edit later.

Made a mistake? Before immigration you can change your address, purpose or departure details using the issue number or email check. The arrival date can only be changed within three days of your first submission; otherwise, just file a new one.

[AFFILIATE: Klook eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi for arrival]

Heads Up: Lookalike sites copy the flag and the wording, then charge a “processing fee”. In March 2026 Korea’s embassy in Beijing warned about fake sites on Baidu asking 232 to 510 yuan (about 50,000 to 110,000 won) to file, Hankyung reported (in Korean). The real form is free. If a page wants your card number, close the tab.

    Families And Kids

On a phone, one submission covers up to 9 people. On a PC, a group submission covers up to 1,000, as long as everyone shares the same arrival date and flight. For a family of four, the phone version is plenty.

The law says the traveller fills in their own card, but the FAQ allows someone else to file when the traveller can’t, which covers your kids. Lay every passport out on the table before you start; the photo step is where tired parents lose patience. More family logistics in Seoul With Kids In Late Autumn And Winter.

Where To Do It At The Airport

Forgot? You’re not stuck. The official FAQ says that even if you didn’t file before landing, you can fill in the e-Arrival Card or a paper card before immigration. When VisasNews asked the Ministry of Justice in March 2026, the ministry said paper and electronic cards run in parallel until it announces otherwise, and that tablets and QR codes linking to the official site are provided in arrival areas.

Here’s the practical drill. Once the crew says phones are fine, connect to the airport’s free Wi-Fi on the walk from the gate, and use the corridor before the immigration hall to file on your phone. Incheon T1, T2, Gimpo, Gimhae and Jeju all work the same way; the form doesn’t care which airport you land at.

[SUNBAE FIELD TEST: walk the Incheon T1 and T2 arrival corridors and note exactly where the e-Arrival tablets and QR code posters stand, whether paper cards are still stacked near the desks, and whether airlines still hand them out on board]

Once you’re through, you’ll want a transit card before the train; which transit card tourists need now explains why your first airport ride runs on T-money.

    Worth It Or Skip It

Skip It: any site, agency or “fast track” that charges you. Korea doesn’t sell a faster arrival card. The government site, in its own notice, warns about similarly named sites asking for personal details or fees.

Worth It: a K-ETA instead, if you’ll visit Korea again within three years or your trip runs into 2027. It costs 10,000 won, lasts three years, and the official K-ETA guide says approved holders are exempt from the arrival card. The 22 country exemption ends 31 Dec 2026 and nothing about 2027 had been announced as of 4 Oct. My K-ETA 2027 guide has the decision in full.

    Pick Your Version

If It’s Your First Time: File the night before you fly, save the PDF, screenshot the issue number. One less thing between you and your first convenience store coffee.

If You’re Bringing Kids: Do the whole family in one phone submission, passports laid out first. Remember the under 17 rule: your kids need this card even though they don’t need a K-ETA.

If You’re Travelling Solo: File the evening before and send the PDF to someone at home along with your hotel address. My Solo In Seoul guide covers the rest.

If You’re Here For A Reset: If you’re coming for a health checkup on a visa, note the twist: visa holders file the card even if they also hold a K-ETA.

    Sunbae’s Picks

My pick for timing: the evening before departure, at home. Inside the window, room to fix mistakes.

My pick for email: a non Gmail address if you have one, given the site’s own warning. If not, save the PDF on the spot.

I’d skip filing at the gate. Gate Wi-Fi, a boarding call and a dying phone are how typos happen.

If you’ll be back within three years, I’d buy the K-ETA once and forget arrival cards altogether.

After 24 years here, my rule is simple: every form that can be done at home gets done at home. Then pack properly with my autumn and winter packing guide.

    Offers Worth Knowing

The e-Arrival Card is free, full stop. The official K-ETA is 10,000 won for three years of trips and replaces the arrival card. After you land, Seoul’s 1 to 7 day tourist transit passes are the next real saving.

[AFFILIATE: Klook AREX (blue) airport rail ticket]

    Behind The Scenes

Paper never officially died. Plenty of English guides say paper cards ended on 31 Dec 2025, because that was the plan VisitKorea announced. But the Ministry of Justice’s own Korean explainer (in Korean) frames the e-card as an online way to submit the same card, and the ministry told VisasNews both run in parallel until a formal announcement. What it means for you: file online, but nobody gets turned away for forgetting.

The form quietly changed this year. In March 2026 the government said it would drop the “previous departure point” and “next destination” questions after a diplomatic row with Taiwan over how it was labelled, Kyunghyang Shinmun reported (in Korean). If an older guide shows fields you don’t see, that’s why.

The officer already has your card. The FAQ is clear: if your details are right, the inspector sees your submission without you showing anything. The issue number matters only if something doesn’t match.

    What’s Changing In 2026

More people are landing alongside you. Korea drew 10.71 million foreign visitors in the first half of 2026, up 21%, and arrivals through regional airports jumped 42.5% year on year in June, Korea JoongAng Daily reports. My read: busier halls everywhere, so filing ahead is the cheapest queue skip there is.

Security tightened. The verification code step arrived on 6 May 2026, aimed at making sure a real person submits each card. Expect one extra screen, not a headache.

2027 is the wild card. If the K-ETA exemption ends on 31 Dec, travellers from those 22 countries will need a K-ETA to board, and a K-ETA replaces the arrival card. Visiting over New Year? Read K-ETA 2027 now, not on the 30th.

    What If I Forget?

Breathe. File on your phone on the walk to immigration, or ask for a paper card. You won’t be refused entry for not filing in advance. You’ll just add ten minutes to a long day. If you want the rest of the arrival etiquette, from queue manners to the escalator, my unwritten rules of Korea cover it.

    Word Of The Stop

입국신고서 (ipguk singoseo): arrival card. “Ipguk” means entering the country, and you’ll see 입국 on every arrivals sign. The online version is 전자입국신고 (jeonja ipguk singo), “electronic arrival report”.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is The Korea e-Arrival Card Free?

Yes. The official site, e-arrivalcard.go.kr, charges nothing. Any site asking for payment is a third party, and some are outright scams.

How Many Days Before My Flight Can I Submit It?

From three days before arrival, counted in Korean Standard Time: arrival day, the day before or two days before. It’s valid for 72 hours after you submit.

    Do I Need The e-Arrival Card If I Have A K-ETA?

No, if you enter on that valid K-ETA. If you enter on a visa, you file the card even with a K-ETA.

Do Children Need An e-Arrival Card?

Yes. Kids from K-ETA countries don’t need a K-ETA if they’re 17 or under, but they do need the arrival card. A parent files for them, up to 9 people per phone submission.

Are Paper Arrival Cards Still Used In 2026?

Yes, as a fallback. The official FAQ says you can fill in an e-Arrival Card or a paper card before immigration, and the Ministry of Justice says both run in parallel until it announces otherwise.

    How I Checked This

On 4 Oct 2026 I rechecked every rule against the official e-Arrival guide, target list, process guide, FAQ and notices (including the 8 to 9 Oct outage, the 6 May verification step and the email warning), the Ministry of Justice’s Korean page, and the official K-ETA guide. Paper card status rests on the official FAQ and the ministry’s statement to VisasNews. I could not confirm whether the Taiwan related field changes are live, or where exactly each airport’s tablets stand.

Seoul’s 30 day Climate Card stopped working on 1 October 2026, but the tourist version survives. Short term Climate Card passes (1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 days, 5,000 to 20,000 won) still give you unlimited subway and city bus rides inside Seoul. Ride three or more times a day? Buy one. Fewer, or lots of day trips? A plain T-money card wins.

Sunbae Says: Charge the pass on the morning you start riding, never the night before. Day one starts with the first train on the day you charge, and a 1 day pass dies with the last train that same night.

Picture it: you come up the escalator at Seoul Station with a suitcase, the machine offers five passes in two languages, and a queue is forming behind you. This page is so you already know which button to press.

What Actually Changed On 1 October

Three things, and only one of them is bad news for you.

The 30 day card is gone. Per Seoul City Hall’s shutdown FAQ (in Korean), prepaid 30 day cards could be charged until 31 August, the last prepaid riding day was 29 September, postpaid cards ran to 30 September, and the whole 30 day service ended on 1 October 2026. Residents moved to a refund scheme built on the national 모두의 카드 (“everyone’s card”), which needs a Korean bank account, as The Korea Herald explained. Visitors can’t use it without a registration number and Korean ID verification, the city’s FAQ confirms.

The short passes stay. The same FAQ says the 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 day passes continue “as before”, and new physical cards are still on sale.

The bad news: coverage shrank to Seoul. From 1 October, the city’s coverage notice (in Korean) limits the short passes to subway sections inside Seoul, Seoul licensed city and village buses (night and circular buses included) and the Airport Railroad (blue) to Incheon Airport T1 and T2. The old bonus areas in Gimpo, Goyang, Gwacheon, Guri, Seongnam, Hanam and Namyangju are out.

Heads Up: Many English guides still say the pass reaches Gwacheon, Hanam or Ilsan. Not since 1 October. Seoul Grand Park station on Line 4 (sky blue) sits in Gwacheon, so a zoo day now needs a pay per ride card for that leg.

You may also read that the 30 day card ended on 29 August. The city’s own FAQ says 29 September for prepaid riding. Trust the city.

The Prices And What They Cover

Pass Price Break even at 1,550 won per subway trip
1 day 5,000 won 4 trips that day
    2 days 8,000 won 6 trips
    3 days 10,000 won 7 trips
    5 days 15,000 won 10 trips
    7 days 20,000 won 13 trips

Add 3,000 won once for the physical card, per the city’s short pass page (in Korean). The card itself is not refundable. The adult subway base fare on a transit card has been 1,550 won since 28 June 2025, and a Seoul city bus is 1,500 won.

Covered: Seoul subway lines inside the city limits, Seoul licensed blue, green, yellow and village buses, and the all stop Airport Railroad (blue) ride from Seoul out to the airport.

Not covered: the Shinbundang Line (red), GTX, subway sections outside Seoul, red express buses, airport limousine buses, buses licensed by other cities, Ttareungyi bikes and the Hangang Bus ferry.

The airport rule is the one nobody gets right. Since September 2024 you can ride the Airport Railroad and get off at Incheon T1 or T2 with any Climate Card (in Korean), but you cannot board there with it. So the pass is no help on arrival day and a free ride on departure day.

Heads Up: Tapping a Climate Card at the Incheon Airport gates on arrival will not work. Buy your first ride on T-money, then charge the pass in the city.

    Your Options, With My Opinions

Option Best For Cost Time To Set Up My Take
Short term Climate Card Three or more rides a day inside Seoul 3,000 won card plus 5,000 to 20,000 won pass 2 minutes at a station machine My pick for city days. Unlimited rides kill the fare maths
T-money Slow travellers, day trips outside Seoul 3,000 to 5,000 won card, then pay per ride 1 minute at any convenience store The backup everyone needs. Works nationwide
WOWPASS People who also want a prepaid shopping card and currency exchange 5,000 won registration 5 to 10 minutes at a kiosk with your passport Fine if you want the wallet. Overkill for transit alone
NAMANE Fans who want a custom photo card as a souvenir About 6,000 to 7,000 won card 5 minutes at a kiosk Pure fun. Works like a pay per ride card
Korea Tour Card Bargain hunters who will use partner discounts Check the T-money site 1 minute A T-money for foreigners with shop and attraction perks. Nice, not essential

WOWPASS lists the 5,000 won registration fee, and its own help pages say the T-money side is topped up with won cash at stations or convenience stores. VisitKorea’s transport card page also lists M-pass, a foreigners only card at 15,000 won for one day. At three times the Climate Card price, skip it.

My verdict: a Climate Card for your Seoul days plus a T-money for arrival day and day trips. That pair covers every trip in this guide.

Worth It: the 5 or 7 day pass if you explore the city. At 20,000 won for a week, two rides a day pays for it.

Skip It: the 1 day pass on arrival day. Most people ride twice after a flight, and two trips on T-money cost 3,100 won.

Where To Buy And Charge It

Buy the card at the new style card vending machines in Seoul Metro stations on Lines 1 to 8, or at convenience stores near Line 9 (gold), Ui Sinseol Line and Sillim Line stations, says the city’s short pass page. The city confirms it can’t be bought outside Korea, so ignore anyone selling one online before you fly.

Charge the pass at the station charging machines with cash or a card. Since 17 March 2026, 440 new machines at 273 stations on Lines 1 to 8 (in Korean) accept foreign Visa and Mastercard cards plus mobile wallets for new Climate Cards, short pass charges and single tickets, with an average 3.7% fee. As a visitor, plan on the physical card.

Your easiest stops: Seoul Station (Lines 1 and 4), Myeong-dong (Line 4, sky blue) and Hongik Univ. (Line 2, green) all have the new machines inside, by the ticket gates. They are also the three busiest for foreign card sales, per Money Today (in Korean). For your first T-money at Incheon, the CU stores in Terminal 1 arrivals (near exits A and F) are open around the clock.

[SUNBAE FIELD TEST: photograph the Climate Card menu on a new machine at Seoul Station and note the exact button order in English mode]

Refunds exist but are fiddly. You get back the charge minus what you rode minus a 500 won fee, by bank transfer or partial card cancellation, and only while the pass is still valid. Expired means no refund. The T-money helpline is 1644-0088.

    Behind The Scenes

Why the short passes survived. The city’s FAQ says it plainly: the short passes “cannot be combined with 모두의 카드”, so they stayed in Seoul’s hands. The 30 day card died in a national scheme fight; The Korea Times reported the transport ministry and the city sparring in public over the replacement. Tourists were the one group nobody wanted to upset.

What Koreans call it. Locals say 기동카 (gi-dong-ka) for Climate Card, and the city’s own FAQ calls your pass 관광권 (tourist pass) or 단기권 (short term pass). If a station worker hears “gi-dong-ka”, they know exactly what you need.

The day starts at 4am, not when you tap. The official wording is “first train (04:00) on the start day to the last train on the end day”. Calendar days, not 24 hour blocks. Charge at 9pm and you’ve wasted a day.

Tourists vote with their feet. After the foreign card machines arrived, short pass charges roughly doubled year on year, from about 120,000 to 240,000, and the 3 day pass took 35% of sales, ahead of the 5 day at 24%, per the same Money Today report.

    Pick Your Version

    If It’s Your First Time

You will ride more than you think: palace in the morning, market at lunch, Hongdae at night. I’d buy a 5 day pass for a six or seven night trip, use T-money on arrival day, and ride the Airport Railroad (blue) home on your last pass day. Sort your e-Arrival Card before you fly so the airport part is fast, load the apps you need before you land, and use our first timer hub for the rest.

    If You’re Bringing Kids

Give every person their own card from day one, so nobody is stuck at the gate while you sort out a top up. The city says a youth 7 day pass costs 13,000 won instead of 20,000, but only after you register as a youth on the T-money website, so I’d budget the adult price. If a zoo day at Seoul Grand Park is on your list, remember it’s in Gwacheon now, outside the pass. Our Seoul with kids guide has the family routes.

    If You’re Travelling Solo

A pass suits you perfectly: go where you want, when you want, and every extra ride is free. I’d take the 3 day pass for a long weekend and ride buses as much as the subway, because you see the neighbourhoods. More ideas in our solo Seoul guide.

    Sunbae’s Picks

My pick for most visitors: the 5 day pass, charged the morning after you land. It fits a typical week and removes all fare maths.

If I only had a weekend: a 2 day pass at 8,000 won. Six rides and you are ahead, and you’ll do six by Saturday lunch.

My airport rule: T-money in, Climate Card out. Pay for the arrival ride, then time your last pass day so the all stop train to the airport is free.

I’d skip WOWPASS for transit alone. For pure riding, a Climate Card or T-money is simpler.

[AFFILIATE: Klook AREX (blue) Incheon Airport express ticket]

    Offers Worth Knowing

The transfer discount is the one most visitors never notice. Seoul cuts your fare when you transfer within 30 minutes (one hour between 9pm and 7am), but only on a transport card and only if you tap out when you leave the bus, per Visit Seoul’s transport page. It matters most on T-money, since pass rides are already unlimited.

Your other saving is simply buying the right length. A 7 day pass works out at under 3,000 won a day.

[AFFILIATE: Klook or Trazy WOWPASS pickup]

Where The Pass Works This Season

Most of what’s on this autumn sits inside the pass. The late October city plan is all Seoul, and the Haneul Park Silver Grass Festival is a Line 6 (brown) ride. Leaf peepers doing the Seoul foliage walks can stay on one pass for days. Need line colours at a glance? Use our subway map.

Day trips are T-money territory. Nami Island runs on lines outside Seoul, and Seoraksan is an intercity bus, so no pass covers them.

    What’s Changing Next

Seoul city buses are due to accept tapped Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay and JCB cards in 2027, with testing through the end of 2026, as The Korea Herald reported. Hana Card, the partner bank, has named January 2027 (in Korean), with Incheon buses, airport buses and the subway to follow later. For a trip between now and Christmas, you still need a card in your pocket.

    Word Of The Stop

충전 (chungjeon): to charge or top up. Point at your card, say “chungjeon” at a convenience store counter, and hand over cash. Every clerk in Seoul knows what you mean.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can Tourists Still Buy The Climate Card In Seoul?

Yes. The 30 day version ended on 1 October 2026, but the 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 day passes continue. Buy a 3,000 won card at a Line 1 to 8 station machine and charge the pass there.

Does The Climate Card Work At Incheon Airport?

Half of it. You can ride the all stop Airport Railroad (blue) from Seoul and get off at T1 or T2 on your pass, but you cannot board at the airport with it. Pay for your arrival ride on T-money.

Is The 1 Day Pass 24 Hours?

No. It runs from the first train on the day you charge it to the last train that night. Charge it in the morning.

Can I Pay With My Foreign Credit Card?

Yes, at the newer machines in Line 1 to 8 stations, which take foreign cards since March 2026 with a small fee. Keep 10,000 won cash as backup for T-money top ups.

Does The Pass Still Work In Gyeonggi Province?

No. Since 1 October 2026, the short passes cover Seoul only (plus the airport ride out). Gwacheon, Hanam, Goyang, Gimpo, Guri, Seongnam and Namyangju were dropped.

On 4 October 2026 I rechecked the shutdown dates, prices, card price, refund rule, the new 1 October coverage limits and the airport railroad rule against Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Climate Card pages, the foreign card machines against the city’s March announcement and Money Today, and the 2027 bus plan against The Korea Herald and Korean business press. Still unconfirmed: whether visiting teenagers can register for the youth price, the exact 2027 start date for bus card taps, and current card prices at NAMANE and Korea Tour Card kiosks.

  • What To Wear In Korea From October To December

What To Wear In Korea From October To December

Wear layers. In November, Seoul averages about 12°C in the afternoon and 3.5°C before dawn, so you want a warm jacket over a thin knit, a scarf, and thermals by late month. October still feels like spring (20°C highs), December is real winter (4°C highs, lows below zero). Layers let you strip off indoors, where Korea runs its heating hot.

Sunbae Says: Pack one warm outer layer and zero heavy jumpers. Koreans dress thin underneath and warm on top, because the subway, cafés and restaurants are toasty.

Picture it: you land at Incheon on a November evening and the air outside is a few degrees above freezing. Twenty minutes later you are on a heated train, sweating in the jumper you packed for the cold. Dress for both and you win.

The Numbers: Seoul Month By Month

These are the official 1991 to 2020 averages for Seoul from the Korea Meteorological Administration’s climate normals (in Korean).

Month Average high Average low Rain days Snow days
    October 20.2°C 10.6°C 4.8 0
    November 11.9°C 3.5°C 6.4 2.3
    December 4.2°C minus 3.4°C 4.2 6.4

The swing between dawn and afternoon is 8 to 10 degrees in every month. That single fact decides your packing: you will be cold at 8am and warm at 2pm on the same day.

Averages hide cold snaps. Seoul’s record lows are minus 11.9°C in November and minus 23.1°C in December; you won’t see those, but one sharp week is normal.

Now the 2026 reality. September was 1.2°C warmer than normal nationwide with only 17% of normal rain, Money Today reported from the KMA’s monthly review (in Korean). And the KMA’s medium range forecast (in Korean) issued on 4 Oct has Seoul at 25°C highs and 10 to 14°C lows from 8 to 12 Oct, before dipping to 21°C by 14 Oct.

Heads Up: If you land in the second week of October, do not pack only winter gear. Launch week is forecast at T shirt afternoons and jacket mornings, a 15 degree gap. Check the forecast three days before you fly and adjust.

What Koreans Actually Wear By Temperature

Korea has a habit English sites miss: the 기온별 옷차림 (gion byeol otchharim, “outfits by temperature”) chart, which people check before getting dressed. Here is the consensus, drawn from the common Korean chart on Namuwiki and E-Land’s seasonal style guide, mapped to when you will meet each band in Seoul.

Temperature What Koreans wear When you will meet it
20 to 22°C Thin cardigan, long sleeve shirt, jeans Mid October afternoons
17 to 19°C Light jacket or windbreaker, sweatshirt Late October afternoons
12 to 16°C Jacket, fleece, knit Early November afternoons, October nights
9 to 11°C Trench coat, layered tops, thermal leggings Mid November days
5 to 8°C Wool coat or leather jacket, scarf, thermals Late November, early December days
4°C and under Padded coat, gloves, scarf, thermals December, and any November morning cold snap

The chart’s smartest footnote: dress for the cold morning too, because the daily low hits around 4am.

Mid To Late October: Light Layers

October is easy: a long sleeve top, a light jacket and jeans. Evenings drop to around 10°C, so carry the jacket after dark. My Seoul in late October guide has what is on that fortnight, and the Seoul autumn foliage guide tells you when the leaves turn.

Heading to the mountains? Dress a level warmer: ridges on Seoraksan are far colder and windier than the city.

November: The Month Most People Underpack

November is the trap. The first week can feel like October; by the last, mornings sit near freezing and a couple of snow days are normal. My Korea in November guide walks you through the month week by week.

My November kit: a warm jacket or knee length padded coat, a thin knit, one thermal top, a scarf and closed shoes. Gloves join after mid month.

[SUNBAE STORY: the first properly cold November morning of a recent year, and what the subway platform looked like when everyone switched to long padding overnight]

    December: Proper Winter

December means a real winter coat. The long padded coat (Koreans call it 롱패딩, “long padding”) is the unofficial uniform on the street and the subway, and there is a reason: wind funnels between towers, and 6.4 snowy days a month on average means slush.

Add thermals under your jeans, an ear covering hat and touchscreen gloves for map checks. My Korea in December guide covers the rest of the month, and if you are hitting the slopes, see ski resorts near Seoul and bring your own base layers.

    Pick Your Outer Layer

Option Best For Cost Time My Take
Packable down jacket October to late November, carry on travellers Bring your own Zero My pick for most trips before December
Knee length padded coat Late November and December Bring or buy here An hour of shopping Essential from December, overkill in October
Buy everything on arrival Last minute packers Varies Half a day Fine for thermals and gloves, risky for a coat

My verdict: until late November, a packable down jacket plus a thermal top beats any coat, because it squashes into a day bag the second you walk into a heated café. After that, go long padding.

Shoes, Socks And The Indoor Rule

You will walk far more than you expect, much of it up subway stairs. Grippy sneakers beat fashion boots, and in December go water resistant.

Now the unwritten rule: socks matter. Floor seating restaurants, temples, guesthouses and every jjimjilbang mean shoes off, so holes will be seen. Slip ons save lacing at the door. My unwritten rules of Korea guide covers the rest of the shoes off etiquette.

Floors are often heated (ondol). After 24 winters here, my rule: the best outfit is one whose top layer comes off in two seconds.

Temples And Palaces: What To Wear

Temples. The official Templestay etiquette page asks for dress that is “clean, neat and conservative”: no sleeveless tops, mini skirts or short shorts, and bare feet are not allowed inside. In late autumn that mostly solves itself, because you will be in trousers anyway. For Jogyesa downtown, take Anguk Station (Line 3, orange) Exit 6 and walk about 10 minutes.

Staying overnight? Templestay’s FAQ says temples hand you a vest and trousers, but mountain mornings are cold, so bring a jacket and thick socks. My templestay guide has the full kit.

Palaces. No dress code at all. The deal is hanbok: Visit Seoul’s Gyeongbokgung page says a complete hanbok gets you in free, otherwise foreign adults aged 19 to 64 pay 3,000 won. In November and December it opens 9am to 5pm, last entry an hour before, closed Tuesdays. Take Gyeongbokgung Station (Line 3) Exit 5.

Heads Up: “Complete” is checked. Under the National Heritage Service standard reported by Asia Economy in May 2026 (in Korean), you need a jeogori (jacket) with a chima (skirt) or baji (trousers). A jeogori over your jeans, or a hanbok skirt with a T shirt, does not count.

Where To Buy Cheap Warm Layers In Seoul

Forgot something? Korea is the easiest place in the world to fix a packing mistake.

Option Best For Cost Time My Take
Convenience store Hot packs, a cheap scarf or gloves in a pinch Cheapest Five minutes Grab hot packs here, nothing else
Daiso Myeongdong Hot packs, socks, gloves, fleece bits Most items 1,000 to 5,000 won 45 minutes My pick for small warm stuff
GOTOMALL Knits, coats, scarves at underground mall prices Budget Two hours My pick for a coat or knitwear
Namdaemun Market Hats, gloves, thermals, outdoor gear Budget, haggle politely Two hours Best for a market morning plus shopping

Convenience stores. GS25, CU and 7 Eleven stock hot packs once it turns cold. The CU in Incheon Terminal 1 arrivals runs 24 hours.

Daiso Myeongdong. Twelve floors, a few minutes’ walk from Myeong-dong Station (Line 4, sky blue), open 10am to 10pm. Sources disagree on Exit 1 or 2, so check Naver Map for the exit.

GOTOMALL. The giant mall under Express Bus Terminal. Per GOTOMALL’s own access guide, use Exit 8-1 or 8-2 from Line 3 (orange), Exit 8 from Line 7 (olive), or Exit 8, 8-1 or 8-2 from Line 9 (gold). It runs 10am to 8pm every day of the year.

Namdaemun Market. Take Hoehyeon Station (Line 4) Exit 5; the Namdaemun Market Tourist Information Center is 80 m from the exit, open 10am to 7pm, with English help. Go in daylight; stall hours vary.

[SUNBAE FIELD TEST: check this season’s price of a single hot pack and a pair of thermal leggings at Daiso Myeongdong and one convenience store, and which Daiso floor stocks winter goods]

    Offers Worth Knowing

At participating tax free shops, foreign visitors get an immediate refund at the till on purchases from 15,000 won to under 1,000,000 won each, up to 5,000,000 won per trip, per Visit Seoul’s tax refund guide (see Resources). Bring your passport.

    What Locals Know

Koreans switch wardrobes in one weekend. When minimum temperatures fell into single digits on 19 October 2025, GS25 saw hot pack sales jump 587.3% on the week before and winter accessories 257.3%, per Digital Chosun (in Korean). One cold Sunday and the city is in padding by Monday.

Watch for “수능 한파”. Koreans joke that the national university entrance exam always brings the first real cold, the “Suneung cold snap”. This year’s exam is on 19 November, per the Ministry of Education notice (in Korean). Folklore, not a forecast, but carry your warm layer that week.

Thermals have Korean brand names. Uniqlo’s Heattech is the famous one, but Korean rivals have sold their own lines, such as Topten’s OnAir, SPAO’s Warmtech and BYC’s Bodyheat. Ask any clothing shop for 발열내의 (bareol naeui, heat generating underwear).

    Pick Your Version

    If It’s Your First Time

You will overpack. I’d bring one warm outer layer, three thin layers and comfy shoes, then buy anything missing on day two. Start with my first timer hub for the rest of your prep, and sort your transit card before you go shopping across town.

    If You’re Bringing Kids

Children lose gloves at a spectacular rate, so pack cheap spares and top up at Daiso. Zip layers they can remove themselves on the subway save meltdowns.

    If You’re Travelling Solo

You carry everything all day. I’d choose a packable down jacket and one pair of shoes that works for a palace at 9am and a bar at 11pm.

If You’re Here For A Reset

Bathhouses and temple stays mean shoes off and warm floors. Pack soft layers you can sit cross legged in. This is general information, not medical advice: if you have a heart condition or high blood pressure, check with your doctor before hot baths after a cold walk.

    Sunbae’s Picks

My one must pack item: a thin thermal top. It weighs nothing and turns a light jacket into a November jacket.

If I only had one coat for a mid November trip, I’d bring a knee length padded coat, not a wool one. It shrugs off drizzle and wind.

Worth It: a lightweight packable down jacket. It comes off in the café and back on at the bus stop.

Skip It: a thick wool jumper. You will sweat on the subway and have nowhere to put it.

[AFFILIATE: Klook or Agoda hotels in Myeongdong for easy shopping for layers]

Air Quality: Pack A Few Masks

Seoul runs a seasonal fine dust programme every December to March, because 91% of recent high concentration days fell in those months, per its clean air portal. Check AirKorea or your weather app before a long outdoor day, and buy KF94 masks at any pharmacy or convenience store. This is general information, not medical advice; if you have asthma, bring your usual medication.

    What’s Changing In 2026

Autumn is running warm. September 2026 was the sixth straight year of an above normal September, and the KMA’s late August three month outlook leaned warmer than normal through November, with a 60% chance of an above normal November in its Daejeon and Chungcheong breakdown, Newspim reported (in Korean). My read: October may feel like late summer, but warm autumns still bring sharp cold snaps. Pack the thermal anyway.

    A Quick Packing List

    • Warm jacket or padded coat (November and December)
    • Two or three thin knits or fleeces
    • One or two thermal tops and leggings (late November and December)
    • Scarf, beanie, touchscreen gloves
    • Grippy walking shoes, ideally slip on
    • Good socks, no holes
    • A few KF94 masks
    • Lip balm and hand cream for dry air

    Word Of The Stop

내복 (naebok): thermal underwear. Korean grandparents swear by it, and so do I. Ask for it in any clothing shop from November onward.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Is Korea Cold In November?

Cool to cold: 11.9°C by day and 3.5°C at night on average, with freezing mornings by late month. A warm jacket, a knit and a scarf cover most days.

What Should I Wear In Seoul In October?

Spring layers: highs average 20.2°C and lows 10.6°C, and the second week of October 2026 is forecast near 25°C. A long sleeve top and light jacket work.

Do I Need A Winter Coat In December?

Yes. December averages 4.2°C by day and minus 3.4°C at night, with snow on about six days. Bring an insulated coat, hat and gloves.

Can I Wear Shorts To Temples In Korea?

You won’t be turned away from the grounds, but Templestay etiquette asks you to skip short shorts, mini skirts and sleeveless tops, and never go barefoot inside.

Where Can I Buy Cheap Winter Clothes In Seoul?

Hot packs at convenience stores, small warm items at Daiso Myeongdong, and coats and knits at GOTOMALL (Express Bus Terminal, Exit 8) or Namdaemun Market (Hoehyeon Station, Exit 5).

    How I Checked This

On 4 October 2026 I rechecked Seoul’s averages against the KMA’s 1991 to 2020 normals, read that morning’s KMA medium range forecast and Korean reporting on September’s climate and the seasonal outlook, and verified exits and hours on GOTOMALL’s and Visit Seoul’s pages. Temple and palace rules come from Templestay, Visit Seoul and Korean reporting. I could not find the KMA’s October to December outlook, Daiso’s exit is unconfirmed, and nobody can forecast cold snaps, so check the KMA before you fly.

Seoul Fall Foliage 2026: Peak Dates And The Best Spots

Seoul’s fall foliage should peak between about 30 October and 4 November 2026. The Korea Forest Service expects ginkgo to peak nationally around 30 October and maples around 31 October, and forecaster Weatheri puts Bukhansan, Seoul’s big mountain, at peak on 4 November. Aim your trip at the last days of October and the first week of November.

Sunbae Says: Set an alarm for 10am Korea time exactly six days before your Secret Garden date. The online tickets go in seconds, and a weekday morning slot in the first week of November is the single best autumn hour in Seoul.

Picture it: you come up out of Anguk Station at 10am, the air is cold enough to see your breath, and ten minutes later you are standing by a royal pond ringed with red maples. Here is how to get that morning, plus free spots for the rest of your trip.

The 2026 Forecasts, Side By Side

Two forecasts matter. The Korea Forest Service publishes the government view, which Seoul Shinmun reported on 22 September (in Korean). Weatheri, a private forecaster, publishes the one VisitKorea shares with tourists. Both are still the current forecasts as of 4 October. Treat every date as expected, not guaranteed.

    Place Forecast peak Source
Seoraksan (Gangwon) 20 Oct Korea Forest Service
    Seoraksan (Gangwon) 25 Oct Weatheri
Ginkgo, national 30 Oct Korea Forest Service
Maple, national 31 Oct Korea Forest Service
Bukhansan (Seoul) 4 Nov (first colour 23 Oct) Weatheri
Naejangsan 4 Nov (Weatheri: 11 Nov) Korea Forest Service
Hallasan (Jeju) 6 Nov (Weatheri: 13 Nov) Korea Forest Service

The season has officially started. The Korea Meteorological Administration logged the first colour on Seoraksan on 28 September, four days earlier than last year (in Korean) and right on the 30 year average. Weatheri had expected 3 October, so the north is running slightly ahead of its forecast. Nothing yet suggests the Seoul dates will move, but I’ll be watching Bukhansan around 23 October.

Colour moves from the mountains down into the city, so Seoraksan blazes in the third week of October while downtown is still mostly green. For everything else on, check our events calendar.

    Which Week Should You Come?

Option Best For Cost Time My Take
20 to 26 Oct Seoraksan day trip, silver grass at Haneul Park Free to a bus fare Mountains first, city still green Great if you want mountains; too early for palaces
27 Oct to 2 Nov Ginkgo streets, Jeongdong Night Walk Mostly free Forecast ginkgo and maple peak My pick. The best odds of gold and red in the same trip
3 to 9 Nov Secret Garden maples, Bukhansan 8,000 won for the garden Forecast Bukhansan peak Close second; colder mornings, deeper reds
10 to 20 Nov Seoul Forest leaf carpets Free After peak A solid backup, but one windy day can strip the trees

    The Best Seoul Foliage Spots

    Changdeokgung Secret Garden (Huwon)

This is the one. The royal rear garden admits visitors in timed groups, so it never gets mobbed, and its ponds and pavilions sit inside old woodland.

Here is how it works in 2026. You enter at a set time with a guide, then you can stay with the tour or wander the open areas on your own, per the palace’s official FAQ (in Korean). Each session takes 100 people: 50 booked online, 50 sold at the palace from 9am. Online booking opens at 10am, six days ahead, first come first served. English entry times are 10:30, 11:30, 14:30 and 15:30 from March to November, and the garden ticket is 5,000 won for adults and 2,500 won for ages 7 to 18 on top of the 3,000 won palace ticket, according to Visit Seoul. In December the 15:30 English slot drops.

Heads Up: Your Secret Garden ticket is a live mobile ticket that activates shortly before your slot, and screenshots are refused at the gate. Unpaid online bookings also cancel themselves, so pay straight away.

Changdeokgung is closed on Mondays, and from November it runs 9am to 5:30pm, per the Royal Palaces and Tombs hours page (in Korean). Free hanbok entry covers the palace but not the garden.

Getting there: Anguk Station (Line 3, orange), Exit 3, about 360 m or a six minute walk to the main gate.

[SUNBAE FIELD TEST: on a late October weekday, what time the on site Secret Garden queue starts at the Changdeokgung ticket booth, and whether the morning English slots sell out by 9:30am]

[AFFILIATE: Agoda hotels in Jongno near Anguk Station]

    Gyeongbokgung Palace

The big palace does its colour in the quieter rear grounds, not the paved main courtyards. Adults pay 3,000 won and anyone under 19 or over 65 enters free. From November it opens 9am to 5pm (last entry 4pm), and it is closed on Tuesdays. Wear complete hanbok and you get in free, per Visit Seoul’s palace page.

Getting there: Gyeongbokgung Station (Line 3), Exit 5, about 490 m; or Gwanghwamun Station (Line 5, purple), Exit 2, about 470 m.

Heads Up: The palaces do not share a closing day. Changdeokgung and Deoksugung close on Mondays, Gyeongbokgung on Tuesdays. Plan your palace morning around that or you will be staring at a locked gate.

    Namsan North Loop Road

Locals call it 북측순환로, the north loop. Namsan has been closed to private cars since 2005, so its loop roads belong to walkers. The north side of the Namsan Dulle-gil runs 3.4 km, per Seoul’s parks office (in Korean), and Seoul’s own media channel has called it the mountain’s best foliage route. It starts beside the National Theater of Korea. Short on time? Visit Seoul’s 1.3 km Southern Walking Path leaves the same intersection toward Namsan Tunnel 3.

Getting there: Dongguk University Station (Line 3), Exit 6, then about 15 minutes uphill on foot to the National Theater; or ride the green Namsan circulation bus 01A or 01B from Chungmuro or Dongguk University Station.

    Seokchon Lake

A 2.5 km loop around two lakes with Lotte World Tower overhead. Allow 30 to 40 minutes. It is free and open 24 hours, which makes it a good evening walk after a day in Jamsil.

Getting there: Jamsil Station (Lines 2 and 8), Exit 2, about 280 m.

    Seoul Forest

About 600 ginkgo trees stand together here, so it reads as a golden block rather than a single street. Seoul’s Mediahub news service reported the fallen leaf carpet was still going on 27 November 2025, which makes this your late season backup. It is free and open around the clock.

Getting there: Seoul Forest Station (Suin Bundang Line), Exit 3 or 4, about 240 m; or Ttukseom Station (Line 2, green), Exit 8, about 540 m.

    Deoksugung Stonewall Walkway

The classic gold street: a palace wall, ginkgo and zelkova, and the old churches of Jeongdong. It is free, flat and best late in the afternoon. Our ginkgo walks guide covers it with Samcheong-dong and the 500 year old tree at Sungkyunkwan.

Getting there: City Hall Station (Lines 1 and 2), Exit 1, about 170 m.

    Bukhansan National Park

For hikers only. Weatheri puts the first colour here on 23 October and the peak on 4 November. Trails are rocky and steep, so wear real shoes and start early. The Ui LRT ends at Bukhansan Ui Station on the eastern side; check Naver Map for the exit to your trailhead and the Korea National Park Service site for trail notices.

    Worth It Or Skip It

Worth It: the Secret Garden in the first week of November. It costs 8,000 won all in and it is the best maple scene in the city. Close behind: Seokchon Lake at dusk, which costs nothing.

Skip It: the Gyeongbokgung main courtyard at noon on a weekend. It is paved, packed and nowhere near the trees. Head for the rear grounds or come on a weekday morning.

    Pick Your Version

    If It’s Your First Time

I’d do the Secret Garden in the morning and the Deoksugung Stonewall Walkway at dusk, and nothing else that day. Two great autumn scenes beat six rushed ones. If you land in late October, our Seoul in late October guide has what else is on.

    If You’re Bringing Kids

Seoul Forest and Seokchon Lake are your friends: flat paths, room to run, no tickets. I’d save the Secret Garden for kids who can handle a long walk on uneven paths, and let little ones kick through the ginkgo leaves at Seoul Forest instead.

    If You’re Travelling Solo

Go early and midweek. I’d be on the Namsan North Loop by 8am, then walk down for breakfast. Solo, you also have the best shot at an on site Secret Garden ticket, because one spare place is easier to grab than four.

If You’re Here For A Reset

The Namsan loop and Seokchon Lake are two of the calmest walks in the city this season. I’d walk one slowly every morning of your trip, phone in pocket.

    Sunbae’s Picks

My pick for the single best hour: the Secret Garden, 10:30 English entry, on a weekday in the first week of November. Follow the guide for the first stretch, then peel off and sit by the pond.

If I only had one evening, I’d walk Seokchon Lake at sunset with the tower lighting up overhead. Free, 40 minutes.

My late season backup: Seoul Forest. After 24 autumns here, it is where I send people who arrive after peak.

[AFFILIATE: Klook hanbok rental near Gyeongbokgung]

    Offers Worth Knowing

Complete hanbok gets you into Gyeongbokgung and the main Changdeokgung grounds free. Under 19s and over 65s enter Gyeongbokgung free. Seoul Forest, Seokchon Lake, Namsan and the Deoksugung walkway cost nothing. The Seoul Autumn Festa runs citywide until 29 November, with outdoor performances worth catching between walks. A short tourist transit pass covers every subway leg in this guide; our transit card guide explains which one to buy now that the 30 day card is gone.

    What Locals Know

Koreans chase the week before peak. The weather agency calls first colour when about 20% of a mountain has turned and peak at about 80%. Korean bloggers keep repeating that leaves, like flowers, look best just before full peak. So if your dates sit a few days early, relax.

Ginkgo goes fast. Seoul’s Mediahub notes that once a ginkgo starts dropping, it can be bare within days. Ginkgo makes up 34.7% of Seoul’s street trees, so when they turn the whole city goes yellow at once, then it is over. Do the gold streets the moment you see them.

The city publishes its own leaf map. Every autumn Seoul releases a list of foliage roads: 110 routes covering 167 km in 2025 (in Korean), each pinned on the Smart Seoul Map. The 2025 list came out on 29 October, so the 2026 edition will probably land late in the month. Locals use it to find the tree lined street two blocks from their hotel, and so can you.

    What’s Changing In 2026

Palace tickets go up in January. Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung have cost 3,000 won since 2005. The heritage service plans to announce new fees in November and apply them from 1 January 2027 (in Korean). Autumn 2026 is the last season at the old price.

More people under the same trees. Korea had a record 18.94 million foreign visitors in 2025, 8.2% above 2019, and the first half of 2026 ran 21% higher again. That is why the Secret Garden’s online tickets vanish in seconds. Book the moment the window opens, and do palaces on weekdays.

    Pair It With An Event

The Seoul Silver Grass Festival at Haneul Park runs 17 to 23 October, 10am to 9pm. Jeongdong Night Walk fills the streets beside Deoksugung’s ginkgo lined wall from 29 to 31 October, right at forecast ginkgo peak, with the official opening on the evening of 30 October. If you are staying into the next month, our Korea in November guide picks up from there.

Getting There: A Simple Two Day Foliage Plan

Day one, palaces and gold streets. Subway to Anguk Station (Line 3, orange), Exit 3, and walk six minutes to Changdeokgung for your Secret Garden slot. Lunch in Bukchon, then walk about 20 minutes west to Gyeongbokgung’s rear grounds (skip this on a Tuesday). Finish on the Deoksugung Stonewall Walkway at dusk, about a 25 minute walk south down Sejong-daero under more ginkgo.

Day two, parks and the lake. Seoul Forest in the morning from Seoul Forest Station, then ride to Jamsil (change to Line 2 (green) at Wangsimni) for a Seokchon Lake loop at sunset.

Rides cost from 1,550 won by card. Keep our Seoul subway map open, and load the navigation apps from our Korea travel apps guide before you land. Early November mornings are cold, so check our what to wear guide too.

    Frequently Asked Questions

When Is Peak Fall Foliage In Seoul In 2026?

Expected around 30 October to 4 November. The Korea Forest Service forecasts national ginkgo peak on 30 October and maple on 31 October; Weatheri forecasts Bukhansan at peak on 4 November. Weather can shift this by several days.

Has The 2026 Foliage Started Yet?

In the mountains, yes. Seoraksan showed its first colour on 28 September, four days earlier than 2025. Downtown Seoul usually turns from late October.

How Do I Book The Secret Garden?

Online at the Royal Palaces and Tombs site from 10am Korea time, six days before your visit, or at the palace ticket office from 9am on the day. Each session has 50 online and 50 on site places.

Is Seoul Still Colourful In Mid November?

Often, yes. Ginkgo leaves carpet the ground after peak, and Seoul Forest was still golden on 27 November 2025. Mountain maples fade first.

  • Seven Golden Ginkgo Walks In Seoul

Seven Golden Ginkgo Walks In Seoul

Seoul’s ginkgo trees turn gold from late October, and the Korea Forest Service expects the national ginkgo peak around 30 October 2026. Your best walks are the Deoksugung Stonewall Walkway, Samcheong-dong, the 500 year old tree at Sungkyunkwan, Seoul Forest’s grove, Olympic Park, Garosu-gil and Sejong-daero. All are free, and all are on the subway.

Sunbae Says: Walk on the leaves, never on the little orange berries. Squash one and your shoes will smell like old cheese for the rest of the day.

Here is your afternoon: you climb out of City Hall Station, turn the corner by the palace wall, and the whole street is yellow above you and under your feet. Office workers slow down to take the same photo you are taking. That is ginkgo week in Seoul.

    Why Seoul Goes Gold

The ginkgo has been Seoul’s official tree since 3 April 1971, picked because it is long lived and tough against city pollution and pests, according to the city’s own symbols page (in Korean). Newsis counted 102,070 ginkgo street trees in October 2025, so in the right week whole avenues glow.

Timing, 2026: the Forest Service forecasts the national ginkgo peak on 30 October and maples on 31 October (forecasts, not promises), as Kyunghyang Shinmun reported (in Korean). Downtown Seoul usually holds its colour into the first week of November, and the fallen leaves keep the streets gold for a while after that. For the maples, see my Seoul fall foliage 2026 guide.

    Which Walk Should You Do?

Option Best For Cost Time My Take
Sejong-daero into Deoksugung First timers, dusk photos Free About 1 hour My pick. Central, flat, palace wall and old churches.
Munmyo tree at Sungkyunkwan Early risers, one perfect tree Free 45 min plus the walk in The most moving single tree in the city.
Seoul Forest grove Families, late arrivals after peak Free 1 to 2 hours The best backup if you land in mid November.
Olympic Park Long walkers, joggers Free 2 hours plus Big skies, but it is a trek from downtown.

If you only have one afternoon, do the downtown loop. If you have a spare morning, add Sungkyunkwan at opening time.

    1. Deoksugung Stonewall Walkway And Jeongdong-gil

The classic. The stone wall of Deoksugung Palace, lined with ginkgo and zelkova, runs into Jeongdong-gil and its old churches and embassies. Seoul’s list of autumn foliage roads (in Korean) gives the palace road at 0.3 km and Jeongdong-gil at 0.5 km, so this is a short stroll you can stretch with a coffee.

Timing bonus: Jeongdong Night Walk runs on 30 and 31 October 2026, with warm up events on the 29th and an opening concert at 7pm on the 30th. Historic buildings open late, court music plays and buskers line the wall, right on forecast peak. It is on my events calendar.

Getting there: City Hall Station (Lines 1 dark blue and 2 green), Exit 1, 168 m, per Visit Seoul.

Heads Up: Jeongdong Night Walk packs the narrow wall path on 30 and 31 Oct evenings. Walk it in daylight first for photos, then come back for the night programme.

    2. Samcheong-dong-gil

A 1.2 km road of ginkgo and zelkova along the side of Gyeongbokgung, with galleries and cafés on the other side. Pair it with a palace visit or a wander into Bukchon.

Getting there: Anguk Station (Line 3, orange), Exit 2, about 780 m, roughly 10 minutes on foot, per Visit Seoul.

Heads Up: Gyeongbokgung is closed on Tuesdays. The street stays open, but if you planned the palace plus Samcheong-dong combo, pick another day.

    3. The Munmyo Ginkgo At Sungkyunkwan

One tree, and it is the reason to come. The ginkgo in front of Myeongnyundang hall at the old Confucian academy is Natural Monument No. 59, as VisitKorea notes. It was planted in 1519 and stands about 21 m tall.

Fun detail: it is a male tree, which means no smelly berries underneath. Entry is free. Korean travel sites list the grounds as open 9am to 6pm to the end of October and 9am to 5pm from November, but I could not confirm this officially, so check at the gate.

Getting there: Hyehwa Station (Line 4, sky blue), Exit 4, then about 1.2 km on foot through the university area.

[SUNBAE FIELD TEST: check the Myeongnyundang gate opening time and how busy the tree is at 9am on a weekday in peak week]

    4. Seoul Forest Ginkgo Grove

About 600 ginkgo trees stand close together here. Seoul’s Mediahub news service (in Korean) described a golden carpet of leaves on 27 November 2025, a full four weeks after the national peak. That makes this your best bet if you arrive late.

Getting there: Seoul Forest Station (Suin-Bundang Line, yellow), Exits 3 to 5, under five minutes; or Ttukseom Station (Line 2, green), Exit 8, 10 to 15 minutes. Mediahub lists buses 141, 145, 148, 2014 and 2413.

    5. Olympic Park, Wiryeseong-gil

The longest walk on this list. Seoul’s autumn road list gives the Olympic Park ginkgo route on Wiryeseong-gil at 2.7 km. Add a loop of the park itself, which is free and open to walkers from 5am to 10pm.

Getting there: Olympic Park Station (Lines 5 purple and 9 gold), Exit 4, then about 1.1 km, per Visit Seoul.

    6. Garosu-gil, Sinsa-dong

The name literally means “tree lined street”, and those trees are ginkgo on both sides. It is short and more about boutiques and cafés than nature.

Getting there: Sinsa Station (Line 3 orange and Shinbundang Line red), Exit 8, 454 m.

    7. Sejong-daero

Right in the middle of the city, Seoul lists 0.9 km of ginkgo and other trees on Sejong-daero. Walk it from Gwanghwamun Square south towards City Hall and you land at walk number one. Together they make a compact downtown ginkgo loop.

Getting there: Gwanghwamun Station (Line 5, purple), then walk south. My subway map shows how Lines 1, 2 and 5 connect here.

    Worth It Or Skip It

Worth It: the Munmyo ginkgo at Sungkyunkwan. It is free, rarely as busy as the palaces, and standing under a tree planted in 1519 is humbling.

Skip It: Garosu-gil if you only have one afternoon. It is a lovely shopping street, but for pure gold, Seoul Forest and Deoksugung give you far more trees per step.

    What Locals Know

Koreans track the leaves by street, not by forest. The city publishes its list of foliage roads every autumn, and its 2025 list ran to 110 roads. When Seoulites say “단풍 보러 가자” (let’s go see the leaves), it can just as easily mean a downtown street at lunchtime as a mountain.

The smell is a city service problem, and the city treats it like one. From 1 September, Seoul and its districts send ginkgo fruit teams out with lift trucks, excavator mounted shakers and nets to strip seeds before they drop, Newsis reported (in Korean). In 2025 they targeted 23,116 female trees, about 22.6% of the total.

Male trees are the quiet upgrade. Districts swap female trees for males after complaints. The Korea Economic Daily reports (in Korean) that Gangbuk District replaced 1,053 roadside female ginkgos in 2020 and 2021 and odour complaints fell from 93 to zero. That is why some streets smell and the next one over does not.

    Pick Your Version

    If It’s Your First Time

Do the downtown loop: Sejong-daero into the Deoksugung Stonewall Walkway. It is flat, central and on Lines 1 (dark blue), 2 (green) and 5 (purple), and you see a palace wall, old churches and the gold in an hour. I’d time it for late afternoon, when the light goes warm. Peak week is also Halloween week, so read my Halloween in Seoul guide before you plan your evenings.

    If You’re Bringing Kids

Seoul Forest and Olympic Park give children space to run and leaf piles to jump in, well away from traffic. I’d skip the narrow pavements of Samcheong-dong with a pushchair on a weekend. My Seoul with kids guide has more family stops.

    If You’re Travelling Solo

Be at Sungkyunkwan when the gates open and you may have the Munmyo tree almost to yourself. I’d then walk down through the university area for breakfast. More solo routes are in my solo Seoul guide.

If You’re Here For A Reset

A slow morning loop in Seoul Forest, before the families arrive, is the gentlest reset I know in this city in autumn. Leave the headphones in your bag and listen to the leaves under your feet.

    Sunbae’s Picks

My pick for one perfect hour: the Munmyo ginkgo at opening time on a weekday, then coffee nearby.

If I only had one evening, I’d walk Sejong-daero into the Deoksugung Stonewall Walkway at dusk, and on 30 or 31 October stay for Jeongdong Night Walk.

I’d skip Garosu-gil for leaves and go for the shopping only, if at all.

My after peak rule: after 24 autumns here, I head for Seoul Forest once the streets start to bare. The grove holds its carpet longest.

    Offers Worth Knowing

Everything on this list is free: public streets, free parks and free entry to the Sungkyunkwan grounds. Jeongdong Night Walk is free to walk around. If you add a palace, Gyeongbokgung is free when you wear complete hanbok, which makes the Samcheong-dong walk next door a natural pairing.

[AFFILIATE: Klook hanbok rental near Gyeongbokgung for Samcheong-dong photos]

    A One Day Ginkgo Route

Start at Hyehwa Station (Line 4, sky blue) for the Munmyo tree when the gates open. Take a taxi across to Anguk, about 10 minutes, and walk Samcheong-dong-gil down past Gyeongbokgung. Continue south along Sejong-daero, then finish on the Deoksugung Stonewall Walkway at dusk. On 30 or 31 October, stay on for Jeongdong Night Walk. Save Seoul Forest for another morning.

Every leg is inside Seoul, so a 1 to 7 day tourist pass covers the subway parts; my transit card guide explains which one fits, and my travel apps guide covers the map apps that show live exits. Dress for a cold start with my what to wear guide.

    About That Smell

Ginkgo is beautiful and it stinks. Only female trees produce the fleshy seeds, and when they drop and split they release a sour smell from butyric acid that Koreans complain about every autumn. You will still meet the odd squashed patch, so watch your step and keep leaves, not seeds, under your shoes.

    What’s Changing In 2026

The smelly trees are slowly disappearing. Female ginkgo street trees fell from 28,216 in 2021 (27.1% of the total) to 22,982 in 2025 (23.1%), and 10 of Seoul’s 25 districts, including Gangnam, Gwangjin, Yongsan and Dobong, plan to replace 792 ginkgo trees this year, according to the Korea Economic Daily. My read: the famous smell is fading street by street, but the gold is not going anywhere, because male trees turn just as yellow.

Experts are pushing back a little. The same report quotes specialists who want replacement decisions to weigh tree health, foot traffic and maintenance cost, not complaints alone. Expect the pace of swaps to stay gradual.

    Word Of The Stop

은행나무 (eunhaeng namu): ginkgo tree. Here is the joke every Korean kid knows: 은행 (eunhaeng) also means “bank”. So the ginkgo is, word for word, the bank tree. Different Chinese characters, same sound.

    Frequently Asked Questions

When Do Ginkgo Trees Turn Yellow In Seoul?

From late October. The Korea Forest Service expects the national ginkgo peak around 30 October 2026, and downtown Seoul usually stays gold into early November, with fallen leaves lasting longer.

Where Is The Most Famous Ginkgo Tree In Seoul?

The Munmyo ginkgo at Sungkyunkwan, Natural Monument No. 59, planted in 1519. It stands in front of Myeongnyundang hall and entry is free.

    Why Do Ginkgo Trees Smell?

Only female trees produce seeds with a fleshy outer layer, and that layer smells sour when crushed. Seoul removes seeds from September and is replacing some female trees, but step around any you see.

Where Can I Still See Ginkgo In Mid November?

Seoul Forest. Its grove of about 600 trees still had a golden carpet on 27 November 2025.

    Are Seoul’s Ginkgo Walks Free?

Yes. Every walk here is on public streets or in free parks. The only paid option nearby is a palace ticket, and Gyeongbokgung is free in complete hanbok.

    How I Checked This

On 5 October 2026 I rechecked walk lengths on Seoul’s foliage road list, the city tree on the symbols page, the 2026 forecast in Kyunghyang Shinmun, Jeongdong Night Walk on the Seoul festival portal and in Herald Business, exits on Visit Seoul and Seoul Mediahub, and the tree counts in Newsis and the Korea Economic Daily. Still unconfirmed: the Sungkyunkwan grounds hours, Seoul’s 2026 foliage road list and 2026 harvesting figures. Peak dates are forecasts.

  • Nami Island In Autumn: Is It Still Worth It?

Nami Island In Autumn: Is It Still Worth It?

Yes, if you go on a weekday and catch an early ferry. Nami Island’s official autumn season runs from mid October to early December, and its ginkgo lane is at its best around mid November. Adult entry, including the return ferry, is 19,000 won. On a weekend at midday it is a queue with leaves; skip that version.

Sunbae Says: From 18 September to 22 November 2026 the first ferry leaves at 7:30am every day. Be on it. The first hour on the island is quiet, and the shuttle bus from Seoul does not land until 11:30am.

Imagine two versions of your day. In one, you step off a 7:30am ferry into cold, still air, and the Metasequoia Lane is empty except for a gardener with a rake. In the other, you reach the wharf at noon on a Saturday and stand in a ticket line behind three tour buses. Same island, same leaves. This guide gets you the first version.

    When The Colour Comes

Nami Island publishes its own autumn foliage calendar. Katsura and maple trees start turning in mid October. The ginkgo trees go yellow in late October, a stage the island calls short but the most stunning. By mid November the fallen ginkgo leaves cover the Ginkgo Tree Lane, which is the shot everyone wants. The island calls the full season mid October to early December and posts live colour updates on its social channels.

That is a longer window than Seoul’s. If you miss peak in the city (the Korea Forest Service forecasts ginkgo around 30 October and maples around 31 October nationally; see my Seoul fall foliage forecast), Nami gives you a second chance.

    2026 Prices And Ferry Times

The ticket is styled as a “visa” to the island’s playful micro nation, Naminara Republic, and it includes entry plus the return ferry. These are the island’s published prices.

Ticket Round trip ferry Motorboat in, ferry out
    Regular 19,000 won 29,000 won
Discount (seniors 70 plus, middle and high school students) 16,000 won 26,000 won
Special (36 months to elementary school age) 13,000 won 23,000 won

The ferry takes about five minutes. On the official ferry timetable (in Korean), boats normally run every 30 minutes from 8am to 9am, every 10 to 20 minutes from 9am to 6pm, then every 30 minutes to 9pm, with the last boat back at 9:05pm. For autumn 2026 (18 September to 22 November) the first ferry is at 7:30am every day, and the last runs at 9:30pm on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The motorboat runs 9am to 6pm and leaves once two people are aboard.

    Getting There From Seoul

The island sits on the river border: its address is in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, but you catch the ferry from Gapyeongnaru wharf on the Gapyeong side, as VisitKorea’s Nami Island page explains. The island’s own How To Get There page lists four ways in.

Option Best For Cost Time My Take
ITX-Cheongchun train First timers, couples Reserved seat fare; check Korail+ 42 min from Cheongnyangni, 60 min from Yongsan My pick. Fast, a seat, and you choose your ferry.
Gyeongchun Line (teal green) Budget travellers Metro fare by distance on T-money 50 min from Sangbong Cheap and no booking, but no reserved seats.
Direct shuttle bus Families with small kids Check the operator 9am Hongdae to 11:30am island Easy, but you arrive with the crowd.
Self drive Groups with a car Parking 6,000 won for 12 hours Traffic dependent Skip on autumn weekends.

By train. The ITX-Cheongchun runs from Yongsan (on the Gyeongui-Jungang Line, teal) and Cheongnyangni to Gapyeong Station with reserved seats, so book in the Korail+ app on autumn weekends. The Gyeongchun Line (teal green) commuter train runs from Sangbong, which connects with Line 7 (olive), in about 50 minutes. From Gapyeong Station the wharf is about 1.5 km: a 20 minute walk, or about 5 minutes on bus 10-4 or by taxi.

By shuttle bus. The island lists a daily round trip shuttle run by Ktourstory: it leaves Hongik University Station (Line 2, green) Exit 4 at 9am, stops at Myeongdong and DDP, reaches Nami at 11:30am and leaves the island at 4:30pm. Pets are not allowed.

[AFFILIATE: Klook or Trazy Nami Island shuttle bus from Seoul]

Heads Up: The short term Climate Card tourist pass does not cover Gapyeong, which is outside Seoul. Pay with T-money or a train ticket. My transit card guide explains the limits.

Is It Worth It? My Verdict

Nami’s fame comes from the Korean drama Winter Sonata, and for two decades it has been on every first timer’s list. That is the problem: everyone goes, and most go on the same Saturday.

Worth It: a weekday between late October and mid November, on the first ferry, with a plan to walk the far side of the island while the tour groups crowd the entrance.

Skip It: a weekend day trip at midday if you only have four or five days in Korea. You will spend three hours in transit and queues to see trees that Seoul also has. The Munmyo ginkgo at Sungkyunkwan and Seoul Forest’s grove are a subway ride away and free.

Also consider: if you want mountains rather than a tidy island park, Seoraksan is the bigger autumn trip, with a forecast peak around 20 October.

Heads Up: On autumn weekends the return ferry line builds from mid afternoon, just as the 4:30pm shuttle loads. Head back to the wharf by 2pm, or stay for the evening and catch a late boat.

    What Locals Know

You will hear a dozen languages. The island says it welcomes more than 1 million foreign visitors a year from about 170 countries, Cheonji Ilbo reported (in Korean) in September 2026. So the crowd is not just Korean families, and the day trip buses from Seoul land from late morning.

Lose something? It goes to LOST112. The same report says staff make multilingual announcements and register found items on Korea’s national lost property portal, LOST112, with passports put first. Note your ferry time and the spot where you last had it.

Rain does not stop the boats. The island’s own notice says ferries run normally in the rain. A drizzly weekday in early November is the local cheat code: wet leaves glow, and the crowds stay home.

    Pick Your Version

    If It’s Your First Time

I’d take the ITX-Cheongchun, not a tour bus, so you control your timing. Leave Seoul early, be on the 7:30am or 8am ferry, and be back in the city for dinner. Still deciding what fits your trip? Start with my first timer hub.

    If You’re Bringing Kids

Nami works well with children: open lawns, a short boat ride, and under 36 months enter free. I’d take the shuttle bus with small kids, even though it means arriving with the crowd, because door to door beats juggling a taxi transfer with a pushchair. My Seoul with kids guide has more family day plans.

    If You’re Travelling Solo

Solo, you are fast and flexible, so use it. I’d ride the ITX-Cheongchun, take the first ferry, walk the full riverside loop before 10am, then head back while everyone else is arriving. More ideas in my solo Seoul guide.

    Sunbae’s Picks

My pick for the best day: a Tuesday to Thursday in the first half of November, first ferry, Ginkgo Tree Lane before 9am.

If I only had one morning, I’d walk the Metasequoia Lane first, then the Ginkgo Tree Lane, then leave. The rest is pleasant but not why you came.

I’d skip the motorboat unless you have kids who will love it. It costs 10,000 won more than the ferry to save a five minute crossing.

My weekend rule: after 24 autumns here, if your only free day is a Saturday, I’d stay in Seoul and do the ginkgo streets instead.

[SUNBAE FIELD TEST: time the ticket and ferry queue at Gapyeongnaru at 7:30am versus 11am on a November weekday]

    Offers Worth Knowing

Children under 36 months go free, and groups of 20 or more get 10% off the total. The island’s price table also lists early bird tickets (bought before 8am for the 8am ferry) and evening tickets (bought after 6:31pm from April to November) under its discounted rates, without publishing the amounts; ask at the booth which rate applies, especially while the 7:30am autumn ferry runs. Parking is 6,000 won for 12 hours, or 5,500 won through Kakao T.

    What’s Changing In 2026

More visitors are leaving Seoul. In the first half of 2026, foreign arrivals through regional airports rose 42.5%, against 18.2% at the capital’s main airports, and the tourism ministry says more travellers are heading beyond the capital, per Korea JoongAng Daily. My read: classic day trips like Nami will be busier this autumn than in any year you have read about, so the early ferry matters more than ever.

Stricter rules on room prices. Since 4 August 2026, homestays and traditional guesthouses that overcharge or hide their rates face a five day suspension on a first violation, as The Korea Times reported. If you stay over in Gapyeong on a foliage weekend, the posted rate is the rate.

    An Easy Autumn Day Plan

Take an early ITX-Cheongchun from Cheongnyangni to Gapyeong. Taxi to Gapyeongnaru and be on the 7:30am or 8am ferry. Walk the Metasequoia Lane and the Ginkgo Tree Lane first, while the light is low and the paths are empty. Break for lunch on the island. Head back by early afternoon, before the return queues build, and be in Seoul for dinner. Naver Map shows live train and bus times; my travel apps guide shows how to set it up in English.

Dress warmly: it is a river island and the wind across the water is sharper than downtown Seoul. My what to wear guide has the month by month layers.

Bonus: Jarasum Jazz Before The Leaves

If you are in Korea right now, the 23rd Jarasum Jazz Festival runs on Jarasum Island in Gapyeong from 9 to 11 October 2026, with official shuttles from the Seoul area and a free shuttle around town. It is before peak colour, but it is a great reason to be in Gapyeong. The rest of the month is on my events calendar and in my Seoul in late October guide.

    Word Of The Stop

나루 (naru): ferry landing. It is the “naru” in Gapyeongnaru, the wharf where you board. You will spot it in old place names all over Seoul too, a memory of the days when people crossed the Han River by boat.

On 5 October 2026 I rechecked prices, discounts, the autumn calendar, the 2026 ferry timetable and transport options on Nami Island’s English and Korean pages, the location on VisitKorea, the Jarasum Jazz Festival site, Korean news on foreign visitors and lost property, and the trend figures in Korea JoongAng Daily and The Korea Times. Still unconfirmed: the early bird and evening ticket amounts, the shuttle fare and current ITX-Cheongchun fares.
