Seoul is one of the easiest cities on earth to travel alone: Tripadvisor ranked it the world’s top solo travel destination in its 2025 Travellers’ Choice awards. The subway is simple, eating alone is normal, Seoul’s walking tours are free, and the last fortnight of October stacks up free festivals. A solo autumn week here costs far less than you expect.
Sunbae Says: Save 112 (police), 119 (fire and ambulance) and 1330 (the Korea Travel Hotline, in English) before you land. You will probably never need them, and that is exactly when you want them saved.
Picture your first evening: bag dropped at a Hongdae hostel, jacket on, wondering whether it is weird to walk into a restaurant alone. It is not. In Seoul a table for one is the most ordinary thing in the world.
Is Seoul Safe For Solo Travellers?
In my 24 years here, Seoul has felt like one of the calmest big cities I know, late at night included. Visit Seoul’s safety page (in Korean) says most of the city is safe day and night, including for women travelling alone, and its advice is the boring, correct kind: skip dark alleys and car parks, pay only the metered taxi fare, and check prices before you order from a stall.
Tourist police patrol Myeong-dong, Itaewon and Dongdaemun and can translate and settle disputes.
Normal big city sense still applies. Watch your drink in Hongdae and Itaewon clubs, use licensed taxis or a ride app, and avoid very dense crowds. That last point matters on 31 Oct, and my Halloween in Seoul guide covers crowd safety properly.
Navigation is the one thing that trips solo visitors up. Google Maps cannot give you walking directions in Korea, so install the apps in my Korea travel apps guide before you fly.
Where To Sleep: Pick Your Base
Your bed will be your biggest cost. Here is how the main solo bases compare, with dorm prices from a Hostelworld snapshot taken on 5 Oct 2026 (they move daily).
| Area | Best For | Dorm From | Getting Around | My Take |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hongdae | Social travellers, nightlife, first timers | About US$17 to US$22 | Line 2 (green), AREX (blue) straight from Incheon | My pick. Young, cheap, airport train to the door |
| Myeong-dong | Shoppers, short stays | About US$22 to US$27 | Line 4 (sky blue), Line 2 nearby | Central but pricier, quiet after 10pm |
| Jongno | Palaces, markets, history | About US$22 to US$30 | Lines 1 (dark blue), 3 (orange) and 5 (purple) | Best for early palace mornings |
| Itaewon | International food, bars | About US$29 | Line 6 (brown) | Fun, but hilly and loud on weekends |
I’d base myself in Hongdae for a first solo trip. Hongik University Station sits on Line 2 (green) and the Airport Railroad (blue) (AREX, blue), so you ride in from Incheon without changing trains. Book a hostel with a common room if you want company, and a capsule or private room if you want sleep.
[AFFILIATE: Hostelworld hostels in Hongdae]
Heads Up: Since 4 Aug 2026, guesthouses and hanok stays that hide their room rates or charge more than the posted price face a five day suspension on the first offence, The Korea Times reports. Screenshot your booking price, and if a host asks for more at check in, call 1330.
Getting Around Cheaply
The subway is your best friend. The adult base fare is 1,550 won with a transit card. Buy a T-money card at any convenience store, or, if you will ride three or more times a day, a short Climate Card tourist pass. The 30 day tourist card stopped working on 1 Oct, but the 1 to 7 day passes continue; my guide to which transit card tourists need now shows which machines sell them.
Eating Alone: Honbap Is Normal
Koreans have a word for eating alone, honbap, and nobody blinks at it. Noodle shops, gukbap (rice soup) places, kimbap chains, convenience stores and market stalls all welcome one diner.
The one catch is Korean barbecue. Many barbecue restaurants want at least two portions per table, so a solo diner either pays for two or gets politely turned away at the dinner rush.
Worth It: Gwangjang Market for dinner alone. You sit at a stall counter, point at what looks good and nobody bats an eye. The food alley runs roughly 9am to 11pm every day, though each stall keeps its own hours. Take Jongno 5-ga Station (Line 1, dark blue), Exit 7 or 8, and the market entrance is right there; Euljiro 4-ga Station (Line 2 green, Line 5 purple) Exit 4 also works. My winter street food guide has what to order.
Heads Up: Gwangjang has a history of overcharging tourists, from a 2,000 won cup of water to sausage plates that grew in price at the counter. From 1 Sep 2026, food businesses that fail to show prices or charge more than the posted price get a five day suspension on the first offence, The Korea Economic Daily reports (in Korean). Your move: order only from stalls with prices on the board, and confirm the total before you eat.
Skip It: Queuing an hour alone for a viral barbecue spot, only to hear “two portions minimum”. Save barbecue for when you have met people, or use the trick below.
How To Meet People
Free walking tours. The Seoul Tourism Organization runs free tours with volunteer guides through Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Bukchon, Seochon, the Naksan city wall and more, plus a K-pop route and night courses. Book on the Seoul walking tour booking site: individual bookings for next month open on the 15th, so November dates are bookable from 15 Oct. A tour needs at least two people, and if fewer than two have booked by 5pm two days before, it is cancelled automatically. Palace tours take up to 20 people, other routes 10, so the good slots fill.
Palace tours. Gyeongbokgung costs 3,000 won (free in full hanbok) and runs free English tours at 11:00, 13:30 and 15:30, no booking needed, according to Visit Seoul. It is open 9am to 6pm in October and 9am to 5pm from November, last entry an hour before closing, and closed on Tuesdays. Take Gyeongbokgung Station (Line 3, orange), Exit 5, about 490 m.
Hostel nights and the spa. Common room nights are easy. For an evening that feels social without talking, sweat it out with half of Seoul in a Korean spa; my jjimjilbang guide explains the rules.
Free And Cheap Late October Events
This guide goes live on 21 Oct, right in your sweet spot. My Seoul in late October guide explains why the second half of the month is the best.
| Event | Dates | Cost | Getting There |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seoul Silver Grass Festival, Haneul Park | to 23 Oct, 10am to 9pm | Free | World Cup Stadium Station (Line 6, brown), then about 40 min on foot |
| Seoul BBQ Festival, Nanji Camping Ground | 24 to 25 Oct | Grill table 10,000 won (gas) or 20,000 won (charcoal), meat extra | Shuttle from Digital Media City Station (Line 6) Exit 2, 1,500 won |
| Jeongdong Night Walk | 29 to 31 Oct | Free | City Hall Station (Line 1 dark blue, Line 2 green), Exit 2 |
| Seoul Wellness Travel Week | 29 Oct to 4 Nov | Varies | Bongeunsa and Gangnam |
| Han River Drone Light Show | Sat 31 Oct, 7:30pm to 9:15pm | Free | Jayang Station (Line 7, olive), Exit 1 |
The city’s festival notice (in Korean) puts Haneul Park about 40 minutes’ walk from the station; my Haneul Park guide has the stairs and electric car. The Seoul BBQ Festival (in Korean) sold tables in two Naver rounds (16 Sep and 6 Oct) but keeps some walk in seats. The Jeongdong Night Walk (in Korean) previews on 29 Oct and opens properly on Friday 30 Oct with a palace concert at Deoksugung. The drone show can be delayed or cancelled for weather. For everything else, check the what’s on calendar.
What Locals Know
There is a Korean fix for solo barbecue. Search 혼고기 (hon-gogi, “solo meat”) or 1인 고기 on Naver Map. Korean bloggers who eat alone keep lists of grill places that take single portions, and a few chains now give each diner a personal grill, including branches in Yeonnam-dong near Hongdae and in Myeong-dong. Your English search will never find these.
Lunch is the solo diner’s best hour. Office workers eat alone at noon all over Jongno and Gwanghwamun, so the 11:30am to 1pm window is when single seat counters and set menus (baekban, rice with side dishes) are everywhere. Dinner is when groups take over.
Seoul is selling itself to people like you. In August, the city won “Favorite Worldwide City” for a fifth straight year in the US Trazee Travel awards, aimed at 25 to 40 year old travellers, and Korean coverage singled out solo friendly experiences: Gwangjang Market food, Dongmyo vintage, Hongdae music alleys and city hikes, Money Today reports (in Korean). Expect plenty of other solo travellers on the trails and in the markets.
Hiking is the new social club. Foreign visitor numbers at Achasan rose 11.8% last year, the same coverage notes. A Saturday morning ridge walk is full of friendly locals.

Pick Your Version
If It’s Your First Time
Stay in Hongdae, book one walking tour for your first morning, and let the guide orient you. I’d do Gyeongbokgung on day two with the free 11:00 English tour, never on a Tuesday. My Start Here hub covers the pre flight admin, and the unwritten rules of Korea will stop you making the classic mistakes.
If You’re Travelling Solo
Mix one social thing a day with one solo thing. I’d book a walking tour in the morning and eat at a Gwangjang counter at night, or pair the Jeongdong Night Walk with a hostel common room evening. You never feel lonely and you never feel herded.
If You’re Here For A Reset
Plan around Seoul Wellness Travel Week from 29 Oct. I’d build a slow day of temple calm at Bongeunsa, a jjimjilbang evening and an early night. My Seoul Wellness Travel Week 2026 guide has what is confirmed so far.
Sunbae’s Picks
My pick for your first night: Gwangjang Market at a stall counter with prices on the board. One plate, one drink, and you will have learned how Seoul eats in 20 minutes.
If I only had one free evening, I’d take the Jeongdong Night Walk on Friday 30 Oct. It is free, flat, lantern lit, and easy to wander alone.
I’d skip the paid palace tour packages and take the free English tour at Gyeongbokgung instead. Same palace, same stories, no fee beyond the 3,000 won entry.
My big night out: the drone show on Saturday 31 Oct. Free, by the river, and a calmer way to spend Halloween than the party strips. Be at Ttukseom by 7pm.
[SUNBAE STORY: an evening exploring Seoul alone in autumn that shows a first timer how easy and safe it feels]
Offers Worth Knowing
Walking tours, the Silver Grass Festival, the Jeongdong Night Walk and the drone show are all free, and Gyeongbokgung is free in full hanbok.

What’s Changing In 2026
More company is coming. Korea welcomed 10.71 million foreign visitors in the first half of 2026, and the government is aiming for 22 to 23 million this year, according to The Korea Times. My read: hostel common rooms and walking tours will be full of English speakers this autumn, so book tours as soon as they open.
Overcharging finally has teeth. The new one strike suspensions for restaurants (from 1 Sep) and small lodgings (from 4 Aug) are aimed squarely at the places solo travellers use most. Posted prices are now enforceable, so point at the board and stand your ground politely.
A Simple Solo Day Budget
A 3,000 won palace ticket, a free walking tour, four subway rides at 1,550 won, and a Gwangjang dinner with a drink comes to roughly 30,000 won before your bed.
Before You Fly
Foreign visitors must file the Korea e-Arrival Card within the three days before arrival; my e-Arrival Card guide walks you through it. Get an eSIM so your map works from the airport train.

Word Of The Stop
혼밥 (honbap), “eating alone”. Hon (alone) plus bap (rice, meaning a meal). Ask “혼밥 가능해요? (honbap ganeunghaeyo?)” to check a restaurant takes solo diners. In practice, hold up one finger at the door and say “한 명이요 (han myeong-iyo)”, “one person”.

How I Checked This
On 5 Oct 2026 I rechecked the walking tour rules on the Seoul walking tour booking site, palace hours on Visit Seoul, event dates on Seoul Metropolitan Government notices, the festival portal and the drone show site, and the overcharging rules in The Korea Economic Daily and The Korea Times. Korean blogs and Naver searches supplied the solo barbecue and market hour tips. Hostel prices were a 5 Oct snapshot, and individual stall hours at Gwangjang vary, so check on the day.
