Seoraksan In Autumn: A Day Trip Or Overnight From Seoul

Seoraksan’s 2026 autumn colour has started: the weather service logged first foliage on 28 September, and the Korea Forest Service forecasts the peak around 20 October. You can do it as a day trip from Seoul, with about 2 hours 20 minutes on the express bus to Sokcho plus a local bus to the park gate. My advice for you is one night in Sokcho.

Sunbae Says: Go on a weekday between 19 and 23 October and be at the park gate before 9am. Same leaves, a fraction of the queue.

Picture it: you step off the local bus at Seorak-dong at 8:30am, the ridges are red and gold, and the car parks are half empty.

    When The Colour Actually Peaks

The news since late September is good. The Korea Meteorological Administration confirmed first foliage on Seoraksan on 28 September 2026, four days earlier than 2025 and right on the long term average. A cold snap at the start of October was expected to push the colour along.

For the peak, you will see two dates, and both are right. The Korea Forest Service forecasts 20 October (in Korean), counting peak as about 50 percent of leaves turned. The weather service counts peak at 80 percent; its average peak date is 17 October, and last year it landed on 24 October, as Kyunghyang reported (in Korean). Put them together and your sweet spot is roughly 17 to 25 October.

The ridges turn first and the valleys follow, so early November can still bring colour near Sinheungsa. After mid November, skip Seoraksan and stay in the city for the ginkgo in my Seoul fall foliage 2026 guide, or chase the colour south with my Korea in November guide.

You can check the live picture yourself: the weather service posts foliage photos for 21 mountains on its seasonal flowers and foliage page (in Korean).

Heads Up: 9 October (Hangul Day) is a Friday this year, so 9 to 11 October is a long weekend, and 17 to 18 and 24 to 25 October are the peak weekends. Morning buses to Sokcho sell out on those dates, and the roads into the park jam by mid morning.

    Pick Your Day

20 October 2026 is a Tuesday, which is good news for you. Here is how the options stack up.

Option Best For Crowds My Take
Long weekend, 9 to 11 Oct Only free dates you have Heavy Early colour on the ridges only; go if you must
Weekend, 17 to 18 Oct Weekend only travellers Very heavy Good colour, worst queues of the year
Weekday, 19 to 23 Oct Anyone flexible Moderate My pick: peak colour, sane queues
Weekend, 24 to 25 Oct Late arrivals Very heavy Valleys still lovely, ridges fading

My late October Seoul guide shows what fits around a midweek mountain run, and the What’s On calendar has every festival that week.

    Getting There

You have two Seoul terminals, and both work.

Dong Seoul Bus Terminal sits right outside Gangbyeon Station, Line 2 (green), Exit 4 (in Korean). Express buses leave from the second floor and intercity buses from the first. Public timetable data lists around 40 intercity departures a day to Sokcho, from about 2 hours 10 minutes, with a standard fare of 17,300 won.

Seoul Express Bus Terminal is at Express Bus Terminal Station (Lines 3, 7 and 9); follow the signs for the Gyeongbu and Yeongdong building and check Naver Map for the nearest exit. Timetable data shows 35 departures a day to Sokcho Express Bus Terminal, 06:30 to 22:40, about 2 hours 20 minutes, at 15,600 won standard, 20,300 won for an 우등 (udeung, wide seat) and 26,300 won premium.

Option Best For Cost One Way Time My Take
Seoul Express Bus Terminal South of the river stays, Gangnam 15,600 to 26,300 won About 2h 20m My pick: cheapest, lands at the terminal bus 7 passes
Dong Seoul Bus Terminal Hongdae, Seongsu, east Seoul From 17,300 won About 2h 10m and up Most departures; great backup when the other sells out
Organised day tour No planning at all Varies by operator Coach from central Seoul Fine, but you arrive with every other coach

Book express buses on KOBUS and intercity buses on T-money Bus as soon as you know your date. My tourist transit card guide explains which card to tap on the subway.

Step by step, from central Seoul:

    1. Subway to Express Bus Terminal Station or Gangbyeon Station. Allow 30 to 45 minutes.
    2. Bus to Sokcho, about 2 hours 10 to 2 hours 30 minutes, 15,600 won and up.
    3. Local bus 7 or 7-1 (18 and 19 runs a day) from the stop by Sokcho Express Bus Terminal to the last stop, 설악산 소공원 (Sogongwon). The fare is 1,530 won by card or 1,700 won cash, about 30 to 40 minutes.
    4. Walk into the park. Entry is free.

Crowds And Traffic In Peak Week

This part is now confirmed. Sokcho’s special traffic plan runs from 3 October to 8 November 2026 (in Korean), mainly on weekends and public holidays. When the main Sogongwon car park fills, cars are turned back to car parks B and C in Seorak-dong, which are free, with free shuttle buses up to the park. Over on the Osaek side, Yangyang County is doubling fines for illegal parking (in Korean).

That tells you everything: do not drive.

After 24 autumns here, my rule: the mountain is the same at 8am on a Wednesday as at 11am on a Saturday. Only one is fun.

[SUNBAE FIELD TEST: ride bus 7 from Sokcho Express Bus Terminal on a peak weekday morning and note the departure time, the ride time and how full it gets]

    Which Walk To Choose

Entry to Seoraksan National Park is free, and the Korea National Park Service (in Korean) has park, course and closure information. Sinheungsa temple’s heritage fee, once charged at the gate, was dropped in May 2023.

Walk Best For Distance Time My Take
Biseondae Everyone About 6.8 km return About 2h 30m My pick for first timers: big colour, flat path
Ulsanbawi Fit walkers 3.8 km each way, 808 stairs 4 to 5 hours The one you brag about; start by 9am
Heullimgol Keen hikers 6.2 km one way 3.5 to 4 hours Gorgeous, but now booking only
Daecheongbong Experienced hikers Summit at 1,708 m Full day or more Skip unless you have the gear and the legs

Biseondae is a mostly flat valley walk along Cheonbuldong from Sogongwon. Ulsanbawi climbs to a granite ridge at 873 m, passing Heundeulbawi, the famous rocking boulder, and Gyejoam, a tiny hermitage under a rock overhang. Do not start it after lunch in late October; the light goes early.

Heullimgol is on the Osaek side in Yangyang, a different trailhead from Sogongwon. For October and November it runs on a timed reservation system capped at 5,000 people a day (in Korean), booked online by 2pm the day before. Entry is 8am to 3pm in October and 9am to 2pm in November.

The Cable Car: Worth It Or Skip It?

The Seorak Cable Car (in Korean) goes up to Gwongeumseong in about 10 minutes. It is round trip only: 16,000 won for adults, 12,000 won for children, free under 36 months. The senior discount does not apply from 19 September to 15 November 2026, which is the whole foliage season.

The catch: tickets are sold on the day, at the station, only, and each prints an assigned boarding time that can be hours away in peak week. Miss it and rebooking costs a 20 percent fee. Hours change daily with the wind, so check the operator’s homepage the morning you go. From the top station, allow another 15 to 20 minutes over rock to the viewpoint.

Heads Up: Buy your cable car ticket first thing, then walk to Sinheungsa while you wait. Queue at 11am on a peak weekend and you may get an afternoon slot with little time at the top.

Worth It if you are travelling with grandparents or small kids and you are at the ticket window as it opens. Skip It if you are fit and it is a peak weekend: walk to Biseondae instead and you will see more colour for free.

    Behind The Scenes

“첫 단풍” is a precise measurement, not a vibe. When Korean news says first foliage, it means the weather service has seen about 20 percent of the mountain coloured from the summit down. Peak means 80 percent on that scale. So when a Korean blog says “단풍 절정” in mid October and another says late October, they are often using different agencies’ definitions, not disagreeing.

Koreans plan around the car parks, not the leaves. The October chatter is about which lot fills first and when the shuttle starts, which is why the official plan centres on car parks B and C. On the bus, you sidestep the whole fight.

Sokcho has two terminals. Tickets say 속초고속버스터미널 (express) or 속초시외버스터미널 (intercity), and they are different buildings. Buses 7 and 7-1 stop at the express one, so landing there means no transfer.

    Pick Your Version

    If It’s Your First Time

Stay one night. I’d take an afternoon bus from Seoul, eat by Sokcho harbour, sleep early, and ride the first local bus to Seorak-dong. Buy a cable car ticket, walk Biseondae while you wait, then ride up. If you are still sorting your arrival paperwork, do your e-Arrival Card before you fly, not on the bus.

    If You’re Travelling Solo

One seat is easier to find than two on a busy bus. I’d do Ulsanbawi on a weekday, start by 8am, and tell someone at your guesthouse which trail you are on. My solo Seoul in autumn guide covers the rest of your week.

If You’re Here For A Reset

Make the walk the point, not the summit. Biseondae is a long, gentle valley stroll beside clear water, and Sinheungsa is a working temple where you can sit quietly for a while. Back in Seoul, sore legs are exactly what a jjimjilbang is for.

    Sunbae’s Picks

My pick for your one mountain day: Biseondae on a Tuesday or Wednesday between 19 and 23 October. It is the best colour for the least effort.

If I only had one morning here, I’d be on the first local bus, buy a cable car ticket on arrival, and walk to Heundeulbawi while my slot comes up. Rock, temple, valley and ridge views in one morning.

If Seoraksan sells out on you, stay in Seoul and do the Haneul Park silver grass festival instead. Different plant, same golden light, subway fare only.

[SUNBAE STORY: a general memory of a quiet weekday morning on the Biseondae path versus a packed weekend at Sogongwon]

    Offers Worth Knowing

Park entry and the walk past Sinheungsa are free, and so are car parks B and C and their shuttles during the traffic plan. Under 36 months ride the cable car free; children pay 12,000 won.

    What’s Changing In 2026

Heullimgol now needs a booking. Until 30 September you could just walk in. From 1 October it is timed reservations only, 5,000 a day, through 30 November. If it is on your list, book the moment your date is fixed.

An early start, a slightly later peak. First foliage came four days earlier than in 2025, yet the Forest Service puts the peak about 0.8 days later than the five year average. My read: the classic “go in mid October” advice lands a touch early, so aim for 18 to 23 October.

The road to the gate is being widened. The 1.6 km stretch from Cheongbong Bridge to Sogongwon is being widened from 8 m to 12 m, with completion targeted for June 2027. Expect roadworks on top of foliage traffic this year, one more reason to leave the car.

Heads Up: Last year the high trails toward Daecheongbong closed from 15 November to 15 December (in Korean) for wildfire season, while Biseondae and Ulsanbawi stayed open, and fines for sneaking in ran 200,000 to 500,000 won. Expect a similar closure in mid November 2026 and check the park service before any late season hike.

[AFFILIATE: Agoda hotels in Sokcho and Seorak-dong]

    Pack For The Ridge

Bring layers: the ridges are much colder than Seoul, and the rocks near Gwongeumseong want proper shoes. My full packing list is in the what to wear in autumn and winter guide.

    Word Of The Stop

단풍 (danpung): autumn leaves, the red and gold kind. You will see 단풍 on every bus poster in October. “첫 단풍” (cheot danpung) is first foliage, and “단풍 절정” (danpung jeoljeong) means peak foliage.

    How I Checked This

On 4 October 2026 I rechecked the first foliage date against the weather service announcement (via the Korea Times, SBS and Kyunghyang), the Forest Service forecast, Heullimgol’s rules on the park reservation site, the cable car operator’s page, and the 2026 traffic plan in Korean regional news. Bus timetables and fares come from public timetable data, because KOBUS and T-money Bus did not load for me; confirm when you book. Cable car daily hours, shuttle intervals and the 2026 wildfire season closure dates were not yet published.

  • Seoul Silver Grass Festival At Haneul Park

Seoul Silver Grass Festival At Haneul Park

The 25th Seoul Silver Grass Festival runs from Saturday 17 to Friday 23 October 2026 at Haneul Park in World Cup Park, 10am to 9pm, and entry is free. Take Line 6 to World Cup Stadium Station, then climb the 291 Haneul Stairs or ride the Maengkkong electric car (2,000 won one way). Get to the top about an hour before sunset, then stay for the lights.

Sunbae Says: Walk up, decide on the way down. The electric car’s last run in October is 7pm, so if you stay for the night lights, you are walking down. Charge your phone for the torch.

Picture it. You reach the top around 5pm, the grass catches the low sun and turns silver, then gold, the city skyline sits on the horizon, and you have a hot can of coffee from a convenience store warming your hands. Total cost: a subway fare.

    What The Festival Is

Haneul Park (하늘공원, “Sky Park”) is a hilltop meadow about 98 m above sea level, covered in silver grass (억새, eulalia). Each October the city turns it into a week long festival. The Seoul Metropolitan Government’s official notice (in Korean) confirms the 2026 dates, 17 to 23 October, 10:00 to 21:00, and the theme “억새, 자연이 건네는 위로”: roughly “silver grass, the comfort nature offers”.

That is Saturday to Friday, so you get exactly one weekend. The city’s festival programme page lists an opening ceremony with a lighting show and performances, hands on crafts such as making a silver grass bouquet, photo and wish zones, busking on a central stage, and an upcycling market (“리본 마켓”) selling plants in recycled pots and grass products. Evening lighting is billed as the signature: the city calls it one of Seoul’s flagship night festivals.

The 2026 night schedule was still not published when I checked on 4 October. For reference, last year’s festival (in Korean) ran media facades, landscape lighting and gobo projections from 7pm to 8:30pm every night, and the opening ceremony was at 6pm on day one. The festival also sits in my What’s On calendar with everything else that week.

    The Story Under Your Feet

This is my favourite Seoul fact to tell visitors. The hill you are standing on is rubbish. The Visit Seoul page for Haneul Park says Nanjido took the city’s waste for 15 years, from 1978 to 1993, until it became a 98 m mountain of trash. It was capped, planted and reopened as World Cup Park in 2002. Seoul reinvents itself faster than any city I know.

    Getting There

From central Seoul, this is a simple subway trip. From Hongik University Station, take Line 2 (green) one stop to Hapjeong, change to Line 6 (brown) and ride three stops (Mangwon, Mapo-gu Office, World Cup Stadium). Allow about 15 minutes on the train and 1,550 won on a transport card, the base fare since a June 2025 fare rise (in Korean). If you have not sorted a card yet, my guide to which transit card tourists need covers it.

    1. Exit World Cup Stadium Station (Line 6) at Exit 1. Visit Seoul puts the park about 1.6 km from this exit.
    2. Walk past the stadium toward World Cup-ro, cross into Peace Park (평화의공원) and follow the signs for 하늘공원 to the foot of the hill. Mapo-gu Office Station on Line 6 also works; check Naver Map for the best exit from there.
    3. Choose your way up (table below). The city’s own estimate is about 40 minutes on foot from either station to the top.

Set your map app to “하늘공원” and walking mode. My Korea travel apps guide explains why Naver Map or KakaoMap beats Google Maps here.

    Three Ways Up The Hill

Option Best For Cost Time My Take
Haneul Stairs (하늘계단, 291 steps) Anyone with working legs Free 10 to 20 minutes My pick. Faster than the car queue at sunset.
Maengkkong electric car (맹꽁이 전기차) from Nanjicheon Park car park Kids, grandparents, sore knees 2,000 won one way, 3,000 won return; ages 4 to 12: 1,500 / 2,200 won About 10 minutes plus the queue Worth it going up with family; useless after 7pm.
Zigzag path (희망의 숲길) Buggies, wheelchairs, slow strollers Free 20 to 30 minutes The only sane option with a pram.

Seoul Parks lists the electric car at every 10 to 20 minutes, running until 7pm in October and November, on a 3.8 km return loop between Nanjicheon Park and the top. Small dogs under 40 cm at the shoulder can ride if you hold them; big dogs cannot. Korean travel sites say senior and disability discounts are sold only at the on site booth, so carry ID.

Heads Up: The electric car stops at 7pm but the lights only start around 7pm. Plenty of people ride up at 6pm, stay for the show, then discover there is no ride down. Plan to walk down in the dark on the zigzag path or the stairs, and wear shoes with grip.

    Driving And Parking

Don’t. The city’s notice says traffic around the park gets very congested during the festival and asks everyone to use public transport. If you must drive, the official lots are Peace Park (1,162 spaces), Nanjicheon Park (438), Noeul Park (162) and a few smaller ones. Normal rates are 150 won per 5 minutes, but on festival and football days Seoul Parks switches to a flat event rate of 5,000 won per car for up to 4 hours. Charges apply 9am to 10pm.

Heads Up: If FC Seoul has a home game at World Cup Stadium on festival weekend, the stadium crowd and the festival crowd share the same lots, the same station and the same exit. Check the fixture list before you pick your day.

    When To Go

On normal days Haneul Park opens 6am to 7pm in October and 6:30am to 7pm in November (the park closes at night to protect wildlife). During festival week the event runs 10am to 9pm, so the hilltop stays lit later than usual.

Sunset in Seoul that week falls at roughly 5:45 to 5:55pm and gets a few minutes earlier each day. Check your weather app that morning and be at the top by 4:45pm.

    Which Day And Time

Option Best For Crowd Level My Take
Weekday, 4:30pm to 8:30pm Golden hour plus the full light show Busy but fine My pick, every time.
Weekday morning, 8am to 10am Quiet walk, photographers, a reset Light Best grass light without people; no festival stalls yet.
Sat 17 or Sun 18 Oct, afternoon Opening buzz, busking, stalls Very heavy Only if the weekend is all you have.
After the festival, late Oct to Nov Fewer people, grass still standing Light The grass peaks around now anyway. Lights gone, peace returns.

Worth It: a Tuesday or Wednesday at golden hour, with a hot drink in your pocket and the lights to follow.

Skip It: Saturday 3pm. You will spend it photographing the backs of strangers’ heads, then queuing for the car.

[SUNBAE FIELD TEST: how long the electric car queue is at 5pm on a festival weekday versus the weekend, and how long the stairs take at a normal pace]

    What Locals Know

Koreans know the difference between 억새 and 갈대. Silver grass (억새) grows on dry hillsides; reeds (갈대) grow by water. Korean blogs and news headlines about Haneul Park always say 억새, and locals will gently correct you if you call it reeds. More on that in Word Of The Stop.

The Korean internet treats this as a sunset event. Local blogs repeat the same advice: the grass shows its real colour at 노을 (sunset glow), weekday evenings beat weekends, and during the festival the electric car queue gets long enough that you should be ready to take the 291 stairs instead.

Weekends start at the car park. Korean visitor reviews describe the crowd building in the parking lots before you even see the grass. On the subway, you skip the worst of it.

The busking is on a schedule. Last year the city’s Seoul Mediahub report (in Korean) listed central stage busking from 3pm to 4:30pm on Saturday and 2pm to 5:30pm on other days. If you want music with your grass, aim for mid afternoon, then stay through sunset.

    Pick Your Version

    If It’s Your First Time

Make it your easy evening after a heavy palace day: stairs up at 4:45pm, sunset, the first lights, then two stops on Line 6 to Mangwon for dinner. If you are in town that week, my late October Seoul guide shows how this fits with your other days.

    If You’re Bringing Kids

Ride the electric car up, enjoy the crafts and photo zones in the afternoon, and be back on the car before its last run at 7pm. The stairs are steep for little legs and the zigzag path is slow in the dark. The flat lawns of Peace Park below are where they can run. My Seoul with kids guide has more outings that cost almost nothing.

    If You’re Travelling Solo

One of the best solo evenings in Seoul: free, safe, full of people doing exactly what you are doing, with a direct subway home. Go on a weekday, take the stairs, and give yourself an hour at the top. My solo in Seoul guide has more ideas for that week.

If You’re Here For A Reset

Go early. The park opens at 6am in October, the hill is nearly empty, and walking slowly through tall grass while the mist burns off is about as calming as Seoul gets. The city’s Seoul Wellness Travel Week starts on 29 October in Gangnam, a week after the festival, if you want more of that.

    Sunbae’s Picks

My pick for the festival: Tuesday 20 or Wednesday 21 October, stairs up at 4:45pm, stay until the lights, walk down.

If I only had one evening in Seoul that week, I’d do this over a rooftop bar. The view is better and it is free.

I’d skip the electric car at sunset unless you have kids or grandparents. You will be at the top before your turn comes.

I’d save ginkgo for later in the season. Come back in November and my ginkgo walks guide takes over where the grass leaves off.

[SUNBAE STORY: a memory of the hill at golden hour across your 24 autumns here, such as the first time you saw the grass light up, or how the old landfill looked before it became a park]

    Offers Worth Knowing

The festival and the park are free. The stairs and the zigzag path cost nothing; only the electric car charges, and children aged 4 to 12 pay 1,500 won one way instead of 2,000 won.

    What’s Changing In 2026

The grass may stay up all winter again. For 23 years the grass was cut in November after the festival. Last winter, for the first time, the city left about 94,000 square metres uncut (in Korean) as shelter and food for wintering birds, including kestrels and sparrowhawks, cutting it between March and May instead. The Korea Herald reported it gave the hill a completely different winter look. As of 4 October the city has not said whether it will repeat this for winter 2026 to 2027, though its notice talks about managing the grass this way going forward. If it does, December gets a second, quieter season on this hill.

A 25 year fixture. This is the 25th edition, which tells you it is part of the Seoul calendar, not a one off. My read: weekday evenings stay manageable, while Saturday 17 October, opening day, will be the busiest single day of the week.

    Make An Afternoon Of It

Pair the hill with the rest of World Cup Park. Peace Park and the lower parks along the Nanjicheon stream are flat and good for kids who need to run. Then take Line 6 (brown) two stops to Mangwon (for Mangwon Market) or three to Hapjeong for dinner. If Halloween weekend is also on your list, my Halloween in Seoul guide covers that weekend.

[AFFILIATE: Agoda hotels near Hongdae and Mangwon]

Wear layers and proper shoes. The hilltop is exposed and the wind picks up after dark; my what to wear guide has the list. For more autumn colour, see my Seoul fall foliage 2026 guide.

Heads Up: The park normally closes at 7pm in October and shuts at night to protect wildlife, so when the festival wraps at 9pm, head down with the crowd rather than lingering on a dark hilltop.

    Word Of The Stop

억새 (eoksae): silver grass, also called eulalia. Not to be confused with 갈대 (galdae), reeds, which grow by water. Use the right word and a Korean friend will be impressed.

    Frequently Asked Questions

When Is The Seoul Silver Grass Festival 2026?

Saturday 17 to Friday 23 October 2026, 10am to 9pm daily, at Haneul Park in World Cup Park. Entry is free.

How Do I Get To Haneul Park?

Line 6 to World Cup Stadium Station, Exit 1, then about 1.6 km on foot to the foot of the hill through Peace Park. Climb the 291 Haneul Stairs, take the zigzag path, or ride the Maengkkong electric car from the Nanjicheon Park car park.

How Much Is The Haneul Park Electric Car?

2,000 won one way or 3,000 won return for adults, and 1,500 or 2,200 won for children aged 4 to 12. It runs until 7pm in October and November, every 10 to 20 minutes.

Is There A Light Show At Night?

Yes, evening lighting is the festival’s signature. The 2026 times were not published on 4 October; last year the media art ran from 7pm to 8:30pm nightly.

Can I See Silver Grass After The Festival?

Yes, through late October and November. Last winter the city kept it standing into spring for migratory birds; check whether that repeats this year.

    How I Checked This

On 4 October 2026 I re-checked the festival dates, hours, theme and transport advice against the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s notice and the city festival page, and the park hours, electric car fares and hours, and parking rates against Seoul Parks and VisitKorea, then read Korean news and visitor blogs for crowd patterns. Still unconfirmed: the 2026 lighting show and opening ceremony times, whether the grass stays up this winter, and the 291 step count, which comes from Korean travel sites rather than an official page. Sunset times are calculated estimates; check your weather app.

Busan Fireworks Festival 2026: Where To Watch Without Losing Your Mind

The 21st Busan Fireworks Festival is on Saturday 7 November 2026 over Gwangan Bridge at Gwangalli Beach, with Igidae and Dongbaekseom as extra viewing areas. Watching from the beach is free. Paid seats cost 100,000 won (R, table and chair) or 70,000 won (S, chair only), on sale until 6 November. Last year about 1.17 million people came, so plan your exit before your spot.

Sunbae Says: Pick your spot by where you will sleep, not where the view is best. Being able to walk home afterwards beats any angle.

Imagine the moment the show ends. You are on the sand at Gwangalli, it is cold and dark, and a million people stand up at the same time. If your bed is a 15 minute walk away, you smile. If it is across the city, you queue. Everything below is built around that moment.

    The Key Facts

The official festival site lists Saturday 7 November 2026 at Gwangalli Beach, Igidae and the Dongbaekseom area, with international sales through NOL World from 4 September at 2pm to 6 November at 5pm. On 5 October the official programme page was still empty, but the organiser was already tendering for lighting, sound and generators, so the build is on.

NOL World’s festival guide, the official international seller, lists the event from 6pm to 9pm with the main fireworks from around 7:30pm and seat entry from 3pm to 5:55pm. For comparison, last year’s show on 15 November 2025 (in Korean) ran its fireworks from 7pm to 8pm in three parts: a special show set to G-Dragon’s music, an international segment and the Busan multi fireworks finale, with roughly 80,000 to 90,000 shells. Confirm the 2026 times on the official site in the final week. The date is on my What’s On calendar.

Where Should You Watch? Your Options

Option Best For Cost Time My Take
R seat, Gwangalli Families, couples 100,000 won Enter 3pm to 5:55pm Worth it with small kids. Table, chair, centre view.
S seat, Gwangalli Anyone who hates camping out 70,000 won Same My pick if you can still get one.
Free sand or Millak Waterfront Park Solo, budget, early risers Free Claim a spot 10am to noon Same sky, paid for in hours.
Dongbaekseom or Igidae Photographers, Haeundae hotels Free Arrive mid afternoon Side on angle, more room.
Yacht cruise Splurgers About 100,000 to 200,000 won per person this year Evening Fun, but fireworks week prices are steep.

If S seats are gone, go free at Millak or Igidae and stay walkable to your bed.

Paid Seats: Worth It Or Skip It?

Paid seats sit on the sand in the centre of the beach.

According to Seoul Shinmun’s report on the 2026 sale (in Korean), early bird tickets went on sale on 26 August and sold out in about a minute. Korean buyers use NOL Ticket, the Busan Bank app or Busan Bank branches (S seats only in branch), with a limit of four tickets per person. Busan residents get 10 percent off for the first time this year. Newspim reports (in Korean) that blocks sold through overseas travel agencies ran out early and that the city expects more Chinese tour groups under the visa free scheme. International visitors buy on NOL World.

[AFFILIATE: NOL World Busan Fireworks Festival seat tickets]

Worth It for families with small kids, anyone who hates standing for hours, and couples who want a guaranteed view without camping out from late morning. Skip It if you are solo on a budget and happy to arrive early; the free spots see the same sky.

    Free Viewing: The Real Options

Gwangalli Beach (free sections). The classic view, straight at the bridge. You pay in time instead of money. NOL World suggests arriving between 10am and noon to claim a mat spot on the sand, which matches what I would tell you for a Saturday.

Millak Waterfront Park. At the far end of the beach, next to the Millak fish market, with tiered steps down to the water. It is the closest point on land to the bridge. Popular, so the same early rule applies.

Dongbaekseom, Haeundae. One of the official viewing areas, on the Haeundae side. The angle is side on, which photographers like, and it pairs well with a Haeundae hotel.

Igidae. The other official area, across the bay on the Nam-gu side. Cliff paths and a wider view of the whole show.

Hwangnyeongsan. A hillside viewpoint that officials counted in last year’s crowd figures. A high view over the whole bay, but getting down afterwards in the dark takes patience.

    Getting There From Seoul

Take the KTX to Busan Station. Since KTX and SRT merged on 1 September 2026, the standard Seoul to Busan fare dropped from 59,800 won to 54,400 won (in Korean), and both services are booked in one app, Korail+. The trip takes about two and a half hours. Book early for Friday 6 and Saturday 7 November; fireworks weekend trains fill up.

From Busan Station, take Busan Metro Line 1 (orange) to Seomyeon and change to Line 2 (green) for the beach, about 35 minutes in normal conditions. On festival day, budget far more time than any app suggests. My travel apps guide shows how to set up Naver Map for Busan’s live train times.

    Subway Stations And Exits

Two Line 2 (green) stations serve Gwangalli. Travel guides give these exits; Busan Metro may close or reroute exits on the night, so follow staff and check Naver Map:

    • Geumnyeonsan Station, Exit 1: about a 7 minute walk to the beach.
    • Gwangan Station, Exit 3 or 5: about a 12 minute walk to the beach.

Last year Busan Metro sent extra trains to crowded Line 2 stations and warned trains could skip stops if crowding became unsafe. Have a backup: walk to a station further along Line 2, or wait it out in a café. Leaving an hour after the show is often calmer than leaving the minute it ends.

Heads Up: Trains may skip Geumnyeonsan or Gwangan after the show if platforms get dangerously full, as Busan Metro warned last year. Do not plan a tight connection to a late KTX that night.

[SUNBAE FIELD TEST: how long the queue into Geumnyeonsan and Gwangan stations actually runs from 8pm to 10pm on fireworks night]

    Crowd Safety

Busan takes this seriously. According to Yonhap’s report on the 2025 festival (in Korean), the city deployed about 7,000 police, firefighters, officials and volunteers, set up 42 priority crowd zones and limited entry where it got dense, while Busan Metro added about 200 extra runs on Lines 1 to 3. Gwangan Bridge’s upper deck closed from 3:30pm and the lower deck from 6:30pm, with road closures around the beach from 10am.

Your part is simple. Follow staff instructions, keep to the walking direction you are given, and do not push into a space that is already full. If a crowd feels tight around you, move sideways and out, not forward. Agree a meeting point with your group in case your phones lose signal. The same rules I give for Halloween night in Seoul apply here.

    What Locals Know

Busan hotels can charge what they like that night, and many do. Kookje Shinmun found (in Korean) a three star Gwangalli hotel listing 750,000 won for festival night against a usual 140,000 won, about five times its normal rate. Busan ran a fair price campaign with the culture ministry on 22 September, but a city official admitted it has no legal tool to cap room rates.

The room war started straight after Chuseok. Daum’s report on Busan’s “room war” found fireworks view rooms in Gwangalli at about 900,000 won against normal weekend rates of 240,000 to 300,000 won, and yacht tours at 100,000 to 200,000 won per person against a usual 20,000 to 30,000 won. If you have not booked yet, Seomyeon is the calmer base: ride in on Line 2 (green).

Koreans search “명당”, and so should you. The word means the best spot, and Korean posts about 불꽃축제 명당 are where the newest viewing tips appear. Look for photos taken at last year’s show, then check the angle on Naver Map’s street view.

Heads Up: Book a refundable room direct with the hotel and screenshot the confirmation. This June, during a BTS concert, some Busan hotels cancelled existing bookings to resell rooms at higher prices, Kookje reports.

    Pick Your Version

    If It’s Your First Time

Book two nights in Busan, not one. Arrive Friday, walk Gwangalli that evening so you know the layout, and on Saturday choose an S seat or a free spot near your hotel. My first timer hub covers the entry paperwork, including the e-Arrival Card, before you even get to Busan.

    If You’re Bringing Kids

I’d buy seats. A table, a chair and a known spot are worth 70,000 to 100,000 won when the alternative is eight hours on the sand with a tired five year old. Bring a waterproof mat anyway for the afternoon. If Busan is one stop on a longer trip, my Seoul with kids guide covers the rest.

    If You’re Travelling Solo

Go free and go early. One person fits into gaps on the sand that a family cannot, and you can move to Millak or Igidae if the beach is full. Keep your phone charged and your hotel close. My solo in Seoul guide is the natural companion if you are coming down from the capital.

    Sunbae’s Picks

My pick for most of you: a hotel walkable to Gwangalli or Millak, a free spot claimed by lunchtime, and no subway at all afterwards.

If I were watching with a camera, I’d go to Dongbaekseom or Igidae for the side on angle and the extra space.

I’d skip Hwangnyeongsan unless you are confident walking down a dark hill in a crowd.

I’d skip rushing for the subway at 8pm. Find a café or a restaurant table, eat, and let the first wave clear. You trade a crush on the platform for a hot meal.

    Offers Worth Knowing

Watching from the free sections costs nothing. The KTX fare cut from 1 September 2026 saves you 5,400 won each way on a standard Seoul to Busan seat, and both KTX and former SRT trains show up in one Korail+ search. The 10 percent seat discount is for Busan residents only, so do not plan around it.

    What’s Changing In 2026

Cheaper, simpler trains. The KTX and SRT merger is the biggest change for you: one app, a lower fare, and trains from both Seoul Station and Suseo in the same search. My read: fireworks weekend trains will still sell out, but you have more departures to choose from.

More of you are travelling beyond Seoul. In the first half of 2026, arrivals through airports other than Incheon and Gimpo rose 42.5 percent, against 18.2 percent at the two capital airports. Busan’s Gimhae is one of those regional airports. Add 1.17 million people at last year’s show and you can see why Gwangalli rooms go early.

[AFFILIATE: Agoda hotels in Gwangalli, Suyeong and Seomyeon]

    What To Bring

A waterproof picnic mat, a warm layer or two (the beach is cold after dark in November), snacks, water and a charged power bank. My what to wear guide has the full autumn layering list. Toilets near the beach get long queues, so plan around that. If you are building a longer trip, my Korea in November guide shows what else is on that month.

    Word Of The Stop

명당 (myeongdang): the best spot. Originally a feng shui term for an auspicious site, now used for the perfect viewing place at anything from fireworks to a concert. “불꽃축제 명당” is what every Korean is searching for this month.

  • Halloween In Seoul 2026: Theme Parks, Parties And Staying Safe

Halloween In Seoul 2026: Theme Parks, Parties And Staying Safe

Halloween in Seoul 2026 falls on Saturday 31 October. The easiest way for you to enjoy it is at a theme park: Lotte World runs its Halloween season until 15 November and Everland until 22 November. Hongdae and Itaewon draw huge crowds on the night itself, under heavy police crowd control. Since the 2022 Itaewon crowd crush, safety comes first here, and it should for you too.

Sunbae Says: Do your costume night at a theme park, then have a normal dinner in a quieter neighbourhood. You get all the fun and none of the crush.

    First, Some Context

On the night of 29 October 2022, 159 people died in a crowd crush in a narrow, sloping alley beside the Hamilton Hotel in Itaewon. Many were young people out for Halloween, and 21 foreign nationals were among those who died. In 2025 the government held its first official memorial, and the prime minister said the tragedy came from the government’s failure in safety management. In 2026 a special commission also recognised a local merchant and two firefighters who helped that night and later died, bringing the official victim count to 162.

This year is the fourth anniversary. Bereaved families and civic groups have declared October a month of remembrance (in Korean), with a memorial march on 24 October and a ceremony at 10:29am on 29 October at Gwanghwamun North Plaza. Families of foreign victims are flying in for it.

You do not need to avoid Halloween. You do need to understand why the barriers, one way walking routes and skipped stations exist, and follow them without argument. The alley itself is now marked as the Path of Memory and Safety. Walk through quietly if you pass; it is not a photo stop.

    Pick Your Halloween

Option Best For Cost Time My Take
Lotte World Adventure First timers, families, rainy nights 55,000 to 67,000 won adult Half a day, on the subway My top pick. Indoors, central, and the 8:20pm parade is the payoff.
Everland Horror fans, teens, a full day out About 46,000 to 68,000 won adult, by date Full day, 1 to 1.5 hours each way Worth the trip if zombies are your thing. Not for small kids after 4pm.
Hongdae streets Costume spotting, solo night owls Free 7pm to 9pm Go early, leave early. After 10pm it is a slow shuffle.
Itaewon People who know the area Free Early evening only I’d skip it on the 31st. Respectful, crowded, and heavily managed.

If I had one night, I’d take Lotte World on Friday 30 October and keep Saturday calm.

    The Theme Parks: Worth It

This is where Halloween in Korea is done best.

    Lotte World Adventure (Jamsil)

The 2026 autumn festival is called “Invitation to a Strange World” (기묘한 세계의 초대), a dark fantasy theme running 12 September to 15 November (in Korean). The night parade, Dark Fantasy Festival, starts at 8:20pm. The big news this year is a Junji Ito collaboration from 19 September (in Korean), billed as the first time the horror manga artist’s world has been built into a theme park, with Tomie and Souichi photo zones, themed food and limited merch.

A 1 Day ticket is 67,000 won for adults, 58,000 for teens and 50,000 for children. The After 4 ticket, entering from 4pm, is 55,000, 47,000 and 39,000 won. Most of the park is indoors, so rain cannot ruin your evening.

[SUNBAE FIELD TEST: where to stand for the 8:20pm parade on a Friday in late October, and how early the good spots fill]

Heads Up: After 4 tickets are the obvious Halloween hack, so the park fills up again in the evening on Fridays and weekends. Buy in advance and get there around 4pm, not 7pm, if you want rides as well as the parade.

    Everland (Yongin)

Korea’s biggest theme park runs Blood City Zero: Hell Gate from 12 September to 22 November (in Korean, Everland’s official blog), daily from 4pm to 9pm. It is an immersive zombie show across five zones, directed with filmmaker Lee Seok-hoon, and it is free with your park ticket. Blood City turns 10 this year. A separate horror maze costs extra and is booked in the Everland app.

By day it is a different park. The Wild Savannah Expedition walking safari runs through late November at no extra charge, and the Smiley Pumpkin Parade runs daily. Everland uses date based pricing; Korean ticket guides list adult day tickets from about 46,000 to 68,000 won depending on the date, so check the calendar before you go.

[AFFILIATE: Klook Everland ticket with shuttle from Seoul]

Which park suits you better is a longer conversation, and I cover it in Lotte World vs Everland.

    Getting There

Lotte World. Take Line 2 (green) or Line 8 to Jamsil Station. Exit 4 connects directly to Lotte World, and the park is joined to the Line 2 station underground. Line 2 runs there from City Hall with no transfer, for the 1,550 won base fare by card. Not sure which card to tap? My transit card guide sorts it out.

Everland. You have two routes. The red express bus 5002 runs from the Gangnam Station area (Sinnonhyeon, Gangnam and Yangjae stops) to Everland, and Gyeonggi express seat bus fares rose to 3,200 won by card in October 2025. Several queues share the Gangnam stop, so check Naver Map for the exact 5002 stand. The rail option is the Suin Bundang Line to Giheung, then the EverLine to Jeondae Everland Station; take Exit 3 for the free park shuttle. Allow 90 minutes or more either way. I’d take the 5002: one seat, no transfers.

Hongdae. Hongik University Station (Line 2, AREX (blue), Gyeongui Jungang Line). Check Naver Map for the exit nearest where you are headed; the main exits jam first.

Itaewon. Itaewon Station is on Line 6 (brown). Know your backups before you go: Noksapyeong and Hangangjin, one stop either side, also on Line 6.

    Where People Party

On Halloween night the crowds go to Hongdae, Itaewon, Gangnam and Seongsu. The numbers are big. Kyunghyang Shinmun reported (in Korean) that on Friday 31 October 2025 about 110,000 people were in the Hongdae area by 10pm. In Itaewon, around 14,000 to 16,000 gathered near the station, police restricted access to the alley beside the Hamilton Hotel from 10:20pm, and trains skipped Itaewon Station from 11pm, with people sent to Noksapyeong or Hangangjin instead.

Heads Up: If Itaewon Station is set to “non stop” (무정차 통과), your train will roll straight through. Walk to Noksapyeong or Hangangjin, about one stop each way, and expect that walk to be slow too.

Skip It: the main Itaewon strip and Hongdae’s busiest streets from 10pm to midnight on 31 October if you do not love crowds. It is loud, slow and mostly queues. Worth It: an earlier evening, or a ticketed venue where door staff control numbers for you.

How To Stay Safe In A Crowd

After two decades of DJing in Seoul’s clubs, my rules are short.

    1. Check crowd levels before you go. Seoul City’s Real-time City Data site (in Korean) shows live congestion for 50 of the city’s busiest spots. The colour scale is easy to read even without Korean.
    2. Keep right. Barriers and loudspeakers keep everyone walking on the right. Go with it.
    3. Never enter a sloping or narrow alley that is already full. If you cannot see the ground in front of you, you are too late.
    4. Know your exit and a second station. If your station is skipped, walk to the next one.
    5. If it gets tight, move sideways, not forward, keep your arms up in front of your chest and stay on your feet.
    6. Save the numbers: 112 for police, 119 for fire and ambulance, and 1330 for the Korea Travel Helpline, free and in English around the clock.

Heads Up: Your phone may buzz with a loud Korean emergency text on Halloween night. It is a crowd alert, not a drill to ignore. Paste it into Papago or your camera translate and follow it.

    What Locals Know

The city plans for this like a festival with no organiser. Last year Seoul ran a priority safety period from 24 October to 2 November (in Korean) across 14 busy areas, with joint command posts, crowd sensing CCTV, more than 200 barriers and over 600 safety staff in Hongdae alone. Itaewon had a plan to split entrances and exits and stop trains once congestion hit alert level. The 2026 plan usually lands in the week before Halloween.

The police side is just as big. In 2025 about 4,900 officers and 443 live CCTV cameras (in Korean) covered eight hotspots, from Itaewon and Hongdae to Seongsu cafe streets, Ikseon-dong and Apgujeong Rodeo. If you are standing still on a busy street, someone in a fluorescent vest will ask you to keep moving.

Korean feeds call it 핼러윈 (haelleowin), and the tone has changed. Many Korean twenty somethings now do their costumes at theme parks, house parties or ticketed club nights rather than out on the street. Follow their lead.

    Pick Your Version

    If It’s Your First Time

Make Halloween one fun evening, not the whole weekend. I’d do Lotte World on Friday 30 October for the 8:20pm parade, then spend Saturday somewhere calm. My first timer hub and Seoul in late October guide will fill the rest of your week, and my Korea travel apps guide gets Naver Map and Papago set up before you land.

    If You’re Bringing Kids

The theme parks are the whole answer. Lotte World is mostly indoors and right on the subway. Everland is bigger and further, so do the safari and parade by day and leave Blood City zones before 4pm if your kids scare easily. Keep the evening streets of Hongdae and Itaewon off the plan. My Seoul with kids guide has more family days.

    If You’re Travelling Solo

You will want to see the costumes, and that is fine. Go around 7pm to 9pm, when it is busy but moving, and leave before the late crush. Tell someone where you are, keep your phone charged, and know your second station. My solo in Seoul guide has safer nights out for the rest of your trip.

    Sunbae’s Picks

My pick for Halloween weekend: Lotte World on the Friday with an After 4 ticket, then a quiet Saturday dinner in Seochon or Mangwon, away from the party strips.

If I only had one Halloween evening, I’d do Everland: safari in the afternoon, Blood City from 4pm, and the bus back to Seoul before the streets fill.

I’d skip Itaewon’s main strip after 10pm on 31 October. Not because it is forbidden, but because you will spend the night in a slow queue behind barriers, in a neighbourhood that is also remembering.

I’d dress for a long cold evening. Late October nights get chilly, and costumes are thin. My autumn packing guide has the layers.

[SUNBAE STORY: a short, general memory of how Halloween nights in Seoul’s clubs felt before 2022 compared with the calmer, more careful nights since]

    Offers Worth Knowing

Everland’s Blood City Zero performances and missions and the Wild Savannah Expedition are included in your park admission. Lotte World’s After 4 ticket saves 12,000 won on an adult entry. The 1330 Korea Travel Helpline is free.

    What’s Changing In 2026

A Saturday Halloween. In 2025, Halloween fell on a Friday. This year it is a Saturday, so expect the busy stretch to run from Friday 30 October through Sunday 1 November. My read: if you want a normal night out that weekend, go early or go somewhere else.

The 2026 safety plan is not out yet. As of 4 October, Seoul and the police had not published this year’s Halloween measures. Every year since 2023 has brought a special period of around ten days, barriers, one way routes and station skips, so plan for the same.

Bigger theme park seasons. A world first Junji Ito tie in at Lotte World and Blood City’s tenth year at Everland mean the parks are pushing harder than ever. Good news for you: more reasons to skip the street crush.

    A Quieter Halloween

Not a party person? Do a daylight costume photo walk or hunt down pumpkin desserts in a cafe. The silver grass at Sky Park is still glowing that week; see my Haneul Park silver grass guide. The What’s On calendar shows everything else that weekend.

    Word Of The Stop

우측통행 (ucheuk tonghaeng): keep right. You will hear “우측통행하세요!” (ucheuk tonghaeng haseyo, please keep right) on crowded streets on Halloween. It is the one Korean phrase that matters most that night.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Is Halloween Celebrated In Seoul?

Yes, mostly by young people in Hongdae, Itaewon, Gangnam and Seongsu, and in big theme park seasons at Lotte World and Everland. It is not a public holiday.

Is It Safe To Go To Itaewon On Halloween?

Police and the city now run special crowd management with barriers, one way walking and station skips. It is far better managed than in 2022, but it is still very crowded on the night, and it is a time of remembrance. Go early, check crowd levels and follow instructions.

When Is Lotte World Halloween 2026?

12 September to 15 November 2026, with the Dark Fantasy Festival parade at 8:20pm and the Junji Ito collaboration from 19 September.

    When Is Everland Halloween 2026?

12 September to 22 November 2026. Blood City Zero runs daily from 4pm to 9pm and is included in park admission.

What Day Is Halloween 2026 In Korea?

Saturday 31 October 2026. Expect crowds from Friday 30 October through the weekend.

    How I Checked This

On 4 October 2026 I rechecked the Lotte World and Everland 2026 dates, prices and programmes against Korean news reports and Everland’s official blog, the 2025 crowd figures and measures in Kyunghyang Shinmun, Seoul Shinmun and Seoul City’s media hub, and the victim count and fourth anniversary plans in The Korea Times, The Korea Herald and Herald Economy. The 2026 police and city plan had not been announced, so this year’s measures are based on 2025; Everland prices come from Korean ticket guides because the official site did not load for me.

Seoul Christmas Market 2026: Gwanghwamun And The Winter Festival

Seoul’s main Christmas market is the Gwanghwamun Market, part of the Seoul Winter Festa, which the city has tentatively set for 4 December 2026 to 31 January 2027. The organiser has announced the 2026 market for 4 to 31 December; last year it was free, 5pm to 10pm. Here in November? The Jamsil market at Lotte World Tower opened first last year, on 20 November.

Sunbae Says: Do Gwanghwamun on a weeknight between 5pm and 7pm, then walk ten minutes to Seoul Plaza and skate for 1,000 won. That is the best cheap night out in a Seoul December.

Picture it: dark by 5:30pm, you come up out of Gwanghwamun Station into cold air, the palace gate glows behind rows of stalls, and someone hands you a paper cup of something hot. Here is how to time it so you are not shuffling shoulder to shoulder.

    Pick Your Market

Three real options and one rainy day backup, using last season’s verified details.

Option Best For Cost Time Needed My Take
Gwanghwamun Market The classic city square Christmas, palace views Free entry (2025) 1 to 2 hours My pick. Pair it with the rink and the lanterns
Lotte Town Christmas Market, Jamsil Trips before December, the giant tree and snow shows Free before 4pm, 5,000 won after (2025) 2 hours Best November option, but book evening slots
Seoul Plaza Ice Rink A cheap, very local night out 1,000 won with skates and helmet 1 hour Do it. Few things in Seoul cost this little
The Hyundai Seoul, Yeouido Freezing or wet days Free to browse 1 to 2 hours Indoor backup only

If you only do one, make it Gwanghwamun on a weeknight. If your trip ends before the festival opens, go to Jamsil and do not feel short changed.

    The Gwanghwamun Market

Think of it as Seoul’s answer to a European Christmas market, set on Gwanghwamun Square with the palace gate and Bugaksan behind it. The city’s 2026 Gwanghwamun Market listing (in Korean) describes the same formula as before: a European Christmas market motif, small business stalls selling handmade goods and food, brand booths, holiday photo zones and free activities. The portal still just says December, but in May the Seoul Tourism Organization, which runs it, said the market and the Cheonggyecheon lanterns will run 4 to 31 December (Yonhap, in Korean). Hours are not out yet.

Last year was themed as a Santa Village. Visit Seoul’s 2025 listing gives 5pm to 10pm daily, free entry and more than 100 small businesses. The city’s own wrap up of the 2025 festival (in Korean) puts the final count at 135 sellers, and the whole Winter Festa at roughly 11 million visits over 24 days, about double the year before. The organiser counted 3.57 million visitors at the market itself, more than double the 1.64 million that Travie reported for 2024. Translation: it is popular, and it is getting more popular fast.

Worth It: early evening on a weekday, when the lights are on and you can actually reach the stalls.

Skip It: Christmas Eve and the Saturday before Christmas after 7pm. In Korea, Christmas is a couples’ holiday, and every couple in Seoul seems to be on that square. My Christmas in Seoul guide explains how the day itself works here.

[SUNBAE FIELD TEST: on a December weeknight, what time the Gwanghwamun Market queues for the carousel and food stalls start to build, and which end of the square is quieter]

[AFFILIATE: Agoda hotels near Gwanghwamun and City Hall]

    The Seoul Winter Festa 2026

The market is one piece of a much bigger city festival. The official Seoul festival page (in Korean) lists 4 December 2026 to 31 January 2027, marked as tentative, at Gwanghwamun Square and six other sites:

    Programme Where What To Expect
Seoul Light Gwanghwamun Gwanghwamun Square Media facade, light sculptures, New Year countdown
Gwanghwamun Market Gwanghwamun Square Christmas stalls, food, photo zones, free activities
Seoul Light Cheonggyecheon Cheonggyecheon stream Light sculptures and media art along the water
Seoul Light DDP Dongdaemun Design Plaza Media facade, a Christmas town, New Year countdown
Seoul Plaza Ice Rink Seoul Plaza, City Hall Outdoor skating and an opening event
Bell Ringing Ceremony Bosingak, Jongno The New Year’s Eve bell and concerts
SeoulCon DDP and other venues K-beauty, awards and creator events

Last season’s pattern is your best guide. The festival site (in Korean) still shows the 2025 timetable: Gwanghwamun Market 12 to 31 December, the lanterns 12 December to 18 January, Seoul Light DDP 18 to 31 December and the rink 19 December to 8 February. The bell on 31 December has its own guide: New Year’s Eve in Seoul. For the lanterns, see my Seoul Lantern Festival guide.

    The Seoul Plaza Ice Rink

This is one of my favourite Seoul traditions. The city’s 2025 rink announcement (in Korean) confirms the price has been 1,000 won since the rink first opened in 2004, and that covers skates and a helmet, with knee pads free to borrow. According to the Seoul Plaza operation notice (in Korean), last season ran 19 December 2025 to 8 February 2026, 10am to 9:30pm Sunday to Friday and 10am to 11pm on Saturdays and public holidays. Booking was on the official rink site, seoulskate.kr. Expect a similar mid December opening.

Heads Up: It is an outdoor rink, and the city suspends skating for fine dust alerts, heavy snow or rain. Book online and you get a text if your session is cancelled; walk up and you just find a closed rink. Check the site on the day.

    The Other Christmas Markets

Lotte Town Christmas Market, Jamsil. This is the one that opens first. VisitKorea’s listing shows the 2025 market ran 20 November to 4 January on Lotte World Tower’s World Park lawn, 11:30am to 10pm, with 52 brands, a heart light show, snow showers, a giant tree and a carousel. Entry was free before 4pm and 5,000 won after, with tickets through Naver booking. Stars and Stripes found a queue already forming at 4pm on a weekday, a long carousel line, last entry at 9:30pm, and food at about 5,000 to 15,000 won. Lotte had not announced 2026 dates when I checked; last year it announced on 19 November for a 20 November opening.

Heads Up: Korean media reported that the first batch of Lotte’s 2025 evening tickets sold out in about ten minutes. If you want the after dark snow show, book the moment dates drop, or go before 4pm when entry was free.

    [AFFILIATE: Agoda hotels near Jamsil]

The Hyundai Seoul. Travie listed a Christmas market on the 5th floor of this Yeouido department store through 31 December last year. It is indoors, which makes it your bad weather card.

Seongsu, Ttukseom and the embassies. Last year brought small community markets in Seongsu and Ttukseom Hangang Park, plus one day embassy and school markets. Charming, but not worth crossing the city for.

    Getting There

Gwanghwamun Market. Take Line 5 (purple) to Gwanghwamun Station. Visit Seoul lists Exit 9 as closest, about 180 m, roughly a 3 minute walk. From City Hall Station (Line 1 dark blue, Line 2 green) it is about a 10 minute walk north up the square.

Seoul Plaza Ice Rink. City Hall Station (Line 1 dark blue, Line 2 green) sits right under the plaza; check Naver Map for the best exit. From the market, walk south about 10 minutes.

Lotte Town Christmas Market. Line 2 (green) or Line 8 (pink) to Jamsil Station, Exit 10, then about 6 minutes on foot, per VisitKorea. From City Hall, Line 2 takes around 40 minutes with no transfer. A subway ride is 1,550 won on a transit card plus a small distance charge, or unlimited with a short term pass; my transit card guide explains which to buy, and the subway map shows the lines.

    What Locals Know

It is a small business fair first. The Seoul Tourism Organization runs the Gwanghwamun Market partly to give small sellers a winter sales window, which is why the stalls lean towards crafts, snacks and gifts from Korean makers rather than imported German kitsch. The line up changes every year, so never rely on last year’s favourite stall.

Details drop late. Last year the full festival programme was announced around 23 November, less than three weeks before opening, and Lotte announced its market the day before it opened. If hours and stall lists are still missing when you read this, that is normal, not a sign of cancellation.

Koreans search in Korean. Type 광화문마켓 or 롯데타운 크리스마스마켓 into Naver Map or Naver search and you get real time photos, queue chatter and booking links days before the English pages update. My travel apps guide shows you how to search Naver without reading Korean.

Christmas Eve belongs to couples. Families do Christmas Day; Christmas Eve is date night, with restaurants booked weeks ahead. Plan your market night earlier in the week.

    Pick Your Version

    If It’s Your First Time

Do Gwanghwamun and the ice rink on the same weeknight, and come back another evening for the lanterns on Cheonggyecheon. If your trip ends before the festival opens, go to Jamsil instead. My Korea in December guide has the rest of your month.

    If You’re Bringing Kids

I’d go to Jamsil in the afternoon, when entry was free last year, and let the kids see the tree and the carousel in daylight before the evening rush. Then do the Seoul Plaza rink on a weekday morning, when it is quieter. My Seoul with kids guide has indoor backups for very cold days.

    If You’re Travelling Solo

Christmas markets are easy solo: you wander, you snack, nobody notices you are on your own. The one evening to avoid is Christmas Eve, when the square is couples wall to wall. My solo in Seoul guide covers the rest of your evenings.

    Sunbae’s Picks

My pick for one December night: Gwanghwamun Market at 5pm on a Tuesday or Wednesday, a walk down to the Cheonggyecheon lanterns, and the ice rink to finish.

If I only had one November afternoon, I’d go to Jamsil before 4pm, then ride Line 2 (green) back into town for dinner.

I’d skip the smaller Seongsu and Ttukseom markets unless you are already staying nearby.

I’d skip Christmas Eve on the square entirely. Spend it somewhere warm with a reservation.

[SUNBAE STORY: a short, general memory of skating at Seoul Plaza on a December night with City Hall lit up, and what it says about how cheap and local Seoul’s winter fun can be]

    Offers Worth Knowing

The Gwanghwamun Market was free last year, and the Seoul Plaza rink has cost 1,000 won, skates included, since 2004. The Jamsil market was free before 4pm last year. For getting around, the city confirms its 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 day short term passes continue (in Korean) even though the 30 day Climate Card has ended.

    What’s Changing In 2026

An earlier start. The Winter Festa is tentatively set to open on 4 December, eight days earlier than last year’s 12 December. If you fly home before Christmas, that is good news: you may catch the lights you would have missed last year. The market itself is planned for 4 to 31 December, so it opens the same day.

Bigger crowds. Visits roughly doubled between 2024 and 2025, and the city wants to grow it into Korea’s flagship winter festival. My read: weekday early evenings matter more every year, and weekends after 7pm will be a slow shuffle.

    What To Eat And Wear

You will be standing on a stone square after dark, and Seoul in December can be properly cold. Dress in layers with a hat and gloves; my full list is in the what to wear guide.

The stalls change every year, so I will not promise you a menu. Your fallback is the street food around Gwanghwamun and Jongno. A paper bag of 붕어빵 (bungeoppang) from a street cart is the correct Seoul answer to cold hands; my winter street food guide tells you what else to look for.

    Word Of The Stop

뱅쇼 (baengsyo): mulled wine, borrowed from the French vin chaud. Once December arrives you will see it on café menus all over Seoul. Ask for “뱅쇼 한 잔 주세요” (baengsyo han jan juseyo), one mulled wine, please.

    How I Checked This

On 5 October 2026 I checked the tentative Winter Festa window and the 2026 Gwanghwamun Market listing on the city’s festival portal, last season’s dates on the festival site, the 2025 results and rink rules on Seoul’s official news pages, the rink notice on the Seoul Plaza site, and the Jamsil market on VisitKorea and in Korean news. The 4 to 31 December market dates come from the organiser’s May announcement as reported by Yonhap; hours, the rink dates and the Jamsil market dates were not announced, so those are last year’s pattern.

  • Christmas In Seoul 2026: Lights, Facades And What Koreans Actually Do

Christmas In Seoul 2026: Lights, Facades And What Koreans Actually Do

Christmas in Seoul is about lights, not family dinners. Friday 25 December 2026 is a public holiday, and locals treat Christmas Eve as a date night with cake. For you, that means the Shinsegae light facade in Myeongdong (usually from early November), a giant new Lotte facade due in December, department store Christmas villages, and the free Seoul Winter Festa from 4 December. Most of it costs nothing.

Sunbae Says: Watch the Shinsegae facade after 10pm. Last year the soundtrack only played from 10pm to midnight, and the crowd had thinned by then.

What Christmas Actually Means In Korea

Here is the part the listicles skip. Christmas is a national holiday, and churches fill up, but for most people it is not a family day at home. After 24 winters here, my summary is simple: Christmas Eve is for couples, Christmas Day is for friends, and Seollal and Chuseok are the family holidays.

That changes your trip. You walk out of your hotel at 7pm on 24 December expecting to wander into dinner, and every table in Myeongdong, Hongdae, Seongsu and Gangnam is taken by couples who booked weeks ago. Book a week or more ahead, or eat before 6pm. In 2026 Christmas Day is a Friday, so Seoul gets a three day weekend and the whole thing stretches to Sunday. The rest of the month is in our Korea in December guide.

The other ritual is cake. A white whipped cream sponge with strawberries is the classic, and bakeries and hotels open preorders weeks ahead. The Korea Herald reported in 2023 that some hotel cakes pass 200,000 won, and that Christmas is the top sales season of the year for SPC, which owns Paris Baguette. For a cheap slice of local culture, walk into any neighbourhood bakery on 24 December and look at the queue.

    Pick Your Christmas Night

Option Best For Cost Time My Take
Myeongdong facades The big lights, photos, late night Free 1 hour My pick, after 10pm on a weeknight
Gwanghwamun and the Winter Festa Market, lanterns, ice rink in one walk Free, rink 1,000 won 2 to 3 hours Best value evening in the city
The Hyundai Seoul village Instagram, kids, cold or wet days Free, but timed entry 1 hour plus queue Only if you land a slot
Lotte Town market, Jamsil November visitors, snow shows Free before 4pm in 2025 2 hours Daytime yes, weekend evenings no

If you only have one night, do Gwanghwamun early and finish in Myeongdong late. You get every kind of Christmas light Seoul does, and you spend 1,000 won.

The Light Facades: Myeongdong Does It Best

Shinsegae main store. The headline act. The building front is now a permanent screen called Shinsegae Square, and every winter it switches to a Christmas film. Shinsegae’s newsroom listed the 2025 show daily from 5pm to midnight and calls it a year end spot visited by about a million people. CBC News reported (in Korean) about 350,000 LEDs, a film of roughly three and a half minutes on loop, and sound from 10pm to midnight. VisitKorea’s department store roundup had it running 7 November 2025 to 31 January 2026. The 2026 dates were not announced when I checked.

Take Line 4 (sky blue) to Hoehyeon Station, Exit 7, which Visit Seoul puts about 220 m from the store.

Heads Up: The old fountain roundabout in front of Shinsegae is being removed, and Korean media reported in late September that the city plans a temporary plaza there by year end. Your classic viewing angle may look different, or be fenced off, this season. Walk the block before you settle on a spot.

Lotte Department Store main store. This is the big change for 2026. Lotte is building “Lotte Town Light”, a 77 m by 21 m screen on its Young Plaza building, which Newspim reports (in Korean) will be the largest media facade in Myeongdong, with a teaser in November and full operation from December. Lotte’s 2025 Christmas facade, per VisitKorea, ran 31 October to 31 December, 5:30pm to 11pm, and the store sits by Euljiro 1(il)-ga Station (Line 2, green), Exit 6. The two stores are about 300 m apart, so you can see both in ten minutes.

[SUNBAE FIELD TEST: once Lotte Town Light switches on, the best single spot in Myeongdong to see both it and the Shinsegae facade, and how crowded it gets at 7pm versus 10pm]

Myeongdong Cathedral. On 24 and 25 December the cathedral joins in. Seoul Shinmun reported (in Korean) that the 2025 projection show ran 5:30pm to 9pm, about five minutes every half hour, with a charity market where priests sold mulled wine and sausages, and carol concerts in the evening. The nearest station is Euljiro 3(sam)-ga (Lines 2 and 3), Exit 12. For Mass times, check the cathedral’s own site (mdsd.or.kr) in December.

The Christmas Villages: Book Or Queue

Department stores now build whole Christmas villages, and the popular ones run on timed entry.

The Hyundai Seoul, Yeouido. In 2025 its 5th floor became a Christmas workshop, open 1 November to 31 December. Magazine Hipet reported (in Korean) that bookings opened on 23 October at 6pm on Naver, in one hour slots of up to four people, and that a same day QR waiting list opened at about 11:30am, with shorter waits on weekdays. Take Line 5 (purple) or Line 9 (gold) to Yeouido Station, Exit 3, and follow the underground moving walkway about 500 m to the store.

Heads Up: If the 2026 village follows last year’s timing, the Naver booking round opens in late October, before most visitors even think about Christmas. If you miss it, go on a weekday and join the QR waiting list when it opens in the morning.

Lotte Town Christmas Market, Jamsil. The biggest market. The 2025 edition ran 20 November to 4 January on the lawn by Lotte World Tower, 11:30am to 10pm, free before 4pm and 5,000 won after. Jamsil Station (Line 2 green, Line 8 pink), Exit 10, about 6 minutes on foot. All the detail is in our Seoul Christmas Market guide.

Seoul Winter Festa: The Free Backbone

From 4 December 2026 to 31 January 2027, tentatively, the Seoul festival portal (in Korean) lists the Winter Festa across Gwanghwamun Square and six other sites: the Gwanghwamun Market (which the organiser plans for 4 to 31 December), Seoul Light shows at Gwanghwamun and DDP, lights on Cheonggyecheon, the Seoul Plaza ice rink and the Bosingak bell. Take Line 5 (purple) to Gwanghwamun Station; Exit 9 is closest to the market. Every dated event lives on our what’s on calendar.

The ice rink is the best deal in the city. The city’s media hub (in Korean) confirms 1,000 won for a one hour session, skates and helmet included, a price that has held since 2004. Last season it opened 19 December, so if you leave before then, you may miss it. For the lanterns, see Seoul Lantern Festival 2026.

[AFFILIATE: Agoda hotels in Myeongdong and Jongno]

    What Locals Know

Myeongdong is turning into a screen district. Shinsegae and Lotte are in an open contest to own the Myeongdong skyline, and both facades run brand and K-pop content all year. The Christmas film is the seasonal star, so if you see an ad when you arrive, wait a few minutes for the loop.

The city plans for Christmas crowds like a festival. Last December Seoul put Myeongdong, Itaewon, Seongsu’s café streets, Hongdae, Gangnam Station and Apgujeong Rodeo under special crowd safety management for 24 and 25 December, with crowd sensing CCTV and emergency texts. The same report counted 1.08 million visitors at the Gwanghwamun Market and lanterns over just the first three days. Expect police guiding foot traffic in Myeongdong; follow the arrows.

Search in Korean for live info. Type 신세계 미디어파사드 or 더현대 크리스마스 into Naver and you see same day photos, queue times and booking links long before English pages update. Our travel apps guide shows you how.

Christmas Eve taxis are a lottery. Late on the 24th, everyone wants a cab at once. Plan your last subway home, and check the subway map for which line gets you back without a transfer.

    Pick Your Version

    If It’s Your First Time

Do Myeongdong one night and Gwanghwamun another. I’d spend 23 December on the facades and markets while the city is still working, and keep 24 December for an early booked dinner. Same lights, half the elbows.

    If You’re Bringing Kids

Go in daylight. Do Jamsil before 4pm, the ice rink in the afternoon, and dinner before the date night crowd arrives. I’d leave the stroller at the hotel for Myeongdong after dark; the pavements jam solid. Our Seoul with kids in winter guide plans the rest of your family days.

    If You’re Travelling Solo

You have the edge on Christmas Eve: bar seats and counter restaurants still have single spaces when tables for two are gone. My suggestion is the 10pm facade with sound, then a late walk past the cathedral. Our solo in Seoul guide has more evening ideas.

    Sunbae’s Picks

My pick for one perfect evening is the Shinsegae facade at 10:15pm on a weeknight in early December. The sound is on, the crowd is thin, and the new film still feels new.

If I only had one daytime hour, I’d skate at Seoul Plaza. It is 1,000 won and one of the few Christmas things in Seoul that still feels completely local.

I’d skip the Jamsil market after 4pm on a weekend and go at 1pm on a Tuesday instead. Same carousel, no paid ticket, no crush.

For the cake ritual, I’d skip the 200,000 won hotel box and buy a slice from a neighbourhood bakery. You get the tradition for the price of a coffee.

[SUNBAE STORY: a short, general memory of a Seoul Christmas Eve as a long term resident, the couples, the cake boxes on the subway, and what surprised you the first year]

    Offers Worth Knowing

The Seoul Plaza rink is 1,000 won an hour with gear included. The Myeongdong facades, the cathedral projections and the Gwanghwamun Market cost nothing. In 2025 the Jamsil market was free before 4pm, and The Hyundai Seoul ran a free same day waiting list. For getting around, the city confirms its 1 to 7 day short term passes continue (in Korean) after the 30 day card ended; our transit card guide explains which one fits.

    What’s Changing In 2026

A second giant screen. With Lotte Town Light due in December, Myeongdong will have two huge facades facing off a few minutes apart. My read: Myeongdong becomes the single best place in Seoul for Christmas lights this year, and also the most crowded. Go on a weeknight.

A new square in front of Shinsegae. The fountain removal and temporary plaza could give you more standing room than the old roundabout pavements, or a building site, depending on timing. I will update this page once the work finishes.

An earlier Winter Festa. The city festival is tentatively set to open on 4 December, eight days earlier than last year.

    Worth It Or Skip It

    Spot Verdict Why
Shinsegae facade, Myeongdong Worth It Free, central, best after 10pm with sound
Seoul Plaza ice rink Worth It 1,000 won an hour, gear included
Jamsil market after 4pm on a weekend Skip It Paid entry, sells out, packed; go before 4pm on a weekday
Christmas Eve dinner without a booking Skip It You will queue in the cold; book ahead or eat by 6pm
The Hyundai Seoul village Worth It on a weekday Try the waiting list in the morning

    A Simple Christmas Eve Plan

Start at Gwanghwamun around 4pm for the market while it is still light. Skate at Seoul Plaza as the sun goes down. Walk to Cheonggyecheon once the lights switch on. Finish in Myeongdong for the cathedral and the facades after 10pm. It is all walkable, and your total entry cost is 1,000 won. Grab a hotteok or fish cake from a street cart on the way; our winter street food guide tells you what to order.

Dress properly. December evenings in Seoul often drop below zero, so read our what to wear guide before you pack.

    Word Of The Stop

성탄절 (seongtanjeol): Christmas Day. You will see it on shop signs announcing holiday hours. The casual greeting is 메리 크리스마스 (meri keuriseumaseu), which is exactly what it sounds like.

    How I Checked This

On 5 October 2026 I checked the Shinsegae facade against its newsroom, Korean news and VisitKorea, Lotte’s new facade in Newspim, Seoul Shinmun and Herald Economy, the Hyundai and cathedral details in Korean reports, the Winter Festa on the city portal, the rink on Seoul’s media hub, and last year’s crowd plan in Korean news. The 2026 dates for the Shinsegae show, the Hyundai village, the Jamsil market and cathedral events are not announced, so those figures are last season’s and labelled that way.

  • Seoul Lantern Festival 2026 On Cheonggyecheon

Seoul Lantern Festival 2026 On Cheonggyecheon

The Seoul Lantern Festival 2026 is planned for 4 to 31 December along Cheonggyecheon Stream in central Seoul, and it is free. The organiser announced those dates in May; the city’s festival page still marks December as tentative. Last year it ran 12 December to 18 January after an extension, lit 6pm to 11pm, over 1.1 km from Cheonggye Plaza to Samilgyo Bridge.

Sunbae Says: Be at Cheonggye Plaza at 5:55pm on a weeknight. You get the switch on moment and the first stretch before the office crowd arrives.

When Is The Seoul Lantern Festival 2026?

The official Seoul festival portal (in Korean) lists the 2026 festival for December in the Cheonggyecheon area, with traditional hanji lanterns and media art in four zones between Cheonggye Plaza and Samilgyo Bridge. In May, the Seoul Tourism Organization, which runs it, said this year’s festival and the Gwanghwamun Market will run 4 to 31 December (Yonhap, in Korean). That is eight days earlier than last year’s opening. This will be the 18th edition; the first was in 2009.

Two things are not confirmed yet: the hours and whether it gets extended into January again. Last year it was due to close on 4 January, but The Korea Times reported that 2.77 million people came in the first 20 days, so it was stretched to 18 January, with Monday maintenance closures during the extra weeks. Closing time also moved from 10pm to 11pm from 16 December.

My planning rule: if you are in Seoul between 4 and 31 December, you will catch it. If you land in January, check stolantern.com before you plan an evening around it. Every confirmed change goes on our what’s on calendar.

The Route And How To Walk It

The lanterns fill the sunken stream path from Cheonggye Plaza, where the stream begins, east past Gwangtonggyo, Gwanggyo and Jangtonggyo bridges to Samilgyo Bridge, about 1.1 km. Always start at the plaza end: the biggest pieces sit there and the flow of people runs east.

A brisk walker can do it in 15 minutes. You will not be brisk. Give it 45 minutes to an hour with photos, then climb out at any bridge. The stream sits below street level, so you go down stairs or ramps. Visit Seoul’s 2025 listing mentions accessible pathways and wheelchair rental.

[SUNBAE FIELD TEST: which ramp or stair down to the stream at Cheonggye Plaza moves fastest at 6pm, and which bridge exit is easiest to climb out at with kids]

    Getting There

From central Seoul, by subway. Take Line 5 (purple) to Gwanghwamun Station, Exit 5. The festival’s own FAQ page (in Korean) puts it at 3 to 5 minutes on foot to Cheonggye Plaza. Or take Line 1 (dark blue) or Line 2 (green) to City Hall Station, Exit 4, which Visit Seoul also lists. A subway ride costs 1,550 won on a transit card, or nothing extra on a short term pass; our transit card guide explains which to buy.

Leaving from the far end. Samilgyo Bridge is close to Euljiro 3(sam)-ga Station (Line 2 green, Line 3 orange); check Naver Map for the nearest exit. Jonggak Station (Line 1, dark blue) is a short walk north of the middle of the route. The subway map shows how they connect.

Getting home late. The FAQ points out that with an 11pm finish last year, you still had time for the last trains and buses. Seoul’s last subway trains are usually around midnight, so do not linger past 11:30pm without a plan.

    What You Will Actually See

This is not a row of paper lanterns on strings. It mixes traditional hanji (Korean mulberry paper) lanterns with LED sculpture, kinetic pieces and media art. The 2025 theme was “My Light, Our Dream, the Magic of Seoul”, across four zones and a second site on Ui Stream in northern Seoul.

Last year’s crowd pleasers included a Pokémon Korea collaboration with glowing Magikarp, held on the Jangtonggyo bridge, a sculpture called “Wings of Dreams”, and “Hwanwol”, a moon jar built from recycled car headlights. Themes change every year, so treat those as a taste, not a promise.

Slow down for the hanji work. The paper glows differently from LED, and that is the part you cannot see anywhere else. For photos, shoot from the bridges looking down the stream, not from the path. You get the lanterns and their reflections, and you are not blocking anyone. Phone night modes handle it well; a tripod on the narrow path will earn you glares.

    Beating The Crowds

This is the real issue. The Seoul Tourism Organization counted 3.83 million visitors over 37 days last season, more than 100,000 a night and 55 percent up on the year before. Weekend nights and the days around Christmas and New Year are the heaviest.

Picture a Saturday at 7:30pm: you come down the steps at Cheonggye Plaza and the path is moving at shuffle speed, shoulder to shoulder, all the way to the first bridge. Now picture a Tuesday at 6pm: you have room to stop at each piece. Go Monday to Thursday. Arrive at 6pm for the switch on, or after 9:30pm when families have gone home.

Heads Up: The stream path is narrow and the stepping stones are tempting. Do not stop dead on them for selfies; people behind you cannot go around, and staff will move you on. Keep your bag in front of you, and if police or staff switch the path to one way flow, follow it.

Heads Up: No dogs on Cheonggyecheon. The festival FAQ says pets are not allowed on the stream path unless carried or in a pet stroller.

    What Locals Know

It runs in light rain. The festival FAQ says it is cancelled only if the stream itself is closed off for heavy rain, or a heavy snow advisory is issued. Light rain or snow? Staff clear the path and it goes ahead, and the crowds thin out. A drizzly Tuesday is secretly a great night.

It is one ticket in a bigger city festival. The lanterns sit inside Seoul’s Winter Festa (in Korean), tentatively 4 December to 31 January, and the city’s own wrap up (in Korean) puts last season’s total at roughly 11 million visits. The market, the ice rink and the light shows are all within a ten minute walk.

Koreans call it 빛초롱. Search 서울빛초롱축제 on Naver or Instagram and you get same night photos and crowd chatter, which is the fastest way to judge whether to go now or later. Our travel apps guide shows how.

It won awards, and it shows. In May the festival and the Gwanghwamun Market took two golds and a bronze at the Global Eventex Awards. Expect the organiser to go bigger, not smaller, in 2026.

    Pick Your Version

    If It’s Your First Time

Pair it with the rest of the city centre on one evening. I’d do the lanterns at 6pm on a weeknight, then walk up to Gwanghwamun for the Seoul Light show and the market. Three of the Winter Festa’s big pieces, no subway needed.

    If You’re Bringing Kids

Go on a weeknight at 6pm, and bring the stroller only if it folds easily; you reach the path by stairs or ramps and it gets tight. Plan on 30 to 40 minutes rather than the full route, and exit at the second or third bridge when little legs give out. Our Seoul with kids in winter guide plans the rest of your family days.

    If You’re Travelling Solo

One of the easiest evenings in Seoul to do alone: free, central, well lit and full of people. I’d go after 9:30pm, walk the whole route at your own pace, and finish with something hot from a street stall. More ideas in our solo in Seoul guide.

    Sunbae’s Picks

My pick for the best hour is 6pm to 7pm on Tuesday 8 or Wednesday 9 December, the first full week. The pieces are fresh, the crowd is thin, and you see the switch on.

If I only had one photo, I’d take it from the first bridge east of the plaza, looking back upstream, where the biggest pieces sit in the water.

I’d skip New Year’s Eve at the lanterns unless crowds are the point. On 31 December 2025, the city’s media hub (in Korean) said the lanterns stayed lit to 1am, next door to the Bosingak bell crowd. With a 31 December end date this year, check whether that late night repeats. Our New Year’s Eve guide has calmer options.

[SUNBAE STORY: a short, general memory of walking Cheonggyecheon on a cold December night over the years, and how the festival has grown from a quiet stream walk into one of the city’s biggest crowds]

    Offers Worth Knowing

Walking the route is free; in 2025 only a few hands on programmes charged a fee. The Seoul Plaza ice rink (in Korean), a few minutes away, has charged 1,000 won an hour with skates and helmet since 2004.

[AFFILIATE: Agoda hotels in Jongno and Gwanghwamun]

    What’s Changing In 2026

Earlier, and possibly shorter. The planned run is 4 to 31 December, so it opens over a week earlier than last year. If you fly home in early December, that is a win. If you were counting on January, wait for news of an extension before you plan around it.

Even bigger crowds. Visits rose 55 percent last year. My read: the weeknight 6pm rule matters more than ever, and late December weekends will be a slow shuffle.

Pair It With The Rest Of Winter Festa

Cheonggye Plaza is a few minutes’ walk from the Gwanghwamun Market and the Seoul Plaza ice rink. A good evening: skate at 5pm, lanterns at 6pm, hot food at the Gwanghwamun Market at 7pm. See our Seoul Christmas Market and Christmas In Seoul guides, grab a bungeoppang from a cart (our winter street food guide explains), and dress for below zero with our what to wear list.

[AFFILIATE: Klook night tour of Seoul that includes Cheonggyecheon]

    Worth It Or Skip It

Worth It: the Cheonggyecheon route on a weeknight. Free, central, a good hour of evening for zero won.

Skip It: weekend nights in the week before Christmas if you have any other option. Same lanterns, twice the crowd.

Seoul Lantern Festival Vs Lotus Lantern Festival

People mix these up. The Seoul Lantern Festival is the winter light show on Cheonggyecheon. The Lotus Lantern Festival (Yeondeunghoe) is the Buddhist lantern parade in spring, before Buddha’s Birthday, usually in May. Different season, different feel. Our Korea in December guide covers the rest of the winter calendar.

    Word Of The Stop

빛초롱 (bitchorong): “light lantern”, from 빛 (bit, light) and 초롱 (chorong, a traditional hand lantern). The festival’s Korean name is 서울빛초롱축제 (Seoul Bitchorong Chukje). Say “bitchorong” to a taxi driver and point at Cheonggyecheon.

  • K-Pop In Seoul This Winter: Awards, Concerts And Where To Feel It

K-Pop In Seoul This Winter: Awards, Concerts And Where To Feel It

Seoul has two big K-pop award weekends this winter, both at Gocheok Sky Dome: the Korea Grand Music Awards (KGMA) on 7 and 8 November and the Melon Music Awards (MMA) on 14 and 15 November. SBS Gayo Daejeon follows on 24 and 25 December at KINTEX, just outside Seoul. MAMA, AAA and the Golden Disc Awards are abroad this season, so plan around November.

Sunbae Says: Do not fly to Seoul for MAMA this year. It is in Osaka on 20 and 21 November. Book a Gocheok weekend in November instead; two shows a week apart means two chances at tickets.

    Pick Your Show

Option Dates Best For Tickets My Take
KGMA 7 to 8 Nov, Gocheok Sky Dome Big line ups, earlier in the month On sale from 2 Oct via NOL Easier to get than MMA. Good first award show
Melon Music Awards 14 to 15 Nov, Gocheok Sky Dome The prestige night, chart based awards Not announced as of 5 Oct My pick if you can land seats
SBS Gayo Daejeon 24 to 25 Dec, KINTEX, Goyang A K-pop Christmas Not announced Fun, but a TV recording with limited seats
Free fan spots Year round Everyone, no ticket stress Free Do these regardless

If I had to choose one, I’d go MMA on Saturday 14 November and keep KGMA as the backup the weekend before.

The Two Award Weekends At Gocheok

Korea Grand Music Awards, 7 to 8 November. The third KGMA, run by the sports daily Ilgan Sports, splits into an Artist Day and a Music Day with 20 acts each. Gukje News lists (in Korean) a line up that includes ATEEZ, RIIZE, TREASURE, ITZY, Kiss of Life, P1Harmony and Hearts2Hearts. Korean reports say domestic tickets opened on 2 October at 6pm, exclusively through the NOL platform. The organisers have replaced the red carpet with a fan facing “Star Road” outside, plus a K-beauty zone near the dome.

Melon Music Awards, 14 to 15 November. The 18th MMA is a two day event for the first time, themed “K-POP CONNECT: The New Pulse”. By the end of September, Melon had announced three rounds of performers, including PLAVE, RIIZE, ILLIT, NCT 127, NCT DREAM, ATEEZ and TWS, according to Korean reports such as Gukje News (in Korean). Ticket sales had not been announced when I checked, though Melon and its partners were already running prize draws for seats.

[AFFILIATE: Agoda hotels near Guil and Sindorim for Gocheok Sky Dome]

Heads Up: Buy only from the official sale platform named by each show. Resold award show tickets are a classic scam, and many K-pop events check the name on the booking against your ID at the gate. Read your ticket’s terms before you pay anyone.

    Getting To Gocheok Sky Dome

Take Line 1 (dark blue) to Guil Station, Exit 2, which Visit Seoul puts about 330 m from the dome. From City Hall it is about 20 minutes on Line 1 with no transfer, but board a train bound for Incheon, because the Cheonan branch splits off at Guro; check the subway map. A ride is 1,550 won on a transit card, or covered by a short term pass from our transit card guide.

Gocheok seats 20,200 for concerts. Picture the end of the night: twenty thousand people with light sticks heading for one small Line 1 station. Wait 30 minutes in a café nearby and you will ride home in comfort. The rest of the month is in our Korea in November guide.

[SUNBAE FIELD TEST: on an award show night at Gocheok, how long the queue at Guil Station takes after the finale, and whether walking to Sindorim is faster]

The Award Shows That Left Korea

This is what most “K-pop in Korea” pages miss. The 2026 to 2027 circuit is spread across Asia:

    Show Dates Where
KGMA 7 to 8 Nov 2026 Gocheok Sky Dome, Seoul
Melon Music Awards 14 to 15 Nov 2026 Gocheok Sky Dome, Seoul
MAMA Awards 20 to 21 Nov 2026 Kyocera Dome, Osaka, Japan
Asia Artist Awards 5 to 6 Dec 2026 Kaohsiung National Stadium, Taiwan
Golden Disc Awards (41st) 9 to 10 Jan 2027 VEC, Hanoi, Vietnam

CJ ENM confirms MAMA in Osaka, the Korea Daily reports (in Korean) AAA in Kaohsiung, and Newsis reports (in Korean) the Golden Disc Awards in Hanoi. Every confirmed date goes on our what’s on calendar.

    Christmas And Year End

SBS Gayo Daejeon, 24 to 25 December. For its 30th anniversary, SBS is running its year end festival over two days for the first time, on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, at KINTEX in Ilsan, according to Slist (in Korean). KINTEX is in Goyang, just northwest of Seoul; GTX-A (purple) runs from Seoul Station to Kintex Station. Seats for TV recordings are limited and each broadcaster runs its own process, so watch for SBS’s notice. If you are in town at Christmas anyway, our Christmas in Seoul guide covers the free lights.

KBS and MBC. KBS Song Festival and MBC Gayo Daejejeon usually fall in the last days of December, but their 2026 dates and venues were not announced when I checked.

SeoulCon at DDP, 29 December to 1 January. The Seoul festival portal (in Korean) lists SeoulCon at Dongdaemun Design Plaza with K-pop performances, a New Year countdown, creator talks and K-lifestyle exhibits. The 2026 line up and ticketing were not out. For the other countdowns, see our New Year’s Eve guide, and for the rest of the month, Korea in December.

    Music Show Recordings

Weekly music shows such as M Countdown, Music Bank and Inkigayo record in Seoul with live audiences. Foreign visitors do get in, through a mix of online applications, early morning queues and paid audience packages sold by travel agencies. Bring your passport, make sure the name matches, and expect to stand for hours.

Rules change often, and each show runs its own system. Check the broadcaster’s current notice the week you travel. If you buy a package, confirm in writing which show, which day and whether it is a prerecorded session or the live broadcast.

[AFFILIATE: Trazy or Klook music show audience packages]

Where To Feel It For Free

HiKR Ground. The Korea Tourism Organization’s culture centre by Cheonggyecheon is free. Its official site (in Korean) describes a 32 m media wall, a K-pop zone where you film yourself in music video style sets like a subway car or a coin laundry, with your own choice of music and lighting, and a tourist information centre on the 5th floor. Floors 1 to 4 open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 8pm, closed Mondays. The site gives Jonggak Station (Line 1, dark blue), Exit 5, a 2 minute walk, or Euljiro 1(il)-ga Station (Line 2, green), Exit 2, about 4 minutes. In December the Seoul Lantern Festival lights up the stream outside.

K-Star Road. A 1 km stretch in Apgujeong lined with 18 “GangnamDol” bear statues painted for K-pop groups, including a 3 m PSY figure near Galleria Department Store. Visit Seoul starts it at Apgujeong Rodeo Station (Suin-Bundang Line, yellow), Exit 2. Give it 30 to 45 minutes. It costs nothing.

KSPO Dome concerts. For shows at Olympic Park’s 15,000 seat arena, take Line 5 (purple) or Line 9 (gold) to Olympic Park Station. International fans can buy many concert tickets through NOL World, the global site of the former Interpark Ticket.

Heads Up: Old blogs still send people to HYBE Insight and SMTOWN Coex Artium. HYBE’s own site says Insight ended operations at the Yongsan building on 15 January 2023, and the Coex Artium shut in 2020. Do not cross the city for either.

    What Locals Know

Award shows are now festivals. KGMA and MMA both went to two days this year, with side zones and fan programmes outside the hall. Arrive a couple of hours early and you get the merch, the photo walls and the K-beauty freebies, not just the show.

Prize draws are a real route in. Korean banks, brokers and Melon itself have been giving away MMA seats through app missions and daily codes on Instagram. Most need a Korean account, but Melon’s Instagram codes are worth watching if you follow along in Korean.

The Korean words matter. Search 멜론뮤직어워드 or KGMA 티켓 on Naver, and look for 예매 (booking) and 티켓오픈 (ticket opening) in headlines. That is how you spot the sale date before English accounts repost it. Our travel apps guide explains how to search.

K-culture starts at the airport. The tourism organisation also runs HiKR Station in the Incheon Airport transport centre basement, open daily 10am to 7pm except the last Wednesday of the month, per the HiKR site. A handy first stop if you land early.

    Pick Your Version

    If It’s Your First Time

Build one night around a live show and keep the rest of your trip normal. I’d book a Gocheok award night, spend the next day at HiKR Ground and on K-Star Road, and leave the music show queues to the superfans. File your e-Arrival Card before you fly.

    If You’re Travelling Solo

K-pop is one of the easiest ways to feel part of a crowd in Seoul on your own. At a big show you are surrounded by people who already love your favourite song. I’d pick a seat over standing, arrive early for the official light stick, and ride home after the rush. Our solo in Seoul guide covers the rest of your evenings.

    If You’re Bringing Kids

Skip the late award shows and do HiKR Ground on a weekend afternoon. Filming a mini music video lands with most kids and teens, and the building is warm, central and free.

    Sunbae’s Picks

My pick for this season is MMA on Saturday 14 November, with KGMA on 7 or 8 November as the backup.

If I only had one free afternoon, I’d go to HiKR Ground, film something daft in the K-pop zone, then walk the stream as it gets dark.

After two decades behind the decks in Seoul, I’d skip standing outside agency buildings hoping to see idols. It annoys staff and neighbours and rarely works. Spend that time at a show where they actually perform.

[SUNBAE STORY: a short, general memory from two decades of Seoul nightlife of how K-pop crowds and fan culture have changed, without naming real people]

    Offers Worth Knowing

HiKR Ground and K-Star Road cost nothing, and HiKR runs Korean language docent tours Tuesday to Sunday at 10:30am and 3:30pm. Music show audience places come through each broadcaster’s own process, so check it before you pay an agency.

    What’s Changing In 2026

More shows at home, and longer ones. Seoul gained a second big November award weekend, and both Gocheok shows doubled to two days. My read: more seats in total, but the best acts are spread across days, so check the day by day line up before you buy.

The rest keeps travelling. MAMA has been held in Macao, Singapore, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Japan and the United States, and the Golden Disc Awards head to Hanoi as their eighth overseas host. The big shows are following the fans.

    Worth It Or Skip It

Worth It: a Gocheok award night if you can get seats. HiKR Ground, especially on a cold afternoon. K-Star Road if you are already in Gangnam.

Skip It: HYBE Insight and SMTOWN Coex Artium, both closed. And the agency building stakeout.

    Word Of The Stop

응원봉 (eungwonbong): light stick. Literally “cheering stick”. Every fandom has its own design, and at a big show the whole arena glows in the group’s colour.

  • New Year’s Eve In Seoul: The Bosingak Bell And Better Alternatives

New Year’s Eve In Seoul: The Bosingak Bell And Better Alternatives

On New Year’s Eve in Seoul, the main event is the Bosingak bell in Jongno, rung 33 times at midnight. It is listed again for 31 December 2026 in the city’s Winter Festa, it is free, and more than 100,000 people usually come. Last year the subway and buses ran until 2am. For more room, try Gwanghwamun, Myeongdong, DDP, Lotte World Tower or a first sunrise hike.

Sunbae Says: Do not plan to use Jonggak Station. Last year trains ran straight through it from 11pm to 1am. Walk in from Gwanghwamun or Jongno 3(sam)-ga instead.

    Pick Your Countdown

Option Best For Cost Crowd My Take
Bosingak bell The classic, once in a lifetime Free Extreme Do it once, from the edge
Gwanghwamun Square First timers who want the moment with room Free Heavy but open My pick
Myeongdong Square K-pop stage, screens, fireworks Free; seated area by lottery last year Heavy Best for a party mood
DDP and SeoulCon Media facade, K-pop fans Free outside; SeoulCon tickets vary Medium Good if you stay in Dongdaemun
Lotte World Tower Photos, fireworks, families Free from outside Medium, spread out Best view from Seokchon Lake
First sunrise hike Families, early risers Free Busy at dawn The most Korean way to start the year

If you only pick one, go to Gwanghwamun. You get the countdown, the bell is a short walk away, and you can walk home afterwards.

How The Bosingak Bell Ceremony Works

Bosingak Pavilion sits on Jongno, the old main street of Seoul. At midnight the bell is struck 33 times, a tradition called 제야의 종 (jeyaui jong). The ringers are chosen citizens, usually volunteers and everyday heroes, plus a few public figures. Last year the city opened nominations in early November.

For the 2025 ceremony, Kyunghyang Shinmun reported (in Korean) a programme from 11pm to 12:20am: about 50 minutes of performances, 11 bell ringers including singers Sean and Yang Hee-eun, then rock band Crying Nut. Medical booths and four warming shelters were set up. The 2026 ceremony is listed in the Winter Festa programme (in Korean), with no details yet. I add them to our what’s on calendar the day they land.

    Getting There And Home

This is where visitors come unstuck. Picture it: 12:25am, well below zero, and you and thousands of strangers all want the same subway entrance. Last year’s plan, per Kyunghyang Shinmun:

    • Subway and city buses ran until 2am on 1 January.
    • Jonggak Station (Line 1, dark blue) did not stop from 11pm on 31 December to 1am on 1 January.
    • 47 bus routes were diverted from 6pm on the 31st to 7am on the 1st, with roads around the site closed.

Walking in. Take Line 5 (purple) to Gwanghwamun Station, or Line 1 (dark blue), Line 3 (orange) or Line 5 (purple) to Jongno 3(sam)-ga Station, and walk about 10 minutes to Bosingak; check Naver Map for the exit nearest your side of the barriers. A ride is 1,550 won on a transit card or covered by a short term pass; see our transit card guide and the subway map.

My rule: arrive by 10:30pm, agree a meeting point in case you get separated, and do not count on a taxi after midnight. Walk 15 minutes away from the crowd before you even open a taxi app.

Heads Up: Your phone may blare a loud Korean emergency text on New Year’s Eve. The city uses disaster texts, sirens and loudspeakers for crowd warnings at big events. Paste it into a translation app and follow it; our travel apps guide has the ones that work.

[AFFILIATE: Agoda hotels near Jongno and Gwanghwamun (walk home after midnight)]

    Crowd Safety: Take It Seriously

Seoul now plans New Year’s Eve crowds carefully, and since the Itaewon crowd crush of 29 October 2022, that care is visible. For 2025 the city’s media hub (in Korean) named six high density zones: Jonggak, Gwanghwamun, DDP, Myeongdong, Namsan and Achasan. The city’s year end plan, reported by Money Today (in Korean), put every agency on emergency duty for the bell, which draws over 100,000 people a year, and switched on more than 1,000 crowd sensing CCTV cameras across the city.

Your part: stay near the edges, keep small children well away from the densest spot, and leave if the crowd stops moving. If you feel pressure from behind, move sideways, not forward. Nobody will judge you for watching from the back.

    The Better Alternatives

Gwanghwamun Square. Last year the Seoul Light Gwanghwamun media show ended with a midnight countdown on the gate and nearby buildings, a short walk from Bosingak but far more open. The Gwanghwamun Market stayed open until 1am, the Seoul Plaza ice rink to 12:30am, and the lanterns on Cheonggyecheon to 1am. This year both the market and the lanterns are planned to end on 31 December, so New Year’s Eve may be their final night. Line 5 (purple), Gwanghwamun Station; Exit 9 is closest to the square. Our Seoul Christmas Market guide has the details.

Myeongdong Square. New last year, and a hit. Jung-gu district and KBS ran Myeongdong’s first big official countdown from 11pm, built around the Shinsegae main store’s giant screen, with K-pop and ballad stages in front of Shinsegae and the Seoul Central Post Office, fireworks, and the countdown on 14 screens across Myeongdong, according to Asia Economy (in Korean). It went out live on KBS 1TV and YouTube, and 1,000 free audience places were given by lottery through KBS. With Lotte’s new giant facade due in December, expect Myeongdong to go bigger. Line 4 (sky blue), Hoehyeon Station, Exit 7, or Myeong-dong Station. More in our Christmas In Seoul guide.

[SUNBAE FIELD TEST: on New Year’s Eve in Myeongdong, which side street fills last and still sees the Shinsegae screen, and how long it takes to walk out to Euljiro after midnight]

DDP and SeoulCon. Dongdaemun Design Plaza ran a media facade countdown with pyrotechnics last year, and the SeoulCon festival (in Korean), 29 December to 1 January, lists K-pop performances and a New Year countdown. Take Line 2 (green), Line 4 (sky blue) or Line 5 (purple) to Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station. See our K-pop winter guide.

Lotte World Tower. To welcome 2026, the 555 m tower ran a countdown on its media facade, then lasers and fireworks, with greetings in five languages, according to Epoch Times Korea (in Korean). Watch free from the plaza or around Seokchon Lake. Line 2 (green) or Line 8 (pink) to Jamsil Station. The 2026 plans were not announced.

Or Skip Midnight And Chase The First Sunrise

Koreans take the first sunrise of the year, 해돋이 (haedoji), almost as seriously as midnight. On 1 January 2026 the sun rose over Seoul at 7:47am, per the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute figures (in Korean); expect almost the same in 2027. Achasan in eastern Seoul bills itself as the first place the sun rises in Seoul, and on 1 January 2026 Gwangjin district ran a sunrise festival there with LED light tunnels on the trail and a joint safety room with police and firefighters, reported Seoul Pn (in Korean). Take Line 5 (purple) to Achasan Station and check Naver Map for the trail entrance. Dress for well below zero; read our what to wear guide first.

    What Locals Know

The bell is better on TV. In my experience, plenty of Seoulites watch the bell at home and save their energy for the dawn sunrise. The ceremony is broadcast and streamed, so staying in is a local choice, not a cop out.

Sunrise is the real crowd. Hills like Achasan and Namsan were on the city’s managed crowd list last year for a reason. Go up early, bring a hot drink, and do not expect to be alone.

New Year is two holidays. 1 January is a public holiday, but the big family new year is Seollal, the Lunar New Year, in February. Many shops and restaurants in tourist areas still open on 1 January, but check hours for anything specific. Our Korea in December guide covers the whole season.

Search the Korean name. Type 제야의 종 or 명동스퀘어 카운트다운 into Naver in late December and you will find the line up, road closures and transit notices before the English pages do.

    Pick Your Version

    If It’s Your First Time

Go to Gwanghwamun, not Bosingak. You get the countdown, a last look at the market and lanterns, and the bell a short walk away. I’d eat early, get to the square by 10:30pm and walk home rather than fight for the subway.

    If You’re Bringing Kids

Skip midnight. For families, the first sunrise is my favourite option: early bedtime, early start, and 1 January 2027 is a Friday public holiday, so the long weekend is ahead of you. If your kids are set on staying up, watch Lotte World Tower from Seokchon Lake, where there is room to step back. Our Seoul with kids in winter guide plans the rest of the weekend.

    If You’re Travelling Solo

Bosingak is worth doing once, and solo is the easiest way: one person slips to the edge far more easily than a group. I’d stay at the back on the Gwanghwamun side, keep your phone charged, and head west after the bell. More nights out in our solo in Seoul guide.

    Sunbae’s Picks

My pick for a first New Year in Seoul is the Gwanghwamun countdown, then a slow walk along the lit stream.

If I only had one photo, I’d take Lotte World Tower from across Seokchon Lake at midnight: the tower, the lasers and the lake in one frame.

After two decades behind the decks in this city’s clubs, my advice is that midnight in a packed venue can be just as good as midnight outside, if you book ahead. Check the venue’s own notice for cover charges and ID rules.

I’d skip the taxi queue at 12:30am in Jongno. Walk, or ride the late subway.

[SUNBAE STORY: a short, general memory of playing a New Year’s Eve set in a Seoul club, what the room feels like at midnight, without naming venues or people]

    Offers Worth Knowing

Every public countdown here is free: the bell, Gwanghwamun, Myeongdong, the DDP facade and the Lotte World Tower show from outside. Last year the city ran the subway and buses until 2am and kept the lanterns and market open until 1am. Watch for the 2026 announcement in late December.

    What’s Changing In 2026

More countdowns, more screens. Myeongdong joined the countdown map last year, and this December Lotte switches on a second giant facade there. My read: that spreads the crowd. Pick the site closest to your hotel and walk home.

The festival may end on the night. The lanterns and the Gwanghwamun Market are planned to close on 31 December this year, not in January. If New Year’s Eve is your only night in town, you may catch their final evening.

    Worth It Or Skip It

    Option Verdict Best For
Bosingak bell in the crowd Worth It once, if you like crowds Solo travellers, couples
Gwanghwamun countdown Worth It First timers who want room to move

    Word Of The Stop

새해 복 많이 받으세요 (saehae bok mani badeuseyo): “Receive lots of luck in the new year.” It is the standard New Year greeting. Say it to your guesthouse owner on 1 January and watch them smile.

    How I Checked This

On 5 October 2026 I checked last year’s programme, transit hours and closures in Kyunghyang Shinmun, the safety plan on Seoul’s media hub and in Money Today, the Myeongdong countdown in Asia Economy, the Lotte World Tower show in Epoch Times Korea, the sunrise time against the published institute figure, Achasan in Seoul Pn, and the 2026 listings on the Seoul festival portal. None of the 2026 New Year’s Eve details have been announced; everything here is last year’s pattern until the city publishes.

  • Your First Ski Trip In Korea: Resorts Near Seoul

Your First Ski Trip In Korea: Resorts Near Seoul

For a first ski trip from Seoul, book the shuttle to MONA YongPyong in Gangwon and take a beginner lesson. The season usually opens in the second half of November: Yongpyong opened on 21 November last season and High1 on 28 November. A full day with shuttle, lift, rental, ski suit and group lesson costs about 288,000 won at last season’s prices.

Sunbae Says: Do not pack ski clothes. Rent the jacket and trousers at the resort (30,000 won for the day at Yongpyong) and save your suitcase for shopping.

Picture it: you are on a bus out of Hongdae before the sun is up, asleep by the motorway, and by 9am you are clicking into rented skis under a mountain that hosted Olympic races. By dinner you are back in the city with tired legs and a story. That is the trip this guide sets up.

When Does Ski Season Start In Korea?

Korean resorts open when nights get cold enough to make snow, so opening days move every year. Most years the big Gangwon resorts start in the second half of November, with one or two beginner slopes first and more runs opening over the following weeks.

Last season, VisitKorea’s ski resort roundup gave MONA YongPyong’s start as 21 November 2025, and Korean press reported Phoenix Pyeongchang opening the same day. High1 followed on 28 November, a week earlier than usual, with one beginner slope and a sledding hill. Elysian Gangchon, the closest resort by train, opened on 6 December.

For 2026/27, no resort had announced an opening day when I checked on 5 October. The clearest signal is Yongpyong’s shuttle booking partner, which lists Seoul shuttles from 27 November 2026 to 1 March 2027. I post opening days on our what’s on calendar as they land.

Heads Up: If your trip is before late November, there may be no snow at all. Check the resort’s site the week you fly, and read Korea in November for what else the month does well.

If you land in the first two weeks of the season, expect fewer runs and machine made snow. December, covered in Korea in December, is when most resorts are fully open.

    Choosing A Resort

The short version: the Gyeonggi and Chuncheon resorts are about an hour from Seoul and good for a half day. The Gangwon mountain resorts are further but bigger, with more beginner terrain and English lessons.

Resort Where From Seoul Best For My Take
MONA YongPyong Pyeongchang, Gangwon About 2.5 hours by shuttle A proper first day My pick: English group lessons, published prices, shuttle from Hongdae and Myeongdong
High1 Jeongseon, Gangwon Further still Nervous beginners who want a long run Its 4.2 km valley course lets you ride from the top; best as an overnight
Elysian Gangchon Chuncheon, Gangwon About an hour by train Car free half day The only one here you reach on a commuter line plus a walk
Jisan Forest Resort Icheon, Gyeonggi About 60 km A quick taster Small, close, cheap to try
Konjiam Resort Gwangju, Gyeonggi About 40 minutes by car from the city Families with a car The largest near Seoul, with app ticketing
Vivaldi Park (Sono) Hongcheon, Gangwon About 80 km (approx.) Night owls Busy with young Koreans; night skiing runs very late

High1 is the one for anxious first timers: its own facilities page describes the 4.2 km valley course as mostly straight with a low gradient, “favored by beginners”, running from the mountain top to the valley condos. That means you can ride a gondola up and enjoy the view on the way down instead of circling the bunny slope all day.

What A Day Costs: Yongpyong Example

These are 2025/26 season prices from Yongpyong’s English site. The 2026/27 prices were not published by 5 October, so treat them as a guide.

Item Adult (14+) Child (13 and under)
Shuttle bus, Seoul return 44,000 won 32,000 won
Day lift ticket (9am to 5pm) 96,000 won 78,000 won
    Half day lift (9am to 1pm or 1pm to 5pm) 68,000 won 56,000 won
Full rental set, day 48,000 won 42,000 won
Ski suit, jacket and trousers, day 30,000 won not listed separately
Beginner group ski lesson (2 hours) 70,000 won per person same, ages 8 and up

Add it up and an adult pays about 288,000 won. The lift price page adds a 1,000 won deposit on the lift card, refunded at any kiosk. The rental page says the desk on the first floor of Dragon Plaza keeps your ID until you return the gear.

Heads Up: The rental desk holds your ID all day. Hand over a driving licence or other photo card, and keep your passport in a locker, not at the counter.

[AFFILIATE: Klook or Trazy Yongpyong ski day tour with shuttle, rental and lesson]

    Getting There Without A Car

Your alarm goes at 4:45am, and the bus leaves at 5:25am with or without you. That is the price of a full day on the snow.

    Option Check

Option Best For Cost Time My Take
Yongpyong shuttle from Hongdae or Myeongdong A full or half day at Yongpyong 22,000 won each way About 2.5 hours My pick: door to slope, no changes
Gyeongchun Line (teal green) to Baegyang-ri, walk to Elysian Gangchon A cheap afternoon taster A subway fare About an hour from eastern Seoul Best value; check the season timetable
KTX to Pyeongchang (Jinbu) Travellers with a resort booking Check Korail+ About 1.5 hours on the train The resort shuttle from Jinbu is for booked guests
Express bus to Hoenggye Budget travellers who do not mind a taxi at the end Check the T-money bus app Check the app Workable, but the shuttle is easier

The Yongpyong Shuttle Step By Step

The shuttle timetable gives these boarding points:

    1. Hongik University Station (Line 2, green; AREX, blue): Exit 8, walk 130 m straight to the Starbucks at the airport railroad branch. Buses at 5:25am and 8:50am.
    2. Sinchon Station (Line 2, green): Exit 7, about 100 m ahead, in front of Olive Young. Buses at 5:30am and 8:55am.
    3. Myeongdong Station (Line 4, sky blue): Exit 1, in front of the Korea Electric Power building. Buses at 5:25am and 8:45am.
    4. Dongdaemun: in front of the Doota fashion mall’s main entrance, on the road side, 10 minutes after Myeongdong.
    5. Sports Complex Station (Line 2, green; Line 9, gold): Exit 6, last city pick up at about 6:20am or 10am.

Return buses leave the resort at 1pm and 5pm, dropping at Jamsil Station Exit 5, Sports Complex, Myeongdong and Sinchon. The English page lists 22,000 won each way for adults and 16,000 won for children; the Korean page showed 20,000 won for adults when I checked, so budget 22,000 and enjoy any change. Tickets are booked online, not sold at the stop.

Use a Climate Card tourist pass or T-money card for the subway ride to the stop, and pin the exit in Naver Map the night before (our travel apps guide shows how).

    The Train Option: Elysian Gangchon

Elysian Gangchon sits beside Baegyang-ri Station on the Gyeongchun Line (teal green), the commuter line that runs out from Sangbong and Cheongnyangni to Chuncheon. Korean visitors walk from the station, and Asia Today reported (in Korean) that the resort also runs a free shuttle from Baegyang-ri. Last season ITX-Cheongchun trains made extra ski season stops there. Check the 2026/27 timetable on Naver Map before you go.

    Flying In For Skiing

The airport shuttle runs from 7 December 2026 to 12 February 2027, according to the booking partner, with departures from Terminal 2 at 7:30am and 9:30am and Terminal 1 half an hour later, at 42,000 won one way for adults. File your e-Arrival Card before you fly so you are not the one holding up the 8am bus.

    What Locals Know

The X6+ pass tells you who runs together. This season Korea’s multi resort season pass grew from five resorts to six, adding Alpensia to Yongpyong, High1, Jisan, Welli Hilli and Elysian Gangchon. Korean press reported an adult price of 599,000 won in its first sale round in September. It is overkill for a visitor, but it explains why Korean skiers hop between these six and why their weekend car parks fill together.

Helmets are becoming the rule. Korean ski news in early 2026 reported resorts such as Elysian Gangchon making helmets compulsory and stocking extra rental helmets. Even where it is optional, wear one; beginner slopes are where the collisions happen.

Weekdays are a different country. Korean office workers ski weekends and Christmas week, and night skiing after work at the Gyeonggi resorts. Go Tuesday to Thursday in early December and the lift lines and lesson groups shrink.

The magic word is 초보. Lesson menus and slope maps sort everything by level, and beginner terrain is labelled 초급 (chogeup). Look for it on the map before you follow a friend up a lift.

    Pick Your Version

    If It’s Your First Time

Book the 8:45am shuttle, not the 5:25am one. It gets you there for the 2pm group lesson on an afternoon half day ticket, and you are back on the 5pm bus. If I were you, I’d treat day one as a taster and only commit to a full day once you know you like it.

    If You’re Bringing Kids

Children 13 and under pay reduced rates for lifts, rentals and the shuttle. The lesson page takes children into English or Chinese group lessons from age 8, and 6 and 7 year olds into one to one private lessons only (300,000 won per team last season). I’d book the private lesson for small kids and plan plenty of hot chocolate breaks. Read Seoul with kids in winter for the rest of your trip.

    If You’re Travelling Solo

The shuttle and the group lesson do the social part for you: a group lesson needs at least four people, so you will not be on your own. I’d book a weekday and head back to the city for dinner. Our solo in Seoul guide has ideas for the evening.

    Sunbae’s Picks

My pick for a first timer who wants a proper day is Yongpyong. English lessons, a shuttle from the tourist areas and clear prices beat everything else on this list for someone who has never skied.

If I only had one afternoon, I’d take the 68,000 won half day ticket from 1pm with the 2pm group lesson. Most first timers are done after four hours anyway, and it fits the 5pm bus home.

If I wanted it cheap and close, I’d ride the Gyeongchun Line (teal green) to Elysian Gangchon on a weekday afternoon and be home for a late dinner.

I’d skip night skiing on your first day. Yongpyong’s evening session runs 7pm to 11pm, but you will be too tired, and the last Seoul shuttle leaves at 5pm.

    Offers Worth Knowing

Children 13 and under get lower prices on lifts, rentals and the shuttle. The half day ticket saves 28,000 won on the full day price for an adult. Renting the suit saves packing a whole ski outfit. And watch opening weekends: Hankyung reported that High1 discounted lift tickets and rentals for its opening weekend last season. Check each resort’s site for 2026 offers.

    What’s Changing In 2026

Foreign skiers are coming in bigger numbers. High1 counted about 43,000 foreign visitors in the 2025/26 winter, up 54 percent on the season before, according to the Kangwon Ilbo (in Korean), and it opened a one stop lounge just for foreign guests. Long haul arrivals are up too: Yanolja Research shows the Americas up 45.8 percent and Oceania up 44.5 percent on 2019. My read: expect more English signage and more tour packages, and book December weekend lessons early.

If you add the train, KTX and SRT merged on 1 September 2026 (in Korean), and bookings now run through the Korail+ app.

    What To Wear And Bring

Rent the suit, but bring your own gloves, a warm hat or neck warmer, thermal layers and sunglasses or goggles. Mountain wind in Gangwon feels much colder than Seoul. Our what to wear guide covers layers. After the slopes, a hot soak at a jjimjilbang back in Seoul is the local way to recover, and a winter street food stop on the walk home does the rest.

[SUNBAE FIELD TEST: time the 8:45am Myeongdong shuttle to Yongpyong on a weekday in December and note the real arrival time and the rental queue at Dragon Plaza]

    Word Of The Stop

초보 (chobo): beginner. You will see it on lesson menus, and 초급 (chogeup) marks beginner slopes. Say “chobo imnida” (I am a beginner) at the rental counter and the lesson desk so they know where to start you.

    How I Checked This

On 5 October 2026 I re-checked Yongpyong’s lift, rental, lesson and shuttle prices, stops, exits and season dates on its English site and its shuttle partner’s English and Korean pages, High1’s valley course on its own site, last season’s opening days in VisitKorea and Korean news, and read Korean news and skier blogs for the X6+ pass, helmet rules and train access. Still unconfirmed: every resort’s 2026/27 opening day and prices, the Elysian Gangchon shuttle and ITX stops for this season, and the approximate distances for Konjiam and Vivaldi Park.
